On 17th April 2003 a Royal Yakus Airlines Boeing 737 was hijacked by terrorists working for the Communist Insurgency. They demanded the plane be flown to Indonesia, but there was not enough fuel. The hijackers attempted to fly back to Lesscott Airport, but a passenger revolt ensued with some of the hijackers killed by crew and passengers and the others captured. The airline pilots of the flight were killed in the battle along with 3 passengers and a female flight attendant. The plane was intercepted by two RYAF F-16 fighter aircraft, who attempted to guide the plane in for an emergency landing after hearing the hijackers had been subdued. The plane was severely off course and no suitable pilot was available. The plane crashed into the ground on part of a housing estate in the Lesscott suburbs. Of the 103 passengers, crew and hijackers on board, 98 people died on the plane and 26 die on the ground, 129 people dead in total. All the hijackers and crew died, but 5 passengers managed to survive with serious injuries. Many on the ground were also injured and fires raged for days as around 40 homes were completely destroyed. Following the incident, 13 suspected communist insurgents were arrested in relation to planning the attack and 7 received the death penalty, the rest received life prison sentences.

The worst civil aviation disaster in Walosia

A dark spring afternoon 17th April 1989, flight AIFAA2 taxied to the runway on Aristotle International Airport in central Christiania. A fully packed Airbus A380 with both foreign and domestic tourists looking for a warm holiday in central Logata. The captain on the flight was 45-year-old Augustus Loreius Collatinus, a veteran pilot. By his side was first officer Titus Sextius Augurius. This flight was Titus´s first flight as he had recently graduated from Christiania School of Aviation. On board were 320 passengers and 20 crewmembers. Already one hour delayed do to paperwork and bad weather, the aircraft was finally able to taxi to the runway and take of at 17:12. The trip was estimated to take about 4 and half hours.

Already forty-five minutes into the flight, the captain saw the warning light for the third engine starting to flash. The captain turned the throttle to the third engine completely off. This worked for 15 minutes before the third engine erupted in flames. Augustus immediately activated the fire extinguisher function and the flames were put out. However, the engine continued to spew out black dust and smoke, which upset a lot of the passengers, but the crew managed to calm them down. The flight would stay stable for another 60 minutes until the 2nd hour mark was reached. A gas leak on the left wing caused both engines to erupt in flames, immediately reducing the power of the jet to ¼ of its original power. The plane started to lose altitude and Augustus contacted Tiaelia airport, a small airport in Akropolis, but before they were able to make contact, the plane suddenly nose-dived. Both August and Titus tried, with all their strength, to level the airplane. After 14 seconds in a complete nose-dive, the pilots managed to regain some control of the plane. After 30 seconds of control, the left wing suddenly ripped itself apart from the plane, sending the plane into a twirl the pilots were unable to stabilize.

The plane crashed into an open plain just outside of Eldycia (fourth largest city in Akropolis). All 340 passengers and crewmembers died on impact. Fire service and ambulances rushed to the scene along with WCAA investigators (Walosian Civil aviation authority). After two days of searching, the black boxes were discovered and its data was analyzed. In the final report by the WCAA, the cause of the crash was pilot error and engine failure. According to Walosian protocol, once a fire breaks out and an engine fails, the pilot has to initiate emergency landing and safely land the plane at the nearest airport. Augustus had broken the protocol and continued with the flight, even when the third engine erupted into flames. If Augustus had followed protocol, the lives might have been saved. The engine failure was because of a gas leak that released gasoline into the engine causing the fires. With the 340 deaths, this accident is known as the worst in Walosian aviation history. This accident caused major changes in the aviation business and prompted the government to focus on developing airplane running on other fuel than gasoline. The first airplane using electricity was developed in 2001 and the first using hydrogen was developed in 2004. The first electric hybrid jumbo jet was released in 2014 and the first hydrogen hybrid jumbo jet is scheduled to be released in 2019.

On the 21st of July 1989, Turkistan International Airlines flight TIA24 from Avyaziya Azra Ersöy International Airport to Antalya was shot down over the West Bank by PFLP terrorists. The aircraft was a Boeing 767-300 carrying 217 passengers. 198 died. The PFLP at first denied responsibility but then claimed it. They say they mistook it for an Israeli aircraft.

