Pretty much. It's becoming more popular among both LEO's and CCW holders.
It's pretty sad, when I see beat cops carrying more personal firepower then what I carried on a daily basis in downtown Baghdad.

The cops here started carrying a second duty pistol about a year ago, cause apparently, fuck reloading.
And no, this does not count as the backup they already carry in a pocket or ankle holster.

Well, outside of North Minneapolis, we don't see a whole lot of violent crime around here. Mostly just the occasional inept mugging or botched armed robbery.

Missiles don't have those problems and they are longer ranged. That being said, I don't think you could carry a vast amount of Missiles on board your ship with warheads that big enough to do a decent amount of damage. Lasers would hit instantly but would need a lot of energy and battery. This would force the ship to be massive just for one laser.
The modern world disagrees with you, and find that you can carry more than enough AShMs that can kill ships. Cannons are far too short ranged compared to missiles, but longer ranged (although less accurate) than lasers.
Lasers, well, I'm not big on Longsword sized ships whose main weapon only has a range of twenty kilometres or so.

Around here, wild animals are more of a threat then people are, thanks to the Government reintroducing Wolves and driving all the furry critters out of the mountains and into the streets.

But for the missiles you need the fuel for them as well. Thats another possible explosion waiting to happen. Where as cannon shells work similar, not the same, to your basic firearm.

The most heavily armed cop I ever saw was carrying some automatic pistol. I think the SMG was in the car. <.< >.>
