It's not that the Thunderbolt was superior, it was how it was superior. That was thanks to the radial engine it had been given and nearly designed around, an engine that could keep the thing flyingwith most of the cylinders shot outbecause it was air-cooled and wasn't as fragile as other liquid-cooled engines of the period..