OOC: This post is about the Merinda Crash, I have already posted a whole thread about it, but this will be a summary. I will most likely change a few things from what I have previously posted. The thread in question was made in late 2012, when I was new to Nationstates (and I am unable to access it because my mac says it has virus). This is the canon story of the disaster. I might change something in the future. I also might expand the “article” since this one is kind off short



Night to 10th May 2016, a Walosian Ulyssies X2 aircraft crashed in Lake Enonia just outside of the small city of Lockhead. Lake Enonia is Lockheads drinking water and just two days later, symptoms of a mysterious virus started to spread among Lockheads population. But before we can talk about the aftermath of the crash, we have to look at a little backstory.

Ever since Walosia first developed the atomic bomb in 1839, the Walosian department of defense has been developing new advanced weaponry. The K19 virus is one of these weapons. The experimentations and development of this virus started in early 2000 and was completely off the radar. Only a handful of people knew about its existence and even fewer knew what it was. Merinda was tasked with carrying samples of the virus from a base in Memosa to a base in Akropolis. This virus was airborne and could be transmitted by liquid. When Merinda crashed into Lake Enonia, the virus spread to the town’s drinking water and the effects was disastrous. By the second day, 30% of the population had been infected with the virus and by the fourth day; over half of the population was infected.

The military sent troops to Lockhead and completely sealed off the city to quickly eradicate the virus. However, this was no easy task as the people who were infected quickly became frantic and desperate. The virus targeted the victim’s brains and, in short, turned the victim into a bloodthirsty madman who would kill everyone in its path. On the sixth day, the military was ordered to round up the infected and detain them, but on the night to the 7th day, twenty infected managed to break out of the city and this is how the infection spread to New Memosa. The virus spread to the city of New Memosa and this again forced the government to seal of the city. However, this time they where tasked with eliminating the subjects. This lead to the largest loss of life in Walosia until the Explorius attacks. During the fighting, about 2 000 infected was shot and killed by Walosian soldiers. The city of Lockhead was also bombed and the citizens was ordered to flee.

On 24th May 2016, sixteen days after the crash, the Walosian soldiers, in protest, lay down their arms and refuses to kill the remaining subjects. The shocking part is that the government, in developing the virus, also developed a cure. Now, the government was forced to use it. Soldiers tracked down the infected and forcibly inject them with the antidote. The antidote was also released over New Memosa by air. Why the government decided to not use the antidote first is a question that will remain unanswered.

This incident sparked outrage among the Walosian public and numerous protest took place, particularly in front of the senate. The Walosian Supreme court charged the government with war crimes and crimes against the Walosian people and the president (Lery Mark Jenkins) was sentenced to life in prison. Today, most of the damaged buildings in New Memosa are rebuilt and the virus is again under control. When the temporary government took over, they disbanded the development of any biological weapons and ordered the destruction of the remaining K19 viruses in Walosian possession. Today, Lockhead is a ghost town, as the citizens who were forced to flee did not want to return to their homes, most of the 565 citizens now live in New Memosa. With over 2 000 dead, this remains the worst military aviation disaster in Walosian history. The cause of the crash has been confirmed to be engine error.

Of course, the fact that there was a military battle on the plane meant only the copilot and a civilian survived the shootout , an 8 year old kid named Dimitri, who would later become the Lagrier of Moguchiy.

Worst aviation disaster with a Gingeska aircraft was 16 October 1972. Air Gingeska flight 174 (an Ilyushin Il-18) crashed due to weather and pilot error, killing 98 people.

Worst aviation disaster in our Airspace was 8 December 1988. Maxuel Northern Airlines flight 245 (McDonnell Douglas DC-10).
The flight had communication and navigation problems, and entered Gingeska airspace unknowingly. After communication could not be established, 2 Gingeska air force MiG-23 intercepted the aircraft and fired warning shots across the nose. This warning was ignored, and the Aircraft was shot down by an R-27 (AA-10 Alamo) missile-- killing all 286 people on board. An official investigation by the GAF determined that the base commander was at fault for giving the order to engage. This led to new rules of engagement being adopted.

On 27 June 2018, at approximately 13:22, Skyline Airways Flight 302 was attempting to land at Hoji International Airport
following a routine flight out of Haiwansho Shores, Okazaki when the airliner lost all radio communication function with the HJI
control tower. Skyline Airways Flight 302 then collided with Territorial Airlines Flight 660, which had just left Hoji International Airport
on an outbound international flight to Albavona, Unified Beretania.

Hoji International Airport has the unique distinction of having a cemetary containing empty graves on the airport grounds.
Named headstones memorialize all 834 lost in the disaster, a sobering reminder of that fateful day. The disaster caused Territorial Airlines
to go bankrupt.
