Jamestown General Petya Evgeni announced in a press statement that the First Republican Field Army, Airforce Army, First Ballistics Army, and Naval Army will conduct a joint wargames exercise on June 1st. The games will be conducted, according to General Evgeni, in conjunction with Eranshahir military forces. The office stated that the wargame will take place in the Gulf of Iason and along the Ophioneus-Dirkhizistan boarder. It is expected that Eranshahir will do likewise. To conduct the games, several additional divisions will be brought to full readiness to prepare for the game and rehearse for future military action. The General stated that the games are to ensure “the utmost preparation of our forces to defend our nation.” The games will rehearse a variety of incidents over a two week period, ranging from terror situations, missile defense and ‘conventional warfare practices.’ The preparation for the games, the General stated, will also test the ability of the Federation to rapidly mobilize units in the region. Before the wargames start, the Rapid Response Divisions, the 24th and 25th Divisions, will be deployed before the rest of the units to test their deployment skills. Many see this emphasis on a reflection to Sunrisia’s Rapid Response force, which was just created.

The wargames, in the eyes of many political punits, is a direct response to Dirkhizistan’s recent wargames in the Sea of Iason. Anonymous statements from members of the State Department state that these wargames are a response to the cold shoulder the administration has received from Dirkhizistan. While other nations in the region have expressed interest in joining Ophioneus’s coalition Dirkhizistan has continued negotiations with the Bohin while not expressing interest in meeting the Federation. Journal Pundit Leon Trava argued that “the administration cannot be seen as being ignored. While Dirkhizistan flexes its muscle in the Sea of Iason, the Federation must show that not only is it the largest military force in the region, but it has friends that surround Dirkhizistan. Either Dirkhizistan meets with the Federation or it risks being alienated in the region.” The Federation’s focus south comes at a time when it has been given another cold shoulder by the Reich and Rezua. “Simply, Ophioneus is seeking dependable allies and stability in the region. That is what Io promised in his coup.” After the crisis in Konetya, the administration needs to show that it can resolve diplomatic crisis’s without approaching a war. Mr. Trava was quick to point out that Dirkhizistan’s rhetoric on western nations are eerily similar. However, Ophioneus has had a trend of siding with western powers on world issues.

It remains to be seen what Ophioneu’s proposal actually is. While several officials in the State Department stated that the organization would not be a military alliance, it is clear that Ophioneus must provide military commitments to the region. The administration appears to seek more trade for all nations: a transcontinental road, railroad, and standardize custom rules. Given the recent affairs in the Ventismarian Union, an organization in Ophion/middle east area may oppose navigational taxes being imposed by the VU. Given the tedious state of the region, it remains to be seen if Ophioneus can bridge the political gaps in the region anyhow and build a coalition to provide relative peace in the region.

Jamestown Secretary Matvey Sergey, leading Ophioneus’s effort to reform its economy, addressed reporters this afternoon. The Department of Trade and Commerce, under Sergey’s command, has pursued free and fair-trade policies. Tasked with completing most of the reforms passed by the National Assembly and Continental Congress, the Department has been trying to keep pace with the break neck pace of reforms.
In a rare occurrence, the Secretary took the time to address the passage of the “Straits and Sea Passage Act” by the Ventismarian Union (VU). The Secretary stated that Ophioneus will object to the act, arguing that these measures “harm free and fair trade and pose a major hindrance to the lifeline of global trade.” When asked if the Federation will retaliate, the Secretary replied that the Federation will not place any fees for using its water. “The Federation is a supporter of fair trade and will call for free usage of the seas,” the Secretary added. The questions remain whatever or not Federation military vessels and civilian craft will pay the fees requested by the VU. No indication was given by the Secretary that a policy was being created to address the measure. The measure by the VU is expected to draw retaliatory measures from nations around the world.
The Federation secured a major trade deal with the Union, a major win for the Io administration. The deal pushes forward the administration’s goal of breaking down trade barriers, employment barriers, and creating visa free travel. The administration has made tourism, ease of employment and growth key tenants of foreign and domestic policy. However, these duties put the administration’s push for fair trade at risk. Several policy experts expect the Federation to seek a waiver from the toll and may seek to amend the trade agreement with the VU to protest the action. If these efforts fail, Io’s plan to jump start the economy of the Federation may fail. Protectionism overseas could result in fewer investment in the Federation, which needs cash to jump start private enterprises.
The Secretary took additional time to address more economic programs the Federation is taking. Specifically, the Secretary took the most time to address the effort of the administration to scatter government offices throughout the country. Currently, most department headquarters are located in Jamestown. Io has stated that most government departments will be placed in different cities around the country. The move will help spur growth in regional cities and potentially lower soaring rents in the capital city of Jamestown. Each of these new headquarters is said to house new banks of computers and servers, roughly 200 million NSD worth per department. The goal is to ease administrative tasks and promote new research to raise the nation’s technological competitiveness in the world.
