Themiclesia wrote:In Themiclesia, the situation in ancient China is also seen for most of her history. All the people of Themiclesia, regardless of state of residence and ethnicity, are divided into 24 races, who are, akin to the analogous system of surnames in China, in theory begotten by one common female ancestor. This system is extremely ancient and probably outdates the concept of Themiclesia after all. These 24 races represent the 24 founding families of Themiclesia and their matriarchs; the period of these 24 families must have been somewhere during the middle neolithic period (about 8000 years before present), because a definite shift to patriarchy has been observed by the late neolithic and chalcolithic periods. As perhaps an anomaly in the region, Themiclesia retains her archaic traditions with inordinate fidelity even to the present day; neolithic funerary practises are in significant ways still maintained in modern funerals. Those descended from a family always took the family's name as the ὄνομα ἔθνους as the final element of their names; eventually, these families grew so large, and their members so diverse, that most family members never even knew each other. These families also originally held political sway in Themiclesia, but as they expanded, political power devolved from the family compact into the states, which originally were founded as "colonies" of these great families. By about the 3rd Millennium B.C., the "family" element of these 24 families has disappeared, and became simply another patronymic alongside the more intimate ὄνομα δῆς "family name" of one's personal, close family. This "personal" family is the product of branching of the 24 ancient "great families". Since about the 16th Century B.C., we see the name ἔθνος (translated into English as "race") being applied to the ancient great families. By then, Themiclesia had long entered the literate period, and extensive records were kept to register the origins of each personal family. In fact, before modern nationality laws were enacted, he who is part of one of these 24 races was automatically considered a national of Themiclesia (as Themiclesia is by definition composed of the descendants of these 24 families), and those ouside are permanently aliens. On another front, Themiclesia, as a conglomerate of families, does not have a clear territorial border, and does not resemble the sovereign state according to modern definition. To this day, intermarriage between members of one race remains prohibited for fear of incest, but also for fear of political instability. Since this system was already quite solid during the patriarchic phase of the neolithic history, and Themiclesia had gerontoratic elements during that era, marriage within a race meant that one could "skip" above one's generational rank, and pose threat to the elders of the family. This was detrimental to the political system, when the states were still firmly in control under the family elders. The geroncrat of the family Amphida later emerged to be the chief priest of the god of heaven in our history, resulting in his eventual recognition as the king, literally meaning "leading priest" in our native language.
Towards modernity, as foreign eugenicists started appearing on the horizon in Themiclesia, the traditional concept of eugenics came increasingly under threat; people began marrying within their own races, to the horror of the older generation, even when medical doctors certified that this will not cause defects in the child; at this point, this traditional law had already been proven to have little grounds in eugenics, and totally exposed as a political issue, cf. the theory of the monogenesis of humans saying that all humans share one common ancestor, so any marriage will result in incest etc.; this theory was not known in ancient Themiclesia, and the potential ancestral relationship of those 24 great families were ignored at the time of the formulation of this law. Its implication was so great that even today most parents will forbid their children from seeking spouse from within the race, if only to avoid the social stigma.
In the 1930s, when the theories of eugenics reached its zenith in popularity in Europe, prominent traditionalists in Themiclesia began speaking out against European eugenics on religious grounds: they accused the eugenicists of "attempting to deduce the wisdom of god" because they tried to "predict the nature of the foetus before birth" and of "transgressing the divine will" because they promoted abortions on various grounds. Abortion, aside from ones conducted due to medical reasons, was one of the worst crimes possible, and it was punishable by permanent exile of the whole family; this is because it is seen as divine command that a child should result from a foetus, and aborting it was a direct attack on the divine will. It is worse than regicide. This religious overtone to society helped prevent the more novel ideas of artificial alteration of natural marriage and pregnancy and the ridiculous idea of a "master race" from permeating into Themiclesia, making her one of the least racist countries to foreigners even though it was actually racist by its own definitions.
