An "Attack Helicopter Regiment" as attached to a Soviet Army formation was appraised at 40 Hinds, 20 Hips, arranged as two squadrons to one.

A Front featured five Army formations, and a further regiment (or more) was attached to "Air Forces of the Front".

I don't know if we give advice for uninspired RTS RP settings or not. I, for one, am getting tired of seeing you just come, post, and never mention it again. It's like you don't even try to make this stuff yourself.

That's nice and all, but this has been the fourth cookie-cutter trope nation you've created.

Are tiltjets instead of tiltrotors for PMT (2020-2050) a terrible idea?

I thought 'yes,' but the cool is very tempting.

Tiltjets are pretty bad, conceptually. They will guzzle more fuel and also be dangerous. Not only will the downblast be significant, but it could blast debris from the ground at the aircraft. This will also damage roadways, carrier decks, rooftops and helipads, of course.

but but muh cool

Alright, thanks for the tip. So, basically, rotor aviation doesn't change (propulsion-wise) because of future cool.

Unfortunately ducted fans don't work either, so my "urban helicopter" idea doesn't work without the use of handwavium

Thought that a ducted fan or jet engine would be better in an urban area due to the reduced risk of rotor strike, or some such nonsense

Ducted fans should work fine, IIRC. Ducted fans generate additional lift from the ducting and as you said, rotor strike. I mean, you're still going to hit things, but the damage will be lessened and the results less catastrophic.

The fan will strike the now dented duct and disintegrate if you hit something. The thing about aircraft is that they never do well when they fly into anything but air and some rain.

Yep. Also, the duct is pretty heavy and cuts into the lift capacity so you're probably better off using rotors.

Well I was thinking of that one scene from Batman where they strung a rope between buildings and that wrecked the rotors. Also there's shit like powerlines and all that.

Having a ducted fan could help, I think, especially when you add Kiowa blade thingies for cutting.

IIRC, with the flying infantryman concepts, the addition of ducting improved capabilities immensely. As well as not making them stupidly dangerous, just dangerous.

It will never change.

You might see V-22s with some sort of jet propulsion, but never helicopters. Not even in 40,000 years.

Produces less thrust per unit of fuel burned. This is fundamental.

The only advantage to using an alternative propulsion system is if you want to fly forward much faster. And if you want to do that, a helicopters aerodynamics just will not do, what you end up with is the V-22. Air will never change, so this will hold true regardless of the tech level. The "Orca" helicopter/vtol is a purely artistic license.
