A few questions:

1. What are the relations between the Tyrannian Orthodox Church and the state (MT)?

The Empire keeps out of religious affairs, the Church out of political affairs. The only real link is that the Church sees the Emperor as the Holy Roman Emperor, the Co-ruler of Christ on Earth; the Emperor doesn't confirm or deny this, to keep the peace between Orthodoxy and the other major religion, Tyranno-Roman paganism.
2. Just for the heck of it, I'm going to ask if I could be mentioned somewhere. We fought once, remember? New Imperial Tyrannia (at first) and Old Tyrannia (after you forgot NIT's password) were invading Seculartopia, I was aiding in their defense, et cetera...

I may add you next time I decide to update it.

Very good, thanks.

What is the rank system for your armed forces, and do you have any images of the insignias?

I haven't fully worked out the ranks yet. The army roughly follows the Roman system, though;

Imperator (Commander-in-Chief) --> Legatus (Commander of a Legion) --> Tribune --> Centurion (Commander of a Century) --> Principal (Cavalry or Tank Commander) --> Salarius --> Duplicarius (Senior Non-Commissioned Officer) --> Sesquiplicarius (Junior NCO) --> Immunis (Specialist, i.e. Heavy Weapons squad, Engineers, Medics) --> Discens (Miles training for a specialist role) --> Miles (Private) --> Tiro (Recruit)

Navy and airforce aren't sorted out yet, though the ranks of 'admiral' and 'captain' are present in the naval chain of command. I don't have any insignias for my forces.

OOC: Ah it's good to find another decent Fascist state in a world where all the others are a bunch of moronic, buffoon white-supremacist High Schoolers who have no comprehension of Fascism, Nazism, or any other related ideology. I was wondering if an alliance between you and I could be made? I'd be quite delighted if so.

BTW, I noticed the obvious Dinosaurs on your nation, particularly the Tyrannosaur. If we do have an alliance, and a visitation RP commences, I'd love to do a hunting RP between my character [General-Major King Miyamoto-Maximilian Von Clausewitz] and a rather nasty T-Rex (or T-Aug in this case). I think you'll find the RP... entertaining...

I would be happy to negotiate an alliance with you if you so wished.

Unfortunately, as the national animal of the Empire Tyrannosaurus is highly exhalted and protected by the State. Hunting it is forbidden for all but the Emperor and it is very much a matter of honour that no foreigner may slay a T. rex (or augustus) as doing so is symbolic of 'slaying' the Empire. Which basically means killing one would get your nation nuked. You could quite happily hunt Carcharodontosaurus or Carnotaurus if you wished, though. They are just as capable of tearing you apart and eating you. Not as famous, admittedly, but both would make fine trophies and Carnotaurus even has a very highly prized pair of horns.

*sigh* -_-

I suppose that'll do. King has made a list of dinos' he'd like to hunt. He'll gladly pay the permits and whatnot. And no doubt he'll respect you wildlife policies. King himself is a master safari "White Hunter", and is also the Huntsmaster of Nürmaria. He oversees all of the Game Wardens in Nürmaria, and personally has a deep respect for his prey. Here is the list of selected animals:

  • Carnotaurus
  • Carcharodontosaurus
  • Gigantosaurus
  • Spinosaurus
  • Allosaurus
  • Tarbosaurus

If you could, could you reorder this from the least dangerous to most dangerous? Also an informational dossier about each one's hunting habits, favored prey, behaviour, hide thickness, and etc. Any information helpful to King's hunt.

Only Carnotaurus, Carcharodontosaurus and Spinosaurus are currently canonically found in Old Tyrannia. Mostly because I only felt I needed one Tyrannosaur (T. rex) and one Allosaur (Carcharodontosaurus). Spinosaurus is highly endangered, but if you can acquire special Imperial permission you can hunt it. The following factfiles are in order of dangerousness, as requested.

Carcharodontosaurus

Third largest predator in Old Tyrannia, 10m. Active carnivore, mainly an ambush predator but capable of sprinting over short distances. Will very rarely become maneaters. Small arms but powerful jaws, adapted principally for cutting and slashing, not crushing like Tyrannosaurus. Larger individuals may require heavy weaponry to take down.

