That raises a question

if someones MANPAD locked onto a tank, would it actually do anything to the tank? From my understanding MANPADs don't have very powerful warheads-

Add enough parachutes and you could probably air drop anything. The problem more is that heavier vehicles require their crews to parachute down seperatly.

If I rember correctly the US might have looked at the ability to drop an M1 and decided that while it was possible (with crew going down seperatly) it had no practical use.

The utility would be pretty low I admit, if only because heavy MBTs need a logistics train you can't really airdrop effectively

Yes, for example, the FiM-92 carries a much smaller warhead than any modern TOW.

Though it would probably be flying into the rear exhaust so there's that to consider. :)

Padnak wrote:The utility would be pretty low I admit, if only because heavy MBTs need a logistics train you can't really airdrop effectively
Exactly, there's a point where it's just not cost effective/practical to be bothered with dropping it.

No it can't, it weighs 42 and a half tons.
The BMD-4 is having trouble not destroying itself and it weighs 14 tons.

Again, with the amount of parachutes you would need it would just be better to develop a light tank-chan.

If a MANPAD hit a falling tank, it wouldn't need to damage the tank at all. Gravity will destroy it after the parachutes carrying it are destroyed from the explosion.

Quite heavily.
It's not the ambient heat, it's the fact that you're being very active in a sealed man-rubber.

Your artillery's rate of fire will decrease. Its time to set up will increase. Your infantry's ability to perform in general combat will be reduced.
Your turunaround time for the maintenance, resupplying and anything else of vehicles will increase, not least for decontamination concerns.

So let's talk about airdropping MBTs: If they're light enough, then, certainly. Don't rely on it, however.

Actually yes that's true, the blast will probably be enough to cut the parachute cables.

Not even that. The blast and shrapnel cloud will shred the chutes themselves. Upon which that expensive MBT and it's crew will make a lovely crater in the ground.

I know I know

a combination of this and lots and lots of parachutes and you could drop anything

where you want to is another question, but it could be done

I like the idea of suddenly a tank regiment shows up with little warning on a lightly/ non defended piece of territory then begins operations, even if air dropping main battle tanks is extremely impractical outside of circumstances like that-

I'm going to lineart a light tank of my own... at some point.

If only because Sprut-chan had that mysterious high-publicity engine fire I keep reading about.

Just do what the VDV did and drop BMDs and BTR-Ds. Airlifting an entire mechanized VDV regiment already took between 90 and 120 An-22s, and that was with three AFVs per plane.

If you're actively engaged in a war that involves massed air drop attacks, generally hostile forces would be concentrated around were your forces are concentrated, or thats what I would assume, so having a tank regiment open up a new area of engagement a thousand km away is probably not going to meet significant resistance if its in an area where little or no combat is expected
