T-34 -> T-44 -> T-54

T-54 -> T-62 + T-64

T-62 + T-64 -> T-72 + T-80

T-72 -> T-90

T-80 -> T-84

T-84 > T-90

T-84 > T-34

ergo, GTFO

But we can't show pictures of it because Tim Allen is suing us

Hopefully next time you realize what /FT means. Basically, a tank that looks exactly like a Konigstiger, because, come on, that was one ultra-sexy tank.

Oh, and the same thing with the T-34. (I use T-34, Konigstiger, and Degman variants in my FT ground army; Leopard in my MT army; T-100 Ogre in my PMT army)

Radictistan wrote:T-80 has better electronics? I could have sworn I read somewhere that most T-80s can't even use their thermals and GLATGMs at the same time.

Nuh-uh. T-90 is better than the T-80, but there're two reasons for that; it has a 10 year electronics advantage, and doesn't have the faulty bits of technology (advanced electronics, gas turbine engine etc). However, if you look at the T-80 (T-80U etc) and its operational relationship with the T-72 (which it was designed to operate alongside thanks to the Uralvagonzavod/Leningrad-Kirov arrangement), the T-80 was, in fact, designed to be the superior of the two tanks, produced in smaller numbers whilst incorporating technology like GLATGMs, a gas turbine engine (a failed attempt to increase engine performance) and armour with more money put into it, something reflected in the higher unit cost of the T-80. Hence, at a basic level, the T-80 was designed to be better than the T-72 (I think). My guess is that post Cold-War Russia looked at the Western single all-purpose tank doctrine and the cost of utilising two separate tanks together and decided to go with the cheaper T-72 base while incorporating the T-80s better aspects; the T-80 was, after all, an outdated tank.

However, if you want to compare the T-72/T-90 line fairly with the T-80, you should compare it with the T-84 (which is, after all, the T-80s successor). Better armour (I would guess), longer range, better electronics (at least, in the case of units like the Oplot) seem to suggest that, in fact, the T-84 is better than the T-90; at a basic level, the T-80 was designed to survive and fight longer than the T-72, and I'd guess that further advancements would continue to reflect this.

For the sake of using ww2 era tanks as light tanks i give you:

M-51 "Super Sherman"
Image

Primary Armament: 4.5 inch/L44 Rifled Gun
Secondary Armament: 1 x.50 cal AA/AP Machine Gun
1x.30 cal Bow Machine Gun
Armor: 3 inches maximum. Plus NERA blocks can be added for increased survivability.
Engine: 650hp V-8 Turbo Diesel
Max Speed: 35 mph

French AMX-30 does 40mph. So why would you use a Sherman instead?

OOC-Mainly I like how it looks. Other than that, the only valid reason I can cite is that Shermans had a good reputation for mechanical reliability.

An M18 Hellcat will do 55mph. And knock out a very heavily-armoured tank.

Will never listen to this guy again.

With a competent WWII-era Soviet crew from one of the Shock Armies v. like...fucking Somalis in a Leclerc, the T-34 would win.

Just like an experienced crew from the SS Pzr. Div. Das Reich with a Panzer V Panther would beat an M1 Abrams with a crew composed of Nigerians.

Thought about using the M-18 Super Hellcat with a 90mm gun (or wank it slightly bigger), but didnt like the idea of an opened topped turret on the modern battlefield.

Why bother using a 'light tank' in the first place? French AMX-10RC does 85km/h with a 105mm L/48 gun. If you want recon elements in your armoured forces, just use wheeled vehicles.

I do just that, mainly using BTR based APC. (See my factbook in sig.) I just noticed the trend in the last few pages of using older tanks (i.e T-34) and wanted to bandwagon a little. That, and I am considering RPing my Army as being a little more out dated in equipment due to funding issues in some future RPs. So...i was just floating the Super Sherman idea out there, along with the idea of issuing Hellcats to my colonial forces.

Yuh, but that's too old, even for an impoverished army.

It amazes me that the Israelis were able to put even a cutdown 105mm gun in a Sherman turret. I feel sorry for the guys who had to fit inside.
