At that point it would be more of a question of how effective the ammunition would be, not the gun. The gun just fires the munition.
In any event, with its original AP-T ammunition, the 120 mm M58 gun actually had greater muzzle energy than the M256 firing M829A3. Of course, it traveled at a whopping 1,067 m/s but it also weighed 23 kg. The lightened T123E6 variant of the M58 was actually the preferred weapon for the M60 until the 105 mm X15E8 (the British L7) was tested. T123E6 was more powerful, but the L7 had a much greater rate of fire since it didn't require two-piece and had APDS ammunition, so the US selected it instead.

I know a con is how expensive the program will be if you make every man at age 18 go into some form of basic military training. You generally only do this when your country is surrounded by enemies that could hit you at any moment (Israel) and you can justify it as a means of national defense.

How about being under a constant threat of warfare or physically forseeing military conflict within the very immediate future?

Low quality of troops
Fairly expensive
Your work force may suffer
The French noted a massive increase in how well the quality of troops increased when they moved from conscription to a volunteer military.

The shape of the turret leaves a lot to be desired. Also the cupola is WAY too far forwards.

The English Longbow (or should I say Welsh...) was a mass weapon in some periods as the English crown did attempt to force every able bodied man to try to train with the longbow. Im not sure that it was effective, but the image is at least lasting. The Kievan People wrote:The supply of bowmen was not something the state could really control at the time. The number of archers available for war depended on the number kicking around in the kingdom at the time or selling their services as mercenaries.
Nearly anyone could fire a crossbow with some training though, it was a real mass weapon.