Spinosaurus

Largest predator in Old Tyrannia, 18m. Predominantly a piscivore (fish eater), but will take small dinosaurs or mammals as prey. Rarely attacks humans. Wades into shallow water and catches fish as a grizzly bear might. Slow moving, weak jaws, but large and possesses deadly claws. Largest individuals will shrug off most rifles or even machine guns; heavy weaponry is required to take down.

Carnotaurus

6m. Active and adaptable carnivore, preys on hadrosaurs and small dinosaurs. Have been known to become maneaters. Generally an ambush predator but capable of sprinting over short distances. Small arms like Tyrannosaurus but powerful jaws and deadly pair of horns above the eyes. Can be taken down by small arms.

If you need any more information feel free to ask.

How thick is the average hide on these dino's? King is thinking he might need to use his .600 Overkill Nitro Express Elephant Rifle, but if the hide is thinner than what he expects, he'd be able to use a smaller cartridge.

Does that seem excessive? Keep in mind that unlike about 60% of the RPers on this forum, I'm not a self-made expert on modern warfare. As such I'm liable to make amateurish mistakes and am quite grateful when people point them out, providing they do so in a polite manner. However, please note that I tend to justify having a great deal of armour and equipment by the fact that my nation actually has a fairly small-ish military in terms of the percentage of my population serving in the armed forces, and as such I can afford to spend lots of money that might otherwise be used up training, arming, feeding, clothing, accomodating and paying the huge numbers of conscripts many nations like to throw at their enemies.

Also, it takes a pretty big military to protect a colonial empire of thirty billion five hundred thirty-two million people, which is what most of those armoured vehicles are occupied with doing (well, most of those armoured vehicles which are currently deployed and not being kept in storage).

The history of Old Tyrannia, at least under its current name, is relatively short; despite its name, Old Tyrannia has not existed very long. However, the history of the region known as Tyrannia is far longer; going back almost three thousand years. The first settlers in Tyrannia settled around 2000 BC. They arrived in what is now known as New Imperial Tyrannia, and were thus likely of North American descent. The settlers were primitive tribespeople who lived in peace in the lush forests of New Imperial Tyrannia for hundreds of years. But around 1000 BC, some of them moved out into the more open spaces of what is now Old Tyrannia. Life here was more challenging; huge saurian predators such as Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus were the biggest threat; but smaller predators like lions and dromeosaurs were also a danger. They were forced to adapt to a more fiercesome world. The nomadic peoples eventually discovered agriculture, settling down and building walled cities and farms. Around 500 BC, over a hundred of these settlements existed. Tyrannian tribal chiefs, called yers, were elected by the small farming communities they governed, and some were able to extend their power over several such communities and form small kingdoms. The rulers of these small states were accorded the superior title of yerzhug. The religion of these peoples- a form of which is still practiced by the tribes living in New Imperial Tyrannia's jungles- focused around a benevolent sky goddess, identified with Juno and Nix by later Tyranno-Roman pagans, various nature spirits and a separate class of deity that presided over human activities and concepts like justice or love. The influence of this faith can still be seen in modern Tyrannian paganism.

In about 110 BC Roman settlers colonised the east coast of Tyrannia. They settled peacefully, oblivious to the prescence of the inlanders. It was only some time after arriving that the colonists encountered the natives. The tribal leaders' title was translated by the Romans as tyrannus, 'tyrant', then a simple title for an absolute, non-hereditary ruler and not yet having aquired its negative connotations. From this word came the name, 'Tyrannia'. In 62 BC, Gaius Julius Caeser led a campaign to annex the whole of Tyrannia. He succesfully conquered the people of Old Tyrannia and named the region of Nova Latium which the capital is situated in and was later named after, but was forced to return to Europe before his forces could move west into the Western region later known as New Imperial Tyrannia (which was always isolated from the East by the Cocoa Desert). Old Tyrannia was named Provinca Tyrannia. Tyrannia was ruled as an imperial province, under direct authority of the Roman Emperor (rather than the Senate), represented by the legatus Augusti pro praetore, or governor. Diocletian's reforms saw Tyrannia become the Diocese of Tyrannia, under the Praetorian Prefecture of Gaul. In the later Roman period, it was reclassified as a separate prefecture, under its own praetorian prefect. In this period it was subdivided into several dioceses, which in turn were divided into smaller provinces.

