Political Subdivisions in your Nation

Postby Arnevia » Wed Sep 17, 2014 5:32 pm

Do your nations have any political subdivisions (provinces, territories, states, regions, themas, etc.?) If so, do they have any policy-making power, or is your state unitary; exclusively run by the central government?

Are there any regions that are considered special or important in your nation for some reason?

Any regions with above/below average populations?

I shall begin: Arnevia is a unitary state, but it is split into five districts (excluding the Capital Region) called the Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, and Central Districts. These districts exist only for administrative purposes; the central government holds all the power.

Nearly all citizens note which district they belong to, and tend to brag about theirs, while coming up with many hundreds of good-natured stereotypes about other districts. Especially Central District, because it's boring as hell. Intradistrict sports teams exist.

The Southern District is by far the most populated, containing 43% of the nation's population, (106 million people)many of whom live in the hyper-dense Archon River Valley. The Western District is next with 22% (54 million people.)

We do not have any official subdivisions other than a dependent atoll that has no land but employees with citizenship that work at a resort on stilts so thus we are unitary. During elections individual islands are given electoral votes based on population however candidates run from at large so there are not necessarily electoral districts on every island. The resort employees votes are counted to whichever island they last lived on.

The sectors are the largest sub-divisions of the Imperium, governed by Archons. Each Archon represents his/her sector in the General Assembly, and also the interests of his/her clan within that sector.

Same is true for system and planetary governors.

Special treatment is given to worlds under military administration, and to worlds within the personal domain of the monarch. Worlds administered by a military official are exempt from civil law and subject to military jurisdiction instead - usually it involves considerably tougher legal standards and an economy strictly submitted to military needs. While a somewhat unpopular place for Sidhae to settle on for obvious reasons, these worlds still are represented in the General Assembly by the respective theater commander in charge of their governance.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

Lancov Proper is a unitary state, though it is divided into Counties and Municipalities that have limited lawmaking authority granted them by the Assembly. Ramonosd Capitol District is treated like a Municipality without a County. There are also two Overseas Territories that have devolved legislatures but do not elect any voting members of the Assembly. It is a somewhat unfair system that is being negotiated. There is also one Protectorate, the Lancovian Isles. It is sovereign territory of the Lancovian Orthodox Church, but its foreign affairs and defense are the responsibility of Lancov in exchange for the right to station a naval base on one of the islands.

Are there any regions that are considered special or important in your nation for some reason?
Ramonosd Capital District is important because it's the capital. Bittere is special because of their general attitude of wanting Lancovian military protection, but not wanting to give anything in return.

Any regions with above/below average populations?
Dukesland County Is more populous than the next two most populous Counties combined. Lancovian Isles is very sparsely populated other than the naval base and a few monasteries. The rest is mostly used for biological and botanical research, since it is relatively unspoiled by humanity.

The Kingdom is Divided into 22 Duchies headed by Dukes or Duchesses who are members of the Royal Family and serve as leaders for life. Each Duchy has a Ducal Council which are made up of civilians whom have been elected to act as legislatures. Below that you have districts which are ruled by democratically elected District Viscount/Viscountess who acts with a District Council. Municipalities are given the freedom to choose how they may govern themselves so long as it is democratic. The thee most common ways are the Single Official Method in which an elected official rules on his own for a specific time, the Councilship Nethod in which only a democratically elected council exist as municipal leadership, and the most common system the Mixed Municipal System in which an elected executive and a democratically elected legislature work together as leadership of a municipality.

Hmm... Very nice system, although I'm not that sure about disbanding Counts/Countesses, and most importantly electing Viscounts/Viscountesses... First should be instated in rural & city sub-districts and second should be civilian titles, not nobility...

We have 5 provinces: Baskent, Dogu, Bati, Guney, Kuzey. We have a central government but each province also has a legislature, but they aren't as powerful.

Are there any regions that are considered special or important in your nation for some reason?

This is a vague question. Well, Baskent is special because it is the province which holds the capital.

Any regions with above/below average populations?

Baskent is the smallest but the province with the most crowded population (approx. 18 million) mainly because it has one of the oldest settlements and our capital/largest/oldest city, Jefferton. Guney is the second smallest and second most crowded (approx. 14 million) province. Dogu is the third largest province and the third most crowded (approx. 13 million). Kuzey is the largest province and fourth most crowded (approx. 10 million). Bati is the second largest and least crowded province (approx. 1 million).

There are various types of states within the Empire, each with their own tier of power and autonomy; at the top are the Kingdoms, the largest of the states with there being four such states (Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, and Württemberg), second are the Grand Duchies, of which there are six of which. Third are the Duchies, of which there are five in total; fourth are the Principalities, which are the most numerous of the state type with seven in all; following that in fifth place are the three Hanseatic Cities, which are essentially city-states located along the northern coast and are also notable for being the only truly democratic states in the entirety of the Empire. And finally, there is Alsace-Lorraine, which is an Imperial Territory, meaning that it is directly administered by the Imperial government in Berlin; as such, it has the least amount of power and autonomy out of all the Imperial states.

