Also, it is kind of logical, as its a stretched limo version of one of the British Tanks in WWI. They weren't that far ahead.

Actualy the way you described them being deployed, with the 1,000 men guards and other supports along with the fact that it the late 1880s most armies won't have planes or rival tanks, along with the mere shock value of some mad scientist monstrosities rolling across the battlefield, along with relative certainities and dash of luck of facing a army that still holds to Napoleonic ideas of strategy and it could be extremely devastating.
