*I am 90% sure this goes here.

What are the problems with hovertanks? These rebel guys use hovertanks as their main AFV's due to them being inexpensive, easy to train a crew in and maintain, with some heavier tread tanks. The hovertanks are basically light tanks, with lighter armament and such then the rebels treaded tanks.

Put tracks on 'em. Tracks don't break down and don't burn fuel just sitting there.

How did you conclude that hover tanks would be cheaper and easier to maintain?

So I guess I'll have to get rid of the inexpensive piece. :/

I also figured that hovertanks fit into the whole rebel doctrine of "Destroy shit then run like hell". Through I don't know if they actually do.

If not I'll go screw it and give them tracks.

Ford-I just wrote why the rebels used them and went "Maybe I should get that checked" thus why I'm here. The models they use are also cheap.

Tracked tanks do both of the latter.

then what on earth happened here?

Detracking aside, treads are much more cost-effective than hover equipment. They also require a lot less internal space, as you don't need huge fans everywhere to maintain enough air pressure to keep a 50+ tonne machine airborne, and use a lot less fuel.

But this being a Zeinbrad question, I recommend that if you're planning on doing a non-realistic FT setting, it's much easier to do a basic "it's sci-fi so there are hovercrafts" handwave and leave it at that.

Hovertanks, assuming anti-gravity tech, would likely be harder to maintain and repair than conventionally propelled vehicles. Why rebels who are acting as guerillas would use high-tech, resource-intensive gear is beyond me.

Uh, a tracked vehicle doesn't use energy to levitate. Also, what if your levitation unit breaks down? That's a bit harder to fix than a track.

If tracks break, the vehicle is immobilized BUT the impact of a hover tank that suddenly stops hovering on one side immobilizes that hovertank more thoroughly.

The main problem with hovertanks that there's a huge limit to how well-armored they can be. Why won't the hovertanks get shot up by enemy heavy machineguns?

Ah, yes, I remember... the old "stop, turn off engine, aim, fire, turn on engine, warm up engine, drive" cycle used before stabilizers entered widespread service.

They do, however, burn a lot less fuel while stationary than hovercrafts, whether anti-gravity or air-blown.

And thus the hovertanks were taken out and replaced with tracked tanks.

Thanks.

Tracked vehicles don't levitate, hence don't waste energy on it. Bit yeah, the point was that they burn way less fuel when idling. When moving, too.

Plus they can turn tighter than hovertanks can, when moving.

An anti-gravity tank would should not need to burn fuel.

It would get flung into interplanetary space though.

A little bit off-topic, but there's a fairly important debate going on concerning the position of RPers on this site - I know most of us here are avid designers as part of a broader RPing presence, so it's probably something that's worth keeping up with and possibly contributing to.

Carry on as usual. MA11 variants coming up at some point (will update list duly).

I saw that proposal, all I could think was how monumentally retarded the whole proposal was.