Tyrannia escaped barbarian invasion during the break-up of the Western Roman Empire, and received an influx of refugees from the unstable mainland. Increasingly independant of the collapsing mainland, the governors (by now hereditary) of the province abandoned the title of "prefect" and adopted the title of prorex, or "viceroy", which allowed them the same degree of power in Tyrannia as the Emperor himself wielded in Europe (or theoretically held). Tyrannia remained under Roman rule until 500 AD (according to traditional accounts), when, following the fall of the Empire in Europe, Governor Regallius Maximus declared Tyrannia to be an independant state and assumed all imperial titles; it became what was later known as the Imperial State of Tyrannia, with Regallius as the Emperor Gaius Regallius Maximus I. Tyrannia had remained loyal to Rome right up until news of the last Roman Emperor's death in 476 AD reached the provinicial and later Imperial capital of Nova Latium City. Regarding itself as the last bastion of Roman civilization in the West and therefore the succesor to the Western Roman Empire, the new state sent a message to the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Emperor requesting recognition while hailing the ruler of Constantinople as augustus, or "senior emperor". Needless to say, the Empire rejected outright the establishment of the so-called "Holy Roman Empire" in Europe, seeing it as an upstart and continuing to see itself as the succesor to Rome.

Archaeological vidence shows that by 800 AD Tyrannians had reached North America and indeed probably knew the American coastline better than they did the unexplored interior of their own homeland, with one Tyrannian Emperor, Spurius Regallius Maximus II Obciduanus, having reportedly founded the Tyrannian colony of Obciduana there in 826. Obciduana was previously thought to have been the New Imperial Tyrannian island of Orca off the southern coast, but new evidence shows it may in fact have been somewhere in North America. Obciduanus' honorific agnomen was awarded for his great victory against the 'Obciduan tyrants (chiefs)' in 829, suggesting that Tyrannia may have fought a series of wars against the native Americans at this time. It is recorded that famine and attacks by the 'Obciduan savages' forced the Tyrannians to abandon their colony by about 878, and more precise records of its location were largely lost in a series of fires between 900 AD and 1000 AD, so Tyrannian knowledge of North America was lost; indeed, in the 12th century AD famous Tyrannian writer Blaesus wrote, "if the land of Obciduana truly existed, the most likely location would be the land of Viridia Major (Greenland) in the North... The existence of a fabled land in the far West seems nonsense, and the Obciduan [people] may have been Norsemen as it is well documented that the Scandinavians had already colonized that island by the time Obcidua was colonized."

Over the course of the first millenium, the centralized, provincial system of government was undermined by weak Emperors and infighting. Subsequently, the governors of the provinces became hereditary, and began to resemble the nobility of continental Europe; Tyrannia was slipping into feudalism. This transition was completed when, in 870, the reigning Emperor reorganized the Tyrannian state along the lines of the European feudal system, in attempt to restore order and strengthen the central authority of the Imperial Court. Around this time, the basic hierarchy of the Tyrannian nobility- princeps nobilis (prince), dux (duke), comes (count), vicecomes (viscount), baro (baron)- was established; later additions such as Archidux (archduke), magnus dux (grand duke) and marchis (marquess) occured from the 16th century onwards, mainly under the Romula dynasty. As was the case in Rome, the Tyrannian Emperor possessed several offices that collectively granted him imperial power; caesar, augustus, rex tyranniae, pontifex maximus, princeps civitatem and imperator maximus were among these. "Imperator" became the standard title of the Tyrannian Emperor only under the House Romula, when it was decided that a single overarching title was needed.

