      ETYMOLOGY

"Ostronopolis" is the English translation of "Austrikopoli." The entirety of the word comes from translations from Ellinusian. "Austri" meaning "sea" in reference to the astronomical figure, and "ik" which is a conjunctive, and "opoli" which uses the intil 'o' to develop the term into a plural form. "poli" means "city" or "place" so the exact meaning would be "city of sea" or "place of sea" which many linguists and historians postulate to be in reference to Ostronopolis being a seafaring nation.

The first official use of "Austrikopoli" comes very early in the nation's history. Shortly after the creation of distinguished city states along the coasts of southern Ellorea, the peoples began to refer to themselves by their individual cities. However, as cities became increasingly interlinked, ethnicities along the coasts began referring to themselves as "Queocians" and "Eniations" the two major ethnicities that populate Ostronopolis today. It was shortly thereafter that the two similar ethnicities began intermixing linguistics and creating protomodern Ellinusian. To describe the entirety of the peoples in the region, most linguists believe they pointed to a common trait which was seafaring. Thus, "place of sea people" which would have been shortened over time in reference to the entirety of the political entity. Though still separate in city states, they seemed to share a common heritage of coming from "Austrikopoli" or the anglicized, Ostronopolis. The first published work was in Lokoros's epic "Orintha" which made reference to the "land of the sea people" later translated to the linkage, "Austrikopoli" or Ostronopolis.

In modern political history, the state of Ostronopolis began to be reffered to as the Ostronopolian Empire somewhere around the turn of 500 B.C.E. In contemporary history, the adoption of the term, "Republic of Ostronopolis" is in reference to the adoption of the Laws of Binding around 1000 C.E. Today's current form, "The Most Noble Republican Union of Ostronopolis" was first officially used in the adoption of a decree in 1843, by then Regents Festus and Lopaieos, which reaffirmed the Union that was the nation.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of Ostronopolis is as an Ostronopolian. To refer to it adjectivally, it is also through the term "Ostronopolian."
