IIRC the primary reason the US Navy turned it down was because of cronyism and the DoD's fetish for funding projects it'll never use the decision that they should stay with, and expand, the F-18 fleet. The ASF-14 has almost nothing in common with the original F-14 but appearance, and had it been accepted, it'd be a new-build aircraft instead of using the old F-14 frames. Does anyone have any particular knowledge on it?

Additionally, we augment these with the swing-wing variant of the F-22 made in the Naval Advanced Tactical Fighter project, which was the same project that spawned the ASF-14.

On the airships question, US Army Intelligence (35M, I believe) is currently using small blimps for SIGINT (with USAF MC-12s), and as a camera platform.

They're all conflicting as to which exact variants had which exact features, though.

I personally use an upengined F-14 with built-in IRST and FLIR plus derivative of the AN/APG-71 (multimode with ground attack, AESA) as my sole carrier-based fighter.
