It's pretty effective as is.
There are methods to harness beta-decays of reactors, but they're generally only possible for small applications, they're difficult, and you waste all of the fission-related energy, or you operate it subcritically; essentially not a good idea.

RTGs could be useful if you used one to power a single neighborhood at a time. You could bury it under 30 feet of concrete and never have to worry about it melting down or being stolen.

You could probably use a particularly powerful RTG to run an Xbox or a TV. Probably not both at the same time though. :(

Better use one of the derivatives with better energy output so you can turn on the AC while you're at it.

Edit: It has occurred to me that this is starting to look a lot like Fallout.

I don't think nuclear batteries heat fluid or gas.

that's probably because we never used nuclear batteries large enough for it to be worthwhile

Define worthwhile. They have specialist applications where other power sources aren't useful. Hence their wide use in the space programme.

The shuttle and ISS, as orbiting bodies, are able to utilise large solar arrays. They're not so useful for long-range satellites, exploratory drones or deep-sea systems.

I sometime think.. Whether it's possible to replace diesel generator for my sub with gas turbine. It can be way more compact than diesel generator.. Thus more space for Electrochemical Generator. Weight can also be freed for more Metal Hydrate tank to store hydrogen.

Some Russian sub i know have auxilliary gas turbine engine but this is a small scale. for auxilliary power only.

Curiosity (the mars rover) is powered by a nuclear battery, a thermal conversion one if I remember correctly. One of the engineers on it talked to my high school before the launch.

Which is where I'm coming from on this.
Other power sources that could have powered Curiosity, other Martian rovers, Voyager et al are probably not suitable for a variety of reasons.

That's broadly what one atomic battery mechanism is. The same p-n gap technology as used in solar panels, just that decay radiation instead of solar radiation is knocking electrons about.
