Slather it in ERA.
You'll never defeat the most modern rounds because they are designed to defeat anything you can get. Russian tech tends to sit behind Western tech, even if only a little bit, and even if only because of budgets.
So just slather it in ERA. You can never go wrong. Except after your ERA tiles are used up.

Of course ERA doesn't last long and if the enemy has some advanced ERA-baiting tandem HEAT shell* then it may well be dead-weight.

It'd also imply that Russia's "budget issues" wouldn't be all that simple to overcome - again, partly because the production base probably isn't there.
Of course, depending on grounded you'd like to play, all of what I said could have been meaningless.

We've got soviet equipment earlier, but now decided to switch to nearly completly domestic production of equipment, which would include own development of ERA etc. (so theoretically we're not hampered by budget issues of nowadays russian army and the "stagnation" of designs that heavily^^)
My current idea would be that:
The decision to get the soviet equipment and continue to use it and it's "design style" of rather low-weight, mobile tanks has to do with the enviroment of my country (islands and the need to carry it from Island A to B, terrain of the islands) and the doctrinal use of them, which requires mobile tanks with rather low weight. At the same time I require crew safety, as I don't have manpower to spare (well... even more then other countriesDue to low population of 7 million). (and I like their looks
)
Use of the tanks would include acting as a QRF reacting on enemy beach landings and fending it off. In this regard I guess glacis armour is not THAT important compared to turret armour, so at least the turret should be able to resist hits of fielded tanks guns and AT(GM) launchers frontally/the top.
Any flaws with the thoughts?^^
