I was reading through that over on Luft '46. Would it be feasible to add some ball turrets? Or would that increase drag?

Adding any sort of extrusion from the hull (ball turret or not) would create a wider surface for air to hit as the planes in flight. I am sure you could add them, I also dont think the drag would be increased to a point of not flying.
Just a average person! Is that too straight forward?

Maybe a rearward-facing ball turret like on the Tu-22M3 and the Il-76?

I honestly had no idea that Il-76s carried rear guns until one was shot down over East Ukraine.

Ostensibly Ukraine carried out training but a few weeks prior to that in which the guns were used. This was as part of the nation's push to train their pilots for ground attack missions from all platforms.

Yes, Il-76 too.

Yes, Il-76 too.

Not enough Il-102s?

What fighter-bomber aircraft had a 23mm rear gun like the '102? I can no longer remember, it's what I was referencing.

I don't recall any others, besides the Il-40, but that was just a prototype. Maybe some of the variants of the Flashlight and the Mandrake?

Podang (Tiger Paw) 1

Specifications:
- Designed: 1994-1997
- In Service: 1999

- Length: 2.85 meters
- Diameter: 0.32 meters
- Wingspan: 0.76 meters
- Weight: 263 kg
- Warhead: 63 kg HEAT
- Guidance: Imaging Infrared (IIR) on -A model, Semi-Active Laser Homing on -Ch model

- Engine: Fixed thrust solid fuel rocket
- Speed: 1,285 km/h
- Operational Range: 4-16 km

Overview:

Conceived in response to the same "closing the gap" programme that spawned the successful Su'Chong-6 Main Battle Tank, the Podang-1 was intended to improve the Soodean Imperial Air Force's ability to deal with advanced enemy armor. Specifically, it was drawn up in response to a requirement for a fire-and-forget anti-tank munition which would allow SIAF ground-attack aircraft to kill hostile tanks without flying into the range of hostile air defenses.

In order to save time and meet their ambitious deadlines, the designers built a missile that was essentially a miniaturized version of the Kh-29D. This allowed the project to reach completion ahead of schedule, but also introduced several flaws that would accompany it to its grave. Most notably, the need for a smaller IIR seeker head combined with less-than-state-of-the-art electronics brought about a significant reduction in effective range and accuracy. The first live tests were conducted in 1998, and in spite of reservations about the underperforming seeker, High Command accepted the missile into low-rate production.

Future combat use during the Themiclesian War confirmed that the seeker was not sufficiently accurate, with troops complaining that the effective range under battlefield conditions was often well below the claimed 16 kilometers. In response to this poor performance, High Command froze the production of Podang-1s in 2005, instead turning its attention to a "fresh start" project. All told, the PD-1 was not particularly successful in itself, but it was undoubtedly significant in that its design and improvement paved the way for future advances in fire-and-forget munitions design in the decade that followed.

All aircraft operated by the Makmur Island Defence Force fall under the control of the Makmur Island Aviation Regiment. This force is relatively small in size and lacks a significant combat capability, but is suitable for the needs of the Makmur government. Five main aircraft types are currently in service. The PAC CT/4E Airtrainer is used to train pilots who will later fly other aircraft. The Breguet Atlantic is used for maritime reconnaissance and often participates in search and rescue missions at sea. The Transall C-160 is used to transport supplies, troops and equipment where they are needed. The SH-2G Super Seasprite operates from the MIDF’s small fleet of corvettes. Finally, the AS 330 Puma is used to transport and supply ground troops.

The Kaman SH-2 Seasprite, and moreover its successor, the SH-2G Super Seasprite, are super undervalued and underused. Stick some longer weapons pylons on there and you've got yourself a great little shipboard chopper for ASW and general duties.

Reliability and redundancy. This thing WILL get shot at from the ground, and those two engines means that you don't lose ALL power when one gets shot out. Same reason why combat aircraft have several duplicate systems.

Question: what changes need to be made to change a regular land-based aircraft to a naval fighter? I'd like to, if possible, use an aircraft that is built primarily for land-based operations, but can land on carriers if need be. The idea is that I could have jets that are able to operate from allied nations' carriers if need be, since my own navy is particularly lacking (since I only border the Baltic sea, so I only need to control that to secure my shores. Thus, no carriers), without having to build a specialized fighter for that role, since that would likely be impractical for a nation like mine.

Random question time. We know that the Swiss make the best watches, knifes, rifles and tanks. But did Switzerland ever actually design a single military aircraft?
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.