The Auzkhian Empire is comprised of many States.
Each State has autonomy and can set local policy. The following: Bavaria, Prussia, Anhalt, Saxony, Thüringen, Hesse-Nassau, Mecklenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Hannover, Brunswick, Oldenburg, Saarland, Rheinland-Westphalia, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, Württemberg, Baden, Serbia, Montenegro, Malta, Corsica Sardinia, Parma, Modena, Tuscany, Rome, and the Two Sicilies have their monarch and can be anything like a King, Prince, Duke, or Grand Duke. However, Vienna, Upper and Lower Auzkhia, Styria, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tirol, Littoral, Carniolia, Vorarlberg, Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia, Czech Silesia, Galicia, Bukovina, Dalmatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Lombardy-Venetia and Alsace-Lorraine are personal lands of the Habsburg Emperor.
But, not all states are monarchies; San Marino and the three Hanseatic Cities of Hamburg, Bremen, and Lübeck are democratic republics. San Marino, the smallest state in the empire, was allowed to keep its old, 262 year old constitution when it joined in 1862.
All the states have divisions and most of them are unitary. The state subdivisions can vary, the city states have wards but the states are divided into the provinces and/or districts. The Kingdom of Hungary is divided into 67 Counties.

Do your nations have any political subdivisions (provinces, territories, states, regions, themas, etc.?) If so, do they have any policy-making power, or is your state unitary; exclusively run by the central government?

Kingdoms and States represented in the Council of State are dual monarchy, consisting of two member states, Empire of Alexandreon and Kingdom of Zamoi.

Empire of Alexandreon consists of: Kingdoms of Dikastiro and Proapsizo, Grand Duchies of Nafitis and Stars, Principality of Ochuroma and several smaller political entities.

Kingdom of Dikastiro and both Grand Duchies have similar subdivision: the biggest units are Provinces, subdivided into Prefectures, divided into Municipalities and Rural Districts. Kingdom of Proapsizo retained its subdivision into Governorates, Departments and Communities. Principality of Ochuroma has the same subdivision structure as Kingdom of Zamoi.

Imperial Cities, either the most important centres or traditionally entitled to such status, are excluded of the ordinary territorial subdivision and are considered to be Departments.

Kingdom of Zamoi is divided into Margraviates, Bailiwicks, Municipalities and Estates (administrative entities subordinated to the local noble landowner).

Both Empire of Alexandreon and Kingdom of Zamoi retained full powers, with exception of foreign, military and common financial affairs transferred to the central government. Generally speaking, both member states of the Dual Monarchy are unitary (although de iure, Empire of Alexandreon is federal).

Apart from this basic structure, there are also specialized subdivisions such as division of the entire Dual Monarchy into Military Districts, Mining Districts and so on, and so forth.

Are there any regions that are considered special or important in your nation for some reason?

Entire territory of Kingdoms and States represented in the Council of State is considered to be equally important, yet proper administrative regions where both capital cities (Imperial Capital City of Anakalipsi and Royal Zamoian Capital City of Drakopolis) are slightly more important.

Do: Provinces. There are 13 Do. 12 Provinces and 1 Autonomous Province. Joseon Peninsula, Hanwon, Baeksul, Goguryeo, Gyungmi, Taekgi, Manju, Sandong, Sun, West Mongolia, Central Mongolia, East Mongolia, and the Autonomous Meiji Province of Japan
With the exception of the Joseon Peninsula and Japan, all of the provinces have equal policy making power in that all powers not held by the Empire is delegated to its Provinces. They can create laws within the province as well as direct commerce and create educational policies in line with very loose guidelines the Empire has set.

The Joseon Peninsula is considered Imperial territory and is governed by the Emperor.

Japan is governed by a Minister who acts as a pseudo-Head of Government for the Autonomous Province and can create any laws, even those that contradict Imperial Law so long as they follow the Charter of Autonomy and the Empire's Constitution.

CAZ: Colonial Administrative Zone. They're large blocs of District Areas designated as one cohesive unit. District Areas are colonies in which the local residents who aren't from the Empire proper are subjugated as laborers and second class citizens. A military General or enforcer known as a High Chancellor manages these districts. A Chancellor manages each individual District. They are as follows:
Southeastern CAZ: Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Islandic CAZ: Taiwan, Malaysia, African CAZ: Madagascar, New Lands CAZ: Peruvia, Yemen-Oman CAZ: Yemen and Oman

Are there any regions that are considered special or important in your nation for some reason?
The Capital Cities of each Province is governed directly by a Byeon, a special designation in which the city is independent from the province in a few finer details. This was done because when designating the capital cities after World War 1, the largest and most important city was chosen.

Hanyang is a Special City, designated to be directly controlled by the Imperial government as opposed to a representative from the Imperial government as other cities or counties in the Joseon Peninsula.

Any regions with above/below average populations?
Baeksul-Do, Taekgi-Do, and the Gyungmi Peninsula have disproportionately low amount of people compared to size of the area. This is due to the extreme cold as well as most of it has been changed to farmlands, research facilities, and industrial operations.

Sandong has the highest population to area capacity with over 200 million people living in that province. This is due to a great amount of technological development that happened due to Chinese-Joseon relations as well as a very easy sea route to Hanyang through the Yellow Sea.

The state of affairs in Auzkhia represents the situation in Themiclesia remarkably well. The only unity in Themiclesia is in the person of the king, who commands the loyalty of all the lords of Themiclesia, who are otherwise sovereign. Currently, there are 521 independent lords in Themiclesia, with the most senior one being the king. Aside from the king, each of these lords rule a state.

However, all states are different. Some states are more democratic than others, and some more are even federal in and of themselves. In all cases, a person usually identifies with a state, and not with Themiclesia. The presence of the king in ordinary people's daily lives is zero, except in the king's own state, where he is lord.
