Interesting information about a British concept for a relatively light >40 tonne IFV with a very high level of protection courtesy special armor. Also addresses the question of what happens when you shoot Burlington armor with HESH.

Would it be reasonable to have protypes for very early PMT weapons in an MT setting,

There's no hard and fast line between them. Railguns are often considered PMT but obviously the early prototypes exist. But despite what popular culture would often have you believe, prototypes aren't usually fielded in combat Gundam-style.

Well, its not "lets send protoypes to the front lines" type of thing, its more if the area in which the protoypes are located is attacked, if said protoypes could be used to defend the facility.

That depends on the prototype in question. I don't think the US Navy Rail gun prototype is going to be all that useful, it is rather fixed in place. But a Tank test bed for new technology could probably be used in some ways.

Here's my next attempt at a good MBT.
Queen Models I, II and III, the latter two having been up-armored.

So far, as a stat block, they are all about 10m long, have a 7.62 coaxial gun, a 130mm cannon, a 20mm RWS (not sure if I have enough daka yet, so shush) There will be the usual 3 person crew, and the usual assortment of radios and whatnot.

If the British tested HESH and found it to be irrelevant but still used it as a primary round, that would be something...

Looks nice but I question wisdom of 10 road wheels. And the RWS is far too small.

Er, too many lol. Most tanks have 6-7.

Yes, it isn't physically big enough to house a 20mm. RWS are huge.

The turret is too long also.

What caliber do you suggest for a RWS?

They all suffer from being too lengthy.

20mm RWS is fine but it should be physically larger.

For ex. this is the OWS-25 (25mm but ok)

I think I'm going to keep the Defender and also field a UTV/sidebyside . A jeep would have been kind of too small for LSV/WMIK application and a bunch of other stuff (that would still be better done by something smaller and lighter than JLTV). Also, UTVs tend to be lighter than jeeps, and generally well suited for outdoor stuff and military use. For civvies you're better off buying e.g. a Suzuki Samurai, which does offer better on-roading and comfort but weight is a trade-off.

Well one could argue that by eliminating doors etc. bringing the samurai to open-top jeep condition you'd lose a lot of weight, but you'll also gain a lot b/c roll cage, etc. so you'd be kind of at square one. All listed specs for side-by-sides are for ready to use vehicles basically as most "military" and off-road equipment is already on there.

When you compare UTVs to purpose-built military jeeps like M151 or Mitsubishi whatever, UTV are at a definite advantage being lighter and featuring much smaller engines (so with increased fuel economy or range) with similar performance.

With that being said, I will not be using sport ATVs or quads for mainline general purpose stuff. These are best left to SOF, if at all.

I think I'll be going with a Yamaha Viking style rig that sits 3 across. The variant with back seats would offer "full" seating for 6 and leave the cargo bed open:

Image

..and it's only an inch over the 60" width mark iirc. so should probably fit nicely even in a not-NH90, with a mrzr-style collapsible rollcage

.

do you use mattracks at all?

You have the B-52s, a dedicated military cruise missile launching platform. You have parts supplies for them, you have crews trained to use them and maintain them, you have airbases designed to take them.

The 747 ALCM bus will be ludicrously expensive to operate up from B-52s.

actually thinking about it, its pretty smart:

China wants to control a vast area of ocean but lacks a navy capable of doing so, recognizing this, it's building airfields and strong points (which would likely be the base point for AShMs and similar) to augment its naval presence in the region. Compared to basing aircraft back on the mainland it seems like it would be a major improvement, not really a replacement for having aircraft carriers but still something.

What's to like about Cina

It's a dumb totalitarian ethnic-nationalism-empire held together by oppression and violence, it has an extremely aggressive foreign policy, it has produced basically no good military equipment ever and it all looks like it came out of a factory that used to make plastic toys. Anything old they made was copied from the Soviet Union or looks gay because they can't figure out how to build tracks and anything new just looks like it came out of a fucking anime. Their military history in the last two centuries has been the most inglorious of pretty much any country ever that isn't Pakistan.

But more importantly for the thread, they have made no good (military) innovations ever (that are relevant to us.)

There was an interesting conversation in NSG the other day where a China-fapper proclaimed that Chinese soldiers charging positions to engage in martial arts, and artillery troops firing shells without guns at LOS targets would overcome western imperial aggressors.

They invented lots of nifty stuff in the pre-communist past, but thats neither here nor there. Most of the equipment china has produced in area's that don't require advanced technology is competent (battle boxes, trucks, light tanks, small arms, rocket artillery etc)

I like china for a number of reasons not relevant to this thread, although I see all of its (many) problems-
its hyper aggressive foreign policy is like the best part
