The advantage of railguns is that they have less parasitic mass than chemical energy guns.

They are more efficient, it's true, but that is not their main advantage. If you all you want is to fire a projectile with 10 megajoules or 30 megajoules of energy, a conventional gun system will be a fraction of the size (not to mention cost/complexity) of the equivalent railgun system.

Frankly the only reason railguns are even worth considering is because their efficiency does not fall off at very high muzzle velocities. It is not a coincidence that railgun applications which receive the most money are naval artillery, air defense and anti-armor. In all three velocity is of paramount importance.

Well, you can't say the same for the Soviets because the T-72 hardly saw combat in their hands. Iraqi T-72's at least have the experience of the Iran-Iraq War and Desert Storm (although they did almost nothing to their Abrams counterparts in the latter).

If you removed the Abrams' advanced fire control and IR observation system it'd do little better than T-72s in the Iran-Iraq war.

The optics and fire control are an inherent part of the tank.

The T-64 sort of blows the idea of the 'Eastern Philosophy' out of the water.

Complex, expensive, very high performance... it was a true premium tank that put quality first.

Well, what do we define as eastern philosophy? Most WARPAC tanks trended to being smaller than their NATO equivalents, they standardised on 125mm when NATO went to 105/120mm, but other than that, what makes an 'eastern' tank eastern?

I would say Soviet tanks are defined by the compromise of interior space to minimize the profile and the highly 'optimized' protection, in that areas less likely to be hit like the lower hull, side, and rear are noticeably less well-armored than on Western counterparts.

These design decisions lend themselves to the use of autoloader and characteristics of being relatively smaller and lighter as well.

I'm fairly sure the Abrams is overall more well-armored than the T-72. That, and the US had access to superior munitions for their tank guns while the Iraqi's munitions at their disposal were rather inadequate.

Of course, the result would have been pretty much the same even if the US and Iraq swapped tanks.

Soviet style tanks are defined as to being knocked out at 1,500+ meters by Sergeant Any Amurican and his crew of hearty lads rolling in their M1A1 Abrams moving at 40 km/h as VII corps rolls it way towards Moscow.
