Phone numbers and area codes in your nation

Postby Osway » Wed Jun 18, 2014 11:24 am

In Osway, telephone numbers are 11 digits long including the trunk digit 0. The international prefix is +429. When calling from abroad, the initial 0 is omitted.

Osway uses area codes, which are 3 or 4 digits long and local numbers which are 6, 7 or 8 digits long.

The 01 range

01xx xxx xxxx - This is the format used by large businesses, they cost the same to call as a normal landline number. They are non-geographic and so must be dialled in full.

The 02-07 ranges

(0x0) xxxx xxxx - This is the format used by the 8 largest cities (000 and 010 are omitted)
(0x1) xxxx xxxx - This is the format used by the next 8 largest cities (001 and 011 are omitted)
(0xxx) xxx xxxx - This is the format used by large and medium sized towns.
(0xxx) xxx xxx - This is the format used by small towns and rural areas.

Area codes are generally assigned on a geographic basis:

02 North
03 North-east
04 Central
05 West
06 North-west
07 South

The 08 range

Used by businesses and government (086 and 087 are unused)

080, 081, 082, 083 Free
084, 085 Government
088, 089 Premium rate

The 09 range

098 is used for direct-dial VOIP services. All others are used for mobiles and pagers.

Special numbers

These nearly always begin with 1, so subscriber numbers never begin with 1. Some common ones are:

112 Emergency
102 Medical helpline
103 Child helpline
104 Suicide helpline
123 Speaking clock
120 Directory enquiries
1501 Call return

In Mercia-Northumbria, area codes either begin with 1, 2, 3 or 4 and local numbers begin with 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. Because of this, there is no leading digit. If the area code is the same you just dial the local number. All area codes have three digits and local numbers have 6 or 7 digits.

Example: +876 121 501 7791 (a number in Manjasal, the capital)

Within Manjasal: 501 7791
Within Mercia-Northumbria, outside Manjasal: 121 501 7791
Outside Mercia-Northumbria: 00876 121 501 7791

Another example: +876 429 636 104 (a number in Hebernstva, a rural district)

Within Hebernstva: 636 104
Within Mercia-Northumbria, outside Hebernstva: 429 636 104
Outside Mercia-Northumbria: 00876 429 636 104

Area codes beginning with "1" are reserved for large cities, where local numbers have 7 digits. Area codes beginning with "2" or "3" are for smaller towns and rural areas, where local numbers have 6 digits. Area codes beginning with "4" are new codes created to address the shortage of codes.

The lowest area code is 121, because 11x series is reserved for special numbers (such as 119 - Emergency). So 121 is the code for the capital, Manjasal. Other area codes are:

122 - Ivanstor
124 - Kaláry
125 - Austva
126 - Zapadnia Mesta
127 - Strekstva

The telecommunication system is organized on a state-by-state basis. Each state is independent from each other.

1-digit and 2-digit numbers are reserved for government agencies within each state. Most private numbers are 4 digits, 5 digits, 6 digits, or 7 digits; because of the variable number of digits, two pound keys (#) are dialled at the end of the number.

For out-of-state calls, you need to call: 100 Operator and directory, to put you through to another state's telephone system. This involves speaking with a live agent and specifying that state.

Rejistanian phone numbers are a bit of a mess. First, of course, because of the so called eskali codes (from escalate and kali, which means city), which often differ not only based on city but also on phone company. So if you live in Najajara kali, the eskali is 12791 if you are with Konihekta and 23715 with Taikha. Not all phone companies do bother with eskali at all 41441 is the eskali for every rejistanian customer of Selitel. Then they are a mess because the length of the phone numbers differ based on the area between 4 digits and 9 digits. Still think the system is redeemable? Let me explain you that the zero is pretty much used in the opposite manner as it is internationally: 00 for a call within the same eskali code, 0 for a call in the same country, and just the country code and phone number for an international call.
So if Simna Sxaltu in KaMaRi kali wants to call Jeru Hakat, if they both use Konihekta, she would dial 00 715 127 423. If Jeru decides to go with another company, say Teletani, she would have to dial 0 88143 715 127 423. If Jeru was in Mercia-Northumbria, Simna would dial 876 121 501 7791.

Oh, and from abroad, our international prefix is +512.

If you are calling from another country, you need to add +177 to the number.

Each province gets an area code:

Baskent - 737
Guney - 692
Kuzey - 209
Dogu - 499
Bati - 185

An example of a phone number would be 737-246-8143.

The only emergency number is 911, though there also emergency hotlines but they have their own number which are usually easy to remember (such as Child Help, 737-111-222).

