7.7x58 is not underpowered by any definition, unless you're comparing it to the PTRD or something.

And by modern standards? That type 100 had the same cartridge did it?

I prefer a rifle then a spear that just so happens to be a under powered rifle.

I'd say the Arisaka's widely-accepted unbreakability more than makes up for it being supposedly underpowered.

Everything was/will be considered weak if you take it out of context. Might as well say the Mosin-Nagant's too weak because in 1891 it was less powerful than an SVDK is now.

That type 100 had the same cartridge did it?

The SMG? No, of course not. The Type-100 fired a pistol cartridge.

I think he's referring to the Type-99 LMG, which did.

Also I'm fairly certain that if you give 7.7x58 some modern powder it'd outperform 7.62x51 NATO.

He might be refering to 6.5×50mmSR.
Although I've no experience if it's "underpowered" or not.

If I'm not mistaken 7.7x58 is very similar to .303, I know it could be fired from Lee Enfields at least.

US Marines and the Chinese would beg to differ that its underpowered.

7.7x58 and .303 are very similar to one another, yes.

Edit to add: 7.7x58 and 6.5 SR arent underpowered.

...well the sten and the MP40 were using the same exact cartridge (9x19 Parabellum) so that really isn't that surprising

Which I believe was on purpose. Why make your own ammo when you could burn through the enemies?

Which brings me the AK74 series. It fires the 5.56 NATO, right?

Whoops...wrong model. Sorry! :(

Or rather the new AK-12s. One variant, I believe fires the 5.56.

The AK-12 is all over the place in regards to caliber.

Also of note is the AK-101, AK-102, AK-108, and RPK-201, all of which fire 5.56x45mm NATO.