In the aftermath of these reforms and the consolidation of Imperial power, Tyrannia entered a period of rapid expansion that lasted until 1000 AD, and became the Tyrannian Empire. This lasted for many years, and by the year 1500 was the world's foremost superpower. At this time (around 1502), the last Emperor of the Regallia dynasty, Emperor Gaius Regallius Maximus Constantinos II, usually referred to as Constantine II of Tyrannia for simplicity's sake, broke with tradition by marrying a wife of Germanic descent, Empress Matilda of Tyrannia. When he died in 1526, his son, also Gaius Regallius Maximus Constantinos, was denied the throne by the then Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, Imperiosus VI, who instead gave it to the then Archduke of Hiera, Marcus Romulus Lanatus, who became Marcus Romulus I. This triggered a civil war that lasted twelve years between the Romulanists and the Regallianists, and ended in victory for the Romulus dynasty; Matilda, Empress of Tyrannia, was executed on the 18th February, 1539, and Constantinos followed her on the 5th March.

Though it arguably dominated the medieval world of the North Atlantic despite its policy of non-interference in European affairs, the Tyrannian Empire declined in importance from c.1550 onwards; nonetheless, it was among the largest empires in the known world until colonial expansion by Europe beginning in 1521 left it dead in its tracks (along with other ancient powers such as China and the Ottoman Empire, both of which enjoyed good relations with the Empire), as the European powers carved out great overseas territories while Tyrannia became increasingly isolationist and stagnant. By this point, it had grown to cover the entire Tyrannian continent and annexed New Imperial Tyrannia, called in Tyrannic Latin Imperium Tyranniae Novae. Joining the colonial game late, the Empire did make some territorial gains in Pacific; these colonies were united to form the Tyrannian Pacific Territory in 1706. But in general Tyrannian power continued to decline. Around 1806, the Imperial throne was passed to the Lepidean branch of the House Romula when the last Lanatean monarch, Empress Vibia II, the 'Stuttering Empress', died without an heir. She was replaced by Emperor Alexius Romulus Lepidus II, her cousin.

In 1890 AD, New Imperial Tyrannia rebelled against the Empire, splitting Tyrannia literally in two; this triggered the fall of the Old Empire, as many Tyrannian provinces broke off from the Empire, which officially renamed itself the Empire of Old Tyrannia to distinguish itself from the Armed Republic of New Imperial Tyrannia; ironically the Empire remained the more liberal of the two Tyrannian states. The island of Tyrannia was divided. The Armed Republic was governed by the Western Liberation Front as a single-party dictatorship, and was initially a very socialist regime, launching a 'cultural revolution' to eliminate Imperial culture from NIT and nationalizing major industries. In 1912, President Autronius Cethegus dissolved the WLF and proclaimed himself Dictator perpetuo, Dictator in Perpetuity, of the Armed Republic, thus reforming it from a single-party dictatorship to a fully autocratic state. Like Old Tyrannia, New Imperial Tyrannia slowly evolved into a Fascist state following the First World War.

Fascism emerged in Old Tyrannia during the 1920s-1940s, when it was sympathetic towards Italy and Germany during WW2. It never became directly involved. When the horror of the Holocaust became known, Nazism was outlawed in the Empire, after an energetic campaign by ethnic minorities and the more conservative and moralistic upper and middle classes. Many Nazis fled to the Empire to escape punishment in Europe, only to be burned at the stake. It should be noted that Tyrannia's leaders were perhaps more influenced by their belief that Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party were largely responsible for the collapse of Fascism in much of Europe than by any moral objections to the Holocaust, although they were undeniably shaken by it. The second Dictator of New Imperial Tyrannia, Sulpicius Lentulus, had no such qualms and openly mourned the collapse of the Nazi regime. He also won the enduring hatred of the Tyrannian Emperor for his eager support of the Republican Fascist Party in Italy when King Victor Emmanuel III removed Mussolini from power in 1943, while the Empire condemned the so-called Salò Republic and insisted that the King was perfectly justified in exercising his authority over the Fascist Party.