Florian: +737
North Hyfling +555
Great Southern +377
Aurelia +272

We have no area codes. It always seemed silly to us to have such a format. We also don't have a limit on the amount of digits in our numbering system.

The first radio-communicator was assigned the number 1. Every communicator activated since then has been numbered incrementally by default, though there are permutations in this part of the system due to people switching old numbers to new devices.

If you bought such a communicator in a store today, its number would be something like 5,980,000,000,000,985. This high number results from a couple of things. First, numbers are retired when a communicator was taken permanently offline unless the device's owner chooses to port his number to a new device. We don't use the practice of reassigning numbers to other people, because who wants to get somebody else's calls for six months or a year after activating a "new" number? Here, new numbers are NEW.

The other thing that has caused our radio-communicator numbers to be so high is simply how long this has been going on. We've had the same system for about 700 years now. This, combined with the lack of number recycling, means that we've churned through a whole lot of numbers.

Remembering such huge numbers, and running systems to accommodate them, is no problem for us. Since we're robots, we memorize them as complete units rather than series of individual digits, so it's no harder for us to remember who has communicator #1 than communicator #5,980,000,000,000,985. We also made sure to design the (nonsapient) comms controller to be able to handle ridiculous amounts of numbers right from the start. Currently, it can take care of about 1/4-googol numbers, and we don't expect to have to upgrade this aspect of it in the foreseeable future.

(As for who owns Communicator #1, it's Leader Megatron - but he got so many calls on it that it was made effectively useless. It now sits in a drawer unused, and his current direct number is classified.)

The entire nation of Bongo Johnson has one area code - 13 - negating the need to dial it before the person you are trying to call. Numbers are six digits long and given in three sets of two numbers.

Ex. 1 - 25 71 00

The number for emergencies is 000. Information services is 111. All international calls must be dialed with a 99 prefix followed by that country's area code and the phone number.

The current system dates three hundred years back to 2280, when the Yulisian states were originally created.
For landlines, a prefix, 10 - 31, denotes which state, a four digit component, which generally gives an indication of where the landline is (your neighbour is likely to have the same four digits in the middle of their phone number, your friend, who lives a couple of blocks away, might have a similar four digits but your parents, who live in another city entirely, will have a completely different four digits. The second four digits are completely random and give no indication of where the landline is.
Examples would be:
10 4548 9316 (you)
10 4548 2982 (your neighbour)
10 4544 1047 (your friend)
10 2265 3757 (your parents)

Mobile numbers are different

In Transmarvia, area codes have 2 or 3 digits and subscriber numbers have 6 or 7 digits. To dial a number in a different area code, dial a "1" followed by the code and the subscriber number. This "1" is not dialled when calling from abroad, for example:

(263) 515 898

Within Alvānia: 515 898
Outside Alvānia: 1 263 515 898
Ouside Transmarvia: +693 263 515 898

Dialling "1" before the area code uses the phone company you are registered with. However, you can also use special prefixes to predetermine which phone company your call will be routed through:

09 01 Telex
09 021 Orange
09 023 Vericom
09 05 Bleuciel
09 06 T&CT
09 14 TeleNova
09 15 Parōle-Tape
09 89 Reversō (reverse-charges call)

Area codes are assigned in numbered zones:

2xx: West Halnedōniya
3xx: Central Halnedōniya
4xx: North-East Halnedōniya
5xx: South-East Halnedōniya
6xx: South Halnedōniya
7xx: West Atēniōniya
8xx: Central & South Atēniōniya
9xx: East Atēniōniya

Large cities have 2-digit area codes beginning with "1", or ending with "1" or "0":

10: Innantiya
11: Eupendi
21: Meso-montēge
30: Citenove

Free numbers have the non-geographic codes 800 and 808, and premium rate services have 898 and 900.

Mobile numbers have the area code they were registered in, but the first digit of the subscriber number is always "9", so 326 950 662 is a mobile number, while 326 850 662 is an ordinary landline. Mobile numbers must always be dialled in full.

Special numbers begin with "0" such as:

00: Emergency (planned to be 000 later)
01: Operator
02 xxx: Various local services, such as non-emergency police hotlines etc.
03 xxx: Various local services
04 xxx: Social services
05 xxx: Telephone services such as 05 015 (voicemail) and 05 115 (call return).
06 xxx: Reserved for future use
09: Carrier pre-select

To call abroad, dial 9 then the country code, e.g. to call Mercia-Northumbria you would dial 9876 429 636 104.

Here is an example number: (306) 555-0100

Bethlehem: 555-0100
Rest of Luziyca: (306) 555-0100
Rest of the world: +1 306 555-0100

The brackets are the area code, +1 is our international dialing code, 555 is the central exchange code, and 0100 is the subscriber number.
