Those things are for the smart soldiers to do. The stupid ones get to stick their head out with a TV camera on top to guide in mortar fire close to them by shouting.

If you hire stupid people to fight you loose out on a lot of potential. Why do you think the US Army and Marines require a high school diploma?

Where is that statistic from?

Some random book full of stats and jokes. Don't remember the name but it was a big collection of things. Came from the mid-1990s IIRC.

Also you don't have to be able to read a map to call in artillery. You just have to be able to read your GPS coordinates and guess distance and direction. And that can even be simplified by having a compass and a range finder of some sort.

I still think the Army trains platoon NCOs and platoon leaders the basics of calling fire support. They could still stick a FO in a platoon in case they need more than just the PSG calling the shots.

Granted, I think it really only makes a difference "close up,"[....]

It's not that you think it only makes a difference close up, it's that it only actually makes a difference close up. It's like determining the distance to a star. They determine the distances to stars over a half-year period to get the greatest possible range between two measurement points (One side of earth orbit, other side of earth orbit.)

@purp It's cheaper to train your soldiers in proper radio protocol for several reasons.
One, you have less confusion, less time spent, as time = money, less money spent.
Two, you waste less ammunition for your artillery, allowing you to get more ammunition where it's needed, namely on target, not a few hundred or thousand metres short or long.
Three, they might actually learn to aim before they shoot, which means that instantly 46% of your bullets become more effective by virtue of being sent closer to where they need to be.
Four, YOU SAVE MONEY AMMUNITION AND TIME. ;)

There are times when you have to though. Like say in case of a total war.

So you have smart soldiers, they direct the artillery. Even if 20% of your force is so stupid they can't use a compass to do some basic artillery directing that means 80% of your force is smart enough to do it. So unless you have taken 80% casualties the smart guy can direct the fire. Problem solved.

Well this gear would, as I explained not really be for actual observers but for the average idiot pressed into the role. As in, the average cannon fodder guy that has to step up and guide mortar fire on top of him self to die for the sake of my story.

Have the soldier get a visor in which a GPS map grid coordinate is seen (The soldier's position). Tell him that that is where he needs to call in the mortar strike if he's overrun. (Although your infantry may have a problem with twelve digits of map grid information, which could be gotten around by embedding it in the video, along with a compass, rangefinder, cant and tilt angles, and a crosshair.)

This is surely cheaper than a day's worth of map-reading training and making compasses.

That means he can't do his job as a forward observer and call artillery to direct their fire. In this instance, he's not being smart. He's being stupid for not doing his duty to his country and comrades by directing fire.

Yep, especially for a day's worth of map-reading training and compassess for Purpelian impromptu forward observers.
Sidenote: Cammenga 3H is about $150, new.

There are plenty of brave smart people. The two are almost completely separate factors. But hey if you are so determined to just stick completely useless heavy cameras on your troops go for it.

To have the mortar team not have to rely on some idiot shouting "my other left!" without me having to train a proper spotter.

The US Army issued a range-data estimation card at some point or other. By holding your hand in front of your face, making a variety of shapes and matching them to your background - you can estimate range accurate to ~100m.

Traced an AK barrel and stuck it in my 5.56 rifle, it looks somewhat better now.

Opinions? I think I'm about done with the lineart phase except for the bolt and safety plus minor details.

Just so you know, you can get rid of the little "notch" about halfway down the barrel if you want to do so. That is there for the standard AK handguard retainer's latch mechanism, which your rifle apparently does not use. What kind of muzzle device do you plan on using, by the way?

Gotcha.

Ref. muzzle device: Right now it's just a generic NATO-style 5.56 birdcage. Been considering a Tantal-style brake also.
