Well, you can't say the same for the Soviets because the T-72 hardly saw combat in their hands. Iraqi T-72's at least have the experience of the Iran-Iraq War and Desert Storm (although they did almost nothing to their Abrams counterparts in the latter).

If you removed the Abrams' advanced fire control and IR observation system it'd do little better than T-72s in the Iran-Iraq war.
The optics and fire control are an inherent part of the tank.
