given the impetus it has how long would 5.56X45 continue to be the most pervasive intermediate cartridge in NATO militaries? now change that and assume that following 1997 the Black Hand begins it's first prototype field tests of the First generation of powered armor deploying a single fireteam per division. the armor in question merely served as a manner to allow the soldier a level NBC protection a constant link to communications and computrised control and most importantly keep the wearer comfortable and somewhat protected. as such full gear was worn underneath the suit and the suit itself was layered with kevlar providing a level I-II protection dependent on range.

Any guesses as to how long NATO would hang onto 5.56 and what it would change to?

It would probably be some backwater military trial that wasn't going anywhere that was forced to take a whole new direction and ended up inventing "the best cartridge ever made"

Figure that 5.56mm NATO is best for what it was designed to do and also that no one has yet presented a threat enough to require negating the round for something better or switching back to 7.62mm NATO for mainline use.

Pretty much. For me though its still the combo of the eyes and the mouth that do it.

They're ordered chronologically by time of first use, starting top left going counter-clockwise.

1: APR-78. 10x25 Benomian (.45 ACP necked down). Select-fire, threaded barrel, etc. Guttersnipe sights.
2: APR-78B. 11x23 Low (10x25 necked up and shortened. subsonic.). Threaded barrel (always issued w/suppressor), select fire, etc. Guttersnipe sights.
3: APR-86C. 10x25 Benomian. Shorter barrel, concealed hammer, no threaded barrel. Designed for concealment. Guttersnipe sights.
4: APRM. .45 Nuo. Select-fire, threaded barrel, etc. Guttersnipe sights. Polymer grips and rails. Has side-mounted attachment point for stock.
5: APR-13. 7.62x25mm Tokarev +P+. Altered slide to promote barrel cooling. PCAPs on top and bottom. Select-fire, threaded barrel, etc. Also has grip PCAP for attaching stocks. Fixed sights.