In 1955, the Cocoa Desert War was fought between the Imperial forces of Emperor Gaius Romulus III and Lentulus' son and succesor, Lucius Sulpicius Lentulus when the Armed Republic attempted to assert its claim to a disputed region along the Imperial-Armed Republic border. The Empire was victorious in the war, pushing back the republicans and forcing the Dictator to surrender the disputed territories. In 1982 Crown Prince Gaius Romulus Lepidus, then Archduke of Nova Latium, came to the throne as Gaius Romulus IV after the death of his father, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Gaius Romulus III. His Majesty is the 104th ruler of Old Tyrannia. The Emperor celebrated his Silver Jubilee in 2007. He remains in good health and is popular with his people, consistently receiving approval rates of between 80% and 98%. Despite this the Emperor's reign has seen the rise of the first real republican movement, made up largely of young people influenced by Western media and ideals such as democracy, liberty and equality. The Emperor has been much more lenient than his predeccesors towards such movements, and both the Republican Party and Communist Party are legal in Old Tyrannia. The Emperor appears confident that such parties will never gain majority support.

In early 2009, New Imperial Tyrannia once again became part of Old Tyrannia after economic failure, brought on largely by Decimus Coelius Calidus, the fifth Dictator's rash and ill-conceived warmongering against Leftist foes such as Seculartopia and Sebastianalandia, forced the Dictator to seek the Emperor's aid. It was the Emperor's price for such aid that the New Tyrannian monarchy was restored and New Imperial Tyrannia was re-assimilated into the Tyrannian Empire. Spurred on by the resulting economic boom as Tyrannian companies invested in New Imperial Tyrannia's untapped resources, the Empire subsequently entered a new expansionist stage. It has been involved in several wars recently as part of its strategy to reclaim its status as a world power, the most notable of which were the Serpent War (fought between the Cobra Alliance and a loose coalition of other powers, ended in peace treaty), the Venezuean War (lost to the Communist state of Martilia, a loss usually blamed on the Empire's Imerian 'allies') and the Plains Nation War (stalemate following the intervention of Rithian. The Empire rather melodramatically considers the international community's opposition to Tyrannian peacekeeping efforts during this war to be the greatest betrayl in Tyrannian history).

Government & Politics

"The Tyrannian Empire is ruled by an Emperor. Regardless of the dominant ideology, this has never changed and likely never will."
- Jacopo Morosini,
"Old Tyrannia: A Venetian's Guide To The Mother Country"

The Grand Fascist Empire of Old Tyrannia is officially an Executive Constitutional Monarchy and a Multiparty Parliamentary Democracy. However, in reality the Imperial Parliment has little power, with the de facto leader being Emperor Gaius Romulus IV. The Imperial Parliament was formed in 1859 and was based on the Westminster system. The upper house was originally composed entirely of hereditary nobles, and known in Tyrannia as the Concilium Nobilis. The lower house was elected and known as the Concilium Plebis. The 1896 Meritocracy Act, however, drastically decreased the size of the Imperial nobility and also introduced to convention of having two thirds of the upper house being appointed by the Emperor, with only a third remaining hereditary. This greatly increased the power of the Emperor. All legislature must be approved by the upper house before being passed to the Emperor. In English, the upper house (which retains the name Concilium Nobilis) is usually translated as the "House of Nobles," with the lower house being translated variously as "House of Commons," "House of Plebeians" and "House of Represenatives". The Government's preferred translation is the latter.

The Emperor of Old Tyrannia is formally styled in English as "His Imperial Majesty [X], in Christ the God faithful Emperor and Autocrat of Old Tyrannia and its assorted dominions and territories." The Emperor also holds additional titles such as "King of Northern Venezue" and "Duke of Tyrannic Venezia" as well as any titles he has acquired from other rulers or given himself. In Latin, the Emperor is styled "Imperator Caesar [X] Augustus" and Imperator is the formal title of the Tyrannian Emperor in Latin. "Imperator" was originally an honorary title belonging to the Commander-in-Chief of the Tyrannian Army. In Ancient Rome, it was one of the titles held by the Emperor and was originally a title granted to a military commander after a great victory. It was the source of the word "Emperor" and later was used as a translation of that title into Latin. The Tyrannians never used it as such, and had no one title equivalent to "Emperor," like the Romans, until Emperor Marcus Romulus I standardized the title of the Emperor and established "Imperator" as the principal Imperial title, with "Caesar" and "Augustus," another Roman honorific meaning "Venerable" or "Majestic," as additional titles. "Augustus" can be considered equivalent to "His Majesty" in English as far as Tyrannian Imperial titles are concerned. The "in Christ the God faithful" part of the Emperor's title was adopted from the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire after the Tyrannian Emperors proclaimed themselves the Byzantine Emperor's rightful succesors in the 15th century.

