In Purpelia private firearms ownership is as you know illegal in most cases. However mele weapons of any kind are allowed and relatively loosely regulated. So anyone can carry a sword, axe or hell a halberd out in the street for the purpose of self defense and legally use it.

So in that context how do you imagine the development of mele weapons would proceed? What kind of things would the average Purpelian citizen hope to find in his local self defense store?
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Well, what time period are we starting from and what is currently the mainstay self defense tool? 1700s and axes? 1650s and sabres?

Well I imagine that the starting point would be when ever the first caveman picked up the first rock. But really I think that the great divergence would be when ever swords and other melee weapons cased being mainstream implements of war. Up until that point I can see civilian and military weapon designs going hand in hand. So something like the late 19th and early 20th century really. I have no idea what was used for self defense than however. And the ultimate goal would be present day.

I feel kind of bad, because I don't understand a squick of this sword stuff. I really need to learn something other than firearms.

Swords are just sharpened metal rods like guns are just tubes that spit lead. That's all anyone needs to know.

Not really. Purpelia is an absolute feudal monarchy but the monarchy strives to impose socialism in order to keep the people content and happy. So you would not see anyone being super poor or super rich. Well aside from the nobles. Also, crime is relatively low altogether as the social security net ensures no one needs to steal in order to stay alive. And both prostitution and drugs are completely legal and a state run monopoly so there is no crime to be had there either.

Rule 1) "Sword X vs Sword Y" is dumb and pointless debate if those two swords are meant for different fighting styles.

In the land of the iron eagle, a man of good standing may clash swords with another should the concepts of diplomacy prove a failure. Usually, iron-cored bronze blades of a considerable tend to be brought out, as they were one of the many tools that helped fight off and keep the magyar menace away from europe. Obviously, fully-iron and steel blades took course and prevalence over the centuries, but never-the-less, if a pattern of weapon has secured itself into the hearts and minds of a cultures' warrior ethos, then undoubtedly such things will bear prevalence upon civil culture. Why even bother using a rapier anyway?

You mean the sport of nobles? As-in, fencing, done by people who never saw the battlefield, and lived in extravagance, wherein creating such fanciful blade concepts purely as a way of showing off their economic and cultural arrogance? Thank you, but no.
