So how come China didn't industrialise, it was and is literally floating on coal and other natural resources? It just "luck" the Chinese were divided across petty ethnic and nationalist lines that prevented them from achieving a unified empire like the British had?

It's fairly deliberate the British made a system that could function using rule of law rather than divine right rule of man. There's nothing "luck" related to that.

It doesn't matter if the physical air strip survives if the planes are all destroyed. Plus, the materials and equipment one normally uses to rapidly repair a damaged air base are plentiful on the Chinese mainland, but no so much on a tiny artificial air strip. And since it can't move, the enemy can use satellites to figure out where it is, and where the storage areas are, and take their sweet time planning an attack because they don't have to worry about losing the opportunity.

The benefit of a carrier is in its flexibility. But if you want something to kill your enemy's navy, that's what submarines are for.

The Japanese never really figured out how to properly use or properly stop enemy submarines. Which is a rather major flaw, because it means they lose access to oil when their merchant marine ends up swimming with the fishes.
