Any reason why I shouldn't go and replace x39 AKs with x51 ones, or at least a derived one? I think it'd only be a ~2.5kg difference with a 210-220 standard load, vs the stamped AK mags I'd be using during the time period. I could make that even less if I went from wood to composite furniture too. Obviously that makes the fabled 45 pound infantry load a bit out of reach, but I think the weight would better be found elsewhere and can be left in the transport. I mean, it'd be a bit more difficult of a decision if I was coming from 5.56 or 5.45, but since 7.62x39 is already halfway between 5.56 and x51 in weight, I almost feel like I should just take the plunge and go all in.

Oh yeah, in before more Rhodie FAL and shorts.

I would stick with x39.

The extra power isn't worth the extra weight and bulk IMO. Your trops probably won't be shooting beyond 300 meters, and when they will the bullet will still hit quite hard at extended ranges, more so than the 5.56.

Be better off using either the SVD or a purpose built 7.62 NATO platform, tbh.

The Vepr in 7.62 NATO weighs under 9lbs. unloaded.

I figured as much, which is why I added the or derived one part (purpose built)

@Nua
ewww

@Spree
Doesn't the Vepr also have an RPK receiver and a pretty thick barrel? The AK I'd be using at the time (similar to the original Type 56) is already darn close to 9 pounds.

How did 5.56 perform in thick jungle anyways? And how 5.45 would theoretically? Not terminally because I know that's fine, but with brush, logs, etc.

"Traditionally" motorized were typically given trucks/APCs whilst mechanized got IFVs.

The Type-56 is heavily RPK-based, anyway. Rivet pattern and barrel thickness would be the similar if not the same as the RPK. Unless you're building off of a milled receiver, I really don't see how you could make a notVepr that's heavier than a Vepr.

In a jungle, you'd probably want 7.62x39mm or at least a solid-core 5.45x39mm load. The 7N6 is unstable enough that I feel like much brush would greatly deteriorate its accuracy due to deflection.

Basic difference:
Motorized - uses trucks, HMMVs, MARPS and other light mobility vehicle
Mechanized - uses heavier IFVs or APCs for combat

Sorta kinda. The first Valmets and the Galil (and the deal in your photo) all used milled receivers, so they were more based on the AK than on the AKM, at least as far as production itself goes. Internals are nearly identical, but the Valmet did introduce some interesting changes to the design, I will give it that. The magazine release being one of my favorite, if only for the fact it's a bit of a novelty. Only problem there is I can't remember if I was handling an Rk 62 clone or an M76 clone when I noticed it first. One of the owners of that gun store I worked for had one of basically every Valmet variant ever imported to the United States. Very cool collection.
