Honestly I think the ultimate space weapon would be some sort of repeating air rifle. You don't need that much force from your shots because you don't need to incapacitate your opponent, just rip his clothes. Every tear is an immediate casualty. An air rifle meanwhile would have many advantages. Since there is no ejection system at all there is absolutely no way for any dirt to get into the weapon aside of the muzzle. And the muzzle can be really small.

Martian dust is a fine as shit, everywhere, and a good part of it is always airborne. No conventional firearm would stand a chance.

You'd need to clean, and maybe repair the weapon every few shots.

I bet the AK and other weapons built with similar design requirements would work quite well.

It'd be peculiar, certainly.
One-third Earth gravity. Maybe you wouldn't feel as braced in your stance, or something. But recoil is mostly momentum which depends on mass, not weight, so meh.

Offset sights aren't a big deal.

Weapon height would be the same, regardless if it was bottom feeding or top feeding.

The only reason that would matter I s if you're sniping or MGing. It's a no-no for snipers because scope, and MGs should be belt fed anyway.

The only reason that would matter I s if you're sniping or MGing. It's a no-no for snipers because scope, and MGs should be belt fed anyway.

Interestingly, the standard British sniper scope for some 50 years was designed for the Bren.
