Everyone here is highly mature, or at least tries to be.

Rule number 1 of the NSMRC: If you think you can do something, you probably cant.

Q: What is the purpose of the thread?
A: The purpose of the thread is to provide informed feedback on in character military matters from a realistic perspective. If you have a military question this is the place for it.

Q: What is proper etiquette for raising questions or commenting?
A: First and foremost, we approach all issues from a realistic perspective. Even rations. Realistic does not mean hard MT. But it does mean verifiable. If you post a question and it is blatantly unrealistic, you will be informed. If you post a comment and it is blatantly unrealistic, you will be informed. Do not take this personally. If you cannot or will not accept something is unrealistic then this is not the correct thread for discussing it.

Second we encourage critical discussion. As long as the above is remembered you are free to rebut, critique and dissent to your hearts content. There is no official thread line and no formal hierarchy. Do not hesitate to speak your mind. But remember this street runs two ways: Just as you may critique others, others may critique you. If you are not comfortable seeing your idea critiqued think twice before you post it. Because it will probably happen.

Q: I'm new!
A: Great! If you are new to ns, new to MT or just feel you don't know much about military topics, you are definitely welcome to participate here. You might even learn something!

Just remember that when you begin exploring a new topic you will have some preconceived notions of what that topic is about. Many of those notions will be wrong and you will be forced to re-examine things you thought you knew. This is not a bad thing by any means but being told the awesome military factbook you wrote is not only not right, it's not even wrong can be understandably painful. But we, the thread, are here to help you. And we do in fact like discussing these topics and fielding questions.

Q: FanT? FT?
A: If you want to discuss something that is inherently unrealistic (FanT) or semi-realistic (Far FT) in a realistic way, that's cool. Just remember we emphasize the realism.

Looks legit. This can be implemented with friendly soldier wearing IFF gear and some sort of digital presentation device (HUD) in helmet.

Nonetheless it still need positive identification on target (by soldier look at it) because anyone does not wear IFF device cannot always be considered enemy.

Continuing the battleship discussion from last thread, I'm planning on having a class of "fat" battleships based around extremely thick armor and a very wide body to carry a huge amount of guns at the expense of speed and agility. They would probably be from the mid-20s and would have extremely wide torpedo belts and would generally be quite antiquated looking-

What sort of problems would you encounter with a design with this? This isn't supposed to be the ideal battleship, just a stepping stone design created while the nation experimented with different battleship designs and doctrines.

Q: Anything off limits?
A: In short anything which cannot be evaluated with physics. Soft FT, anything which would fall under the label alternate tech (steampunk, magitech etc), actual magic, psychic powers. Things which fall under these labels are unrealistic at birth and it is neither possible or productive to spend time discussing their realism.

I refute that discussion as to realistic applications of FanT elements should be off limits: there's precedent for its discussion here.

I know this is such a normal question and should probably be incorporated into the OP, but what is the maximum amount of men I can have in my military? I think I remember it being only a VERY small number but I also want to know how conscription effects that number.

If I take all the land that I occupy and add up the populations there, I get around 12,313,600 people. I plan on having a minimum 1.5 year conscription for all males of military age (16).

During WWII the Soviet military peaked at 6% of the population and it was probably close the absolute limit of what they could support in a total war situation.

The normal rule of thumb is no more than 3 or 4% of the population in uniform. At most. Peacetime armies very rarely reach 2%.

To finsih up and hopefully continue onto the next one, Southern Pirates/Tarkan mentioned a lightly armoured car that could drive on water in one of his rps, that with a small run-up, could build up the momentum and with great fat tyres, skim along the surface of relatively flat water. Is this feasible for presumably >5t vehicle?
