Why let the enemy use your ammo?

Not to mention that it's very possible the "enemy" doesn't have any adequate ammunition to use.

Say an enemy force captures your ammo dump and they figures out that their weapons fire the same cartridge.
They aren't going to blow the dump and waste all that, right?

because you need to shoot the enemy dead before you can take his ammo? Plsu he will be using up his ammo as quickly as you are so by the time you kill him there isn't leikly going to be enough left to resupply you.

Really for anyone but the msot suepr special behind the lines types ammo commonality with the enemy simply isn't a factor, some tiems it occurs as a happy accident, because a type of ammo is already wide spread, comercially availble and pretty much the best tool for the job at the time (basically the case with british use of 9x19mm, although of course the sten and the MP38/40 didn't just share ammo they could share mags aswell, mainly because they both copied the same earlier magazine design and annecdoatally this lead to lots of tommys ditching thier stens for MP38/40s in the western desert) or because thats what your chosen machien guns came chambered in (the RAC and its 7.92x57mm Besas)

You must remember the sten came about during a time when britan freaked out about invasion by Germany (the Brits have an entirely unrelated invasion fetish) so using your enemies ammunition which is something you already use (the Brits had hi-power pistols) and have no SMG of their own and their only native pistol cartirsge at the time being .455 Webley it was more then reasonable it was easily the only logical thing to Do.

I find it funny that here an argument for retaining 7.62x39 is "so we can resupply from fallen Russians", and I guess that even those Russian troops stationed on Finno-Russian border probably have AK-74s or newer.

I always did wonder why Finland kept the 7.62x39 past the Cold War. Not that there's anything wrong with the cartridge, of course, but it just made me kinda curious as to why they didn't shift towards an intermediate.

Because at a certain point when your enemy learns this, he might place of predeaded people with sabotaged ammunition (welding or smth like that rounds in cases so they go boom instead of bang), stuff like that.

The real reason is it's too baller of a cartridge to drop.

And also because looting a corpse IRL takes a long time.
Not like in Fallout or Skyrim, where you press the A button or E key, press the X button or A key and run away.
You have to search the body for ammunition.
The magazine/clip has to be compatible with your weapon.
If it isn't, you have to put each round into your magazine or clip.
By that time, you'll be dead.

A nice way to do it would be like the Russians in WWII. Build a gun that can fire your enemies' ammunition, but they can't fire yours.
7.63x25mm Mauser can be safely fired in a 7.62x25mm Tokarev weapon, but not the other way around.

in addition to this, they might not have anything on them, but maybe webbing and a uniform, so when you go to look over the body, you move it in the wrong direction and boom ur ded because they put a tamper-proof bomb on it.

Though, there are ways you can negate that.

They still do that with their mortars, I believe; I heard they chose 81mm as their standard mortar calibre after NATO/the US (can't remember which atm) standardised 80mm.

Russian/Soviet light mortar caliber is 82,,.
"commoner" caliber in "west" for light mortars is 81mm

as it was stated previously,

you can fire an 81mm out of a 82mm tube.
