Your nation's roads and highways?

Postby Valica » Wed Aug 13, 2014 5:42 am

What is the state of your nation's roads and highways?

Are they cracked and full of potholes, or are they smooth and clean?
Are they made of asphalt or some other material?
Do you have a roadmap of your nation available?

Valica's roads and highways are made of a deep black material that absorbs 95% of light, making it appear to have no edges.
This helps remove glare and helps drivers focus on whatever is in front of them.
Not only that, but the material is so solid and smooth that roads are next to impossible to crack.
In the off chance that they do crack or cave, they are remarkably cheap to fix.

As we are comparable t being a semi-steampunk alternate reality to the human's Imperial Age, we are safe to say that major roads consist of cobblestone pathways, and poorer paths are simply, well, dirt or mud.

Our roads and highways are mostly made of asphalt, although there are still dirt roads in rural areas. Most of them are in good condition and maintained regularly, either by the authorities or by volunteering citizens (which is more common in more isolated and sparsely-populated areas).

We always make sure that our roads are in excellent condition. Same goes for our highways and railways.

Our roads are generally in great condition, though you may lower your expectations once you're on a minor road in the countryside. Our roads are generally made of asphalt, except cobblestone is used in historical areas, as well as neighbourhoods in New Istanbul. There are also dirt roads in the countryside.

Roads in the Dominion are, at best, dirt tracks running through the countryside. Save for our canal network, we have no real infrastructure to speak of here at all.

Osway historically had a totally inadequate and badly-maintained road network, as it was a relatively poor country well into the 1970s. Since then, however, helped by the discovery of vast oil and gas reserves off its shores, it has built hundreds of miles of new motorways, and today has one of the best networks of high-speed roads anywhere in the world. Because the network was built at roughly the same time, quite late by world standards, its motorways have a uniformity in their “look and feel” and design standards. There are four classes of road:

A-roads (blue signs) are equivalent to motorways or freeways. They have at least 3 lanes in each direction with full-width hard shoulders throughout. The road surface is generally asphalt, though some concrete sections survive on less important routes. The speed limit is 140 km/h (87.5 mph).

A typical rural motorway - note that we drive on the left in Osway.

B-roads (green signs) form important, long-distance links between the A-roads and are usually grade-separated 2-lane dual carriageways. They are built to lower standards than A-roads, having no hard shoulder or barriers. The speed limit is 100 km/h (62.5 mph).

A typical urban B-road.

C-roads (white signs) are less important rural roads that connect B-roads to each other, and smaller towns to the A and B road network. They are often older, single carriageway roads.
Image
A typical C-road.

D-roads are minor rural highways and E-roads are minor urban highways. Their numbers are usually not signposted.

Road maintenance is financed by vehicle taxes.Vehicles fall into five categories depending on how much damage they do to the road:

We use concrete on our roads to reduce the heat retained at night. We also use concrete because it degrades less than asphalt. Due to our tropical location, we rarely get snow in our populated areas thus we don't need to use salt, which increases corrosion on structures

Our nations are private and smooth. Some municipalities, including Boston and New York, have public roads, but they're usually disheveled.

We make sure our roads are in the best condition. Most, especially the motorways, are doubly thick and smooth.

Rural roads are not as impressive, but we do have some excellent driving roads, especially in the mountains of the Alps and Transylvania.

Initially, due to the large size of Hyfling and the sparse population in rural regions, 1950s Hyfling was notorious for its bad roads, aside from the well maintained highway between the largest cities West, North and East, leaving the smaller towns and regional areas with poor quality, in most cases dirt roads. Blackwater, Hyfling's second largest city was only accessible by train.

In the late 1960s, the nation underwent several schemes and industrialisation projects that included sweeping and expensive upgrades to the infrastructure (to help grow the economy in regional Hyfling) and allow the far flung cities to trade properly with one-another. Nowadays, Hyfling enjoys some of the best roads in the world.

Smart Asphalt Company, a company that is in charge of fixing the roads and highways, are doing it pretty good! They fill in the cracks every 2 years and replace asphalt after 20 years. So, pretty good!

Dirt paths, if even that. Our roads are so dismal that they are barely safe for walking, let alone vehicles! Everyone here travels by airship or steamboat anyway.

Roads in the Allied Connurist States are made of asphalt and are generally very well kept; and this upkeep is one of the reasons our nation has rather high taxes. However, currents plans drawn up and agreed upon by the Emperor and the government would have solar roadways implemented into the Allied Connurist States; however such an overhaul of roadways; given the large size of our nation; would be incredibly expensive and time-consuming. The nation is famed throughout the region for its long highways and brilliant driving roads in the more rural areas.

Most of the roads are well-maintained by Tell El-Muqayyar's Corps of Engineers, a part of the Army. Roads that aren't constantly monitored by the military are often property of rebel fighters, too busied with their various rebellions to maintain the roads.

Roads in the Soviet People's Republic of Chernarus are generally well maintained by the government, with some exceptions. They usually are made out of either asphalt or concrete - roads in the countryside, on the other hand, are usually dirt roads that are barely serviceable. The government has launched programs to improve these roads.

The road network within Aurensia is entirely privatized. Most larger systems of highways are interconnected by a large framework unconnected congress of road owners and construction companies. Typically, funding is supplied through the use of tolling and seasonal passes for Aurensian automobiles. At last estimate there was nearly 1,078 separate companies controlling sizable amounts of the road networks, with even more controlling less significant portions. The average price of tolls are $1.46 NSD per toll booth. Densely urbanized areas typically have a higher concentration of toll collection points.

Government vehicles are never used outside of defense and defense training situations.

Standardization of the road system in Aurensia is maintained through a generally accepted means of road connectivity. The private nature of such networks, have however, resulted in some disproportionate signage and color differentiation in regards to road markings. The automobile accounts for a large degree of personal transportation, in conjunction with the rail system and as such, roadways are constantly being constructed.

Aurensia, by length, has some 38,784 miles of expressways and nearly 3.89 million total miles of road networks. Roads in Aurensia are typically very direct and very efficient for their relative cost. Being private commodities, their maintenance is also exceptional. The ubiquity of privately owned roads has also lead the rise of "charity-roads." So-called charity roads are defined as road networks which are typically built through rural communities by non governmental organizations for ulterior motives to profit. Some of these communities also create roads as a communal volunteer effort (in especially small townships.)

Railways are a means of transportation in Aurensia that rivals the road industry.

There is no Highway system in Altaro, nor is there any form of intercity road network. Roads are confined to the cities.

Instead, the Railways dominate. Altaro has the largest Intercity Railroad Network in the world of Zero. The trains are the newest models of the Shinkansen Generation 4 Maglevs, which have a maximum speed of 725 KPH. These trains are run by the Altarian Rapid Transit System (ARTS), which is a division of the Imperial Department of Transportation. These trains can carry upwards of 2,000 people each. There are also freight Shinkansens that can carry the cargo of 1000 trucks at once.

The choosing of Railroads over Car roads was one of an environmental standpoint. By building railroad lines that run electric trains, the impact on the environment is minimized.