The Head of Government is the Prime Minister, Caput imperii or literally "Head of the Empire" in Latin, who is the leader of the party with a majority of seats in the House of Represenatives and is responsible for appointing the Cabinet or Council of Ministers (Concilium ministrorum). The current Prime Minister is Vitaeus Veturius Cicurinus Asinianus, leader of the Imperial Fascist Party which supports a pro-monarchy and non-racist version of Fascism. The leader of the opposition at present, Gaius Vitellius Longus, heads the Democratic Party, which aims to decrease the power of the Emperor and, like the more extremist Republican Party, has roots in the old Democratic Republican Party. They have had little success due to the power of veto given to the Emperor by the Imperial Constitution. In the past their primary rival was the Monarchist Party, which had ruled for over 100 years before its defeat in the 2009 elections, after which they disintegrated into various smaller parties. A further major change in Tyrannian party politics came about after the February 2012 elections, after which no one party acquired a majority vote. As a result the parties organized themselves into three electoral coalitions- the National-Democratic Bloc, the Fascist-Monarchist Bloc and the Social-Liberal Bloc. Tyrannia's recognised political parties are listed below, according to the bloc to which they belong:

The Empire is officially a Fascist state, though the 1896 Meritocracy Act, which is still technically valid having never been withdrawn, proclaims the Empire to be a 'Meritocratic Imperial Monarchy' despite this being an oxymoron. Fascism gained a foothold in the 1900s, due to the then-Emperor's fear of Communist expansion, following the execution of his fellow Monarch in Russia. At the core of the Tyrannian political system is the outdated concept of honour, that evolved from medieval chivalry in the 19th century as a visible distinguishment between the Empire and the 'barbarian' world. It has since become the ends as well as the means and honour is the main drive of the 21st century Tyrannian Empire. Honour frequently overrides realpolitik and ideological belief in the Empire's foreign affairs.

Tyrannian colonies are ruled by a governor or propraetor. Since the beginning of the 20th century, most of the Empire's colonies have began to push for greater and greater independance; this has lead to the adoption of the British system of dominions, or self-governing states. The title of prorex (governor-general or viceroy in English) is granted to the appointed governor of these states, which also possess their own Tyrannian Orthodox bishop and elected parliament, and even an elected caput dominionii ("Head of the Domion"/Prime Minister) in some cases. Over half of the Tyrannian Empire are now dominions. In special cases, a governor militant or legatus propraetor is appointed; this is generally in newly acquired, rebellious or highly militarized colonies, such as Tyrannic Zuye and Orca Island. Another special case is Venezia, where the Emperor's official title is Dux venetii or Duke of Venice, and so the governor is styled produx. The King of Imeriata is also regarded as holding the Imperial title of prorex- as well as dux- in his role as Duke of Northern Venezue. Old Tyrannia itself is subdivided into a number of "home provinces" administered by a proconsul, a system established during the reforms of the Imperial government in the 19th century. Local government beneath the proconsular level differs across Tyrannia.

The Committee of Public Security and Harmony (Commissionibus Securitas et Concordia Publica, CSCP) is the Empire's secret police and internal counter-intelligence agency (foreign intelligence is dealt with by the Strategic Information Committee (Commissionibus Opportuna Notitia, CON)). Whereas the CON reports to the Minister of Defence, the CSCP reports to the Secretary of Public Security and Harmony, who in turn reports to the Prime Minister and Emperor. The activities of the CSCP include gathering intelligence about potential threats to the State, quietly eliminating such threats and protecting the Empire against foreign spies and infiltrators. The Imperial Romulan Order (Ordo Romulanus Imperialis, ORI) is a third intelligence agency that is answerable only to the Emperor himself and concerns itself primarily with monitoring the CSCP and the Imperial Government. It is responsible for ensuring the loyalty of the Government, including the Council of Ministers and Imperial Parliament, to the Emperor. It is thus a top secret organization and its members are known only to each other and several important members of the Imperial family.
