the options as i see it are one of the following three
1. standardize the M249 SPW (or the Mk48) to lower the weight as much as possible and improve performance in built up area's
2. Adopt the proposed 7.62 variant of the LSAT prototype
3. Replace or upgrade the M16/M4 to accept the new LSAT telescoped or caseless ammunition.

Also the M249 and FN mag are not related to the MG42, roller locked blowback and long stroke gas are very diferent.

As I understand it, US soldiers who were issued M1 Carbines had some complaints about the stopping power behind .30 Carbine, to the point where some people issued standing orders to aim for the head.

So less official training more multiple carbine wielding infantry wined about it not being either A: 30-06 or B: automatic like the M1A1(the US army really needs to get this #1 thing under control) So their officers simply told them to aim for the head. and given the situation the weapon was likely to be used in it wasn't an out right terrible idea.
part of this is that the M1A3 carbine is probably the sexiest weapon used In WWII

No army needs automatic weaponry for every infantryman.

LMGs, GPMGs, etc work fine with everyone else getting some kind of semi-automatic rifles.

The "stopping power" issues with .30 Carbine were a result of cold weather and ammunition quality. .30 carbine is pretty damaging actually. It isn't the best round in the world, but its actually very capable, and a very potent man stopper.

However, Sevv is correct. Marines of the 1st Marine Division during Korea reported instances of .30 carbine failing to put down enemy soldiers, and some men were issued standing orders to aim for the head.

There is a story of Soviet crewmen shooting at each other with a Thompson SMG and the rounds not penetrating their heavy winter coats which were frozen/wet.

Huh. that's actually quite interesting. So what i'm reading from this is that not only did .30 carbine likely not have an issue penetrating the jackets as much as missing. My follow up question would be curiosity as to how common the M1 carbine was with marines

as for a lack of putting them down I've heard of this happening with nearly all rounds if i'm not mistaken the only thing I've never really heard being walked off from is a 12.7X99 or 12.7X108 to the abdomen.

Also I missed you Puz. how have you been? If you don't mind me firing a few TG's your way I have some questions

That's because a 12.7mm or higher round to the abdomen is immediately fatal or you're going to die shortly thereafter.

USMC squads changed a bit from the start of WW2 to the end.

M1 Carbines just found their way into the hands of Marines really.

If anything you'd find NCOs and such with them, while your rifle squad would be all M1 Garands, etc.

Regiments with "Guards" in their name are those who routinely guard important things, like British regiments guarding Buckingham Palace. They're usually the most elite infantry soldiers in the armed forces, like the Coldstream Guards or the Old Guard.
