Almost all infantry engagements (with the exception of weird places like Afghanistan where the terrain is wacky) occur at or under ~300 meters. At that range, there's no need for a heavy cartridge. 5.56, 7.62 ComBloc, 5.45 ComBloc, etc. are perfectly suited for engagements at that range, and allow more ammunition to be carried, both in a magazine and on a soldier's person, for less weight, as well as making fully automatic fire practical. You can (and should) issue high-powered GPMGs and DMRs, but as a general service cartridge, the 7.62 NATO and it's ilk are obsolete.

That's not strictly true.
Obviously the 7.62 cartridge is heavier and generates a more severe impulse than 5.56, but I'm unconvinced by your liberal application of the word "excessive".

Excessive just means more than is necessary or practical for the application. It's excessive to taze a fly, but tasers are not generally considered excessive.

I've fired a 7.62 FAL on full automatic. It was fun, but I definitely wouldn't want to do it in combat, for an extended period of time. Even on semi auto, I wouldn't want to fire that thing over the course of a long battle. And you're never going to need that much power, except in very extreme circumstances, and when you're going to need it, your squaddies with the DMR and MG can take care of it. It's like carting about an easy-bake oven because you don't like using the cooking pouch to prepare MREs.

You can bitch all you like about the US Army acquisitions process, but the M14 was a physically good rifle.
It's still used today for a reason.

Sure, but it was obsolete before it was introduce. Lee-Enfield's a good rifle too, but I wouldn't want to carry one on the modern battlefield.

It's still in use today because now that we have the fuckers, we might as well do something with them, and it's cheaper to just convert them to DMRs than to scrap them and acquire a new weapon.

Well it was replaced as the service rifle in 1957. Any idea when the Enfield was replaced? I can't find any definitive info on when exactly it was.

1954

1951. Then the EM2 was in service until 1954.

Wikipedia says the L42A1, a 7.62x51mm sniper variant of the Lee-Enfield, was used up into the 1980s.

I...think so?
Try rounding off all the sharp corners in the stock, removing that 'shelf' at the bottom in front of the magazine, and make the pistol grip slightly taller relative to butt height. A rule of thumb I think I remember seeing in previous threads was the pistol grip should roughly be about as tall as the butt.
There are a few more issues with the grip, such as the grip being 'cut away' at the trigger and the bit just behind the grip being low enough that it look like it would interfere with using the thumb to manipulate the fire selector.
The trigger being a solid piece of material, with the grip cut away as it currently is, does not look like it would function. Without knowing the scale, the trigger also looks like it is rather oversized.

Eww no. But it's the most perfectest gun for NS - excessively complicated and failure-prone action designed to reduce the least critical dimension.
Can you ask how the .45 version is coming along?

Kystlund wrote:I think I will just configure our M14's to bullpup due to it being the most coast effective solution I've seen.

Bullpup chassis' retail for ~$750-1300. That puts the cheapest models about a couple hundred dollars more than you can get M16s and M4s, and who knows how much you'd pay for something much cheaper like a modern production Leader Dynamics T2, AK, or Pindad SS-2. Granted, those chassis' aren't benefited from large scale production, but I doubt it'd end up less than a new production rifle, especially if you do a cost analysis of refurbing the rifles vs. buying an entirely new one.

Making sure you've made the proper adjustment of the gas system eliminates a lot of the felt recoil on the FAL, and I'm sure any halfway decent brake could help, as well.

I would call the FALs recoil moderate at best. Its nothing out of the realm of comfort but its fallen out of favor because intermediates.

Calling it or the M14 stupid is baseless hate brought on by fanboy-ness, and is really rather annoying. Both are excellent rifles and are staples in the firearms world in both sides of the spectrum.
