As a MT reserve unit, for last ditch-defense and to a small extent training of the reservists.

Yes wheeled armored vehicles have some issues.

However unless you have 100000000000 dollars like the US, you can't afford a totally tracked APC force.

Pershing.

The T-29s extra armor and bigger gun are just dead weight against modern opponents.

Okay, so basing your NS tanks on World of Tanks is a bad idea. Honestly, the M47 would make for an excellent Class C and training tank, while not being as absurdly obsolescent as the M26. And it would likely be cheaper, since afaik there were never large stocks of Pershings exported. I might be wrong, however.

EDIT: In addition, they can be upgunned with the 105mm L7 and the AVDS-1790-2 diesel from the M60A1, which provides a huge firepower and mobility boost over the basic petrol engine and 90mm gun.

While I too think that the M47 is a quite formidable tank, I just wanted some obsolete WW II materiel in storage, I think I will go with Jumbo 76 Shermans and Super Pershings. I just like the idea of museum pieces, much like Soviet category C units equipped with T-34s and ISs.

In how far is the normal M26 gun comparable to the Super Pershing version in a MT setting, given HEAT ammo for it?

Regular. Pershing.

The Super Pershings extra armor and longer gun amount to absolutely nothing against modern opponents.

First, not even Category C units are equipped with T-34-85s and IS-2/3/4s anymore. They have T-55s almost exclusively, maybe some T-62s.

Also, 90mm HEAT ammo from a rifled gun is pitiful, even if you apply modern technology to it. The only WWII tank that can be realistically used in MT formations is the T-44, because it had (barely) enough room in the turret to mount the 100mm gun. Heck, you might be able to upgrade T-44s to 125mm guns. That would make for a laugh. :P

From what I understand, IS-2's and IS-3's can be used as impromptu artillery piece, and a lot of WWII tanks could certainly be used solely as fire support to infantry.

Using IS-2/3s as artillery has a certain symmetry to it, since the D-25T is a variant of the A-19 gun-howitzer. :P

In a similar but opposite vein, what's the closest range I could theoretically take, say, a PzH-2000, and use its gun in a direct-fire role against say, an MBT?

Then about eight meters. Not sure I would recommend that though...

Its a gun, it has no "minimum range".

Well, if you're having to use your PzH2000 as a direct-fire AT gun, you've already lost. Other than that, closest range would probably be around 50m, but that would still be really risky.
