Although I'm late to the party, my digging around in handgun data indicates that most nations would rather give more rifle ammo than issue a soldier a pistol. Based on this, should I replace tank troops' (pistol caliber) SMGs with short (10"-14" barrel, 24-28" OAL) standard-caliber rifles?
For example: Issue the M4A1 as a standard infantry rifle and the M4A1 CQBR as a tank troop rifle. (bonus parts interchangeability with that pair)

Something like that is probably for the best. You might want to issue something with a slightly longer barrel for your standard troops weapons, the M4s barrel is a bit short for the 5.56 to get its full power.

From what I've read though, the 5.7mm is already pushing the upper limits of what it's capable of, while the 4.6mm has more room to expand.

Our cops are armed where and when it's needed, they just don't routinely carry. When I went to London there were cops strolling around outside Parliament with MP5s. Semi-auto only versions, but still.

WHy would they need the ability to fire on full-auto? They're basically using it as an MP-5 with the added armour-piercing capacity because :NuclearWeapons:. The MP5 isn't used as an SMG, it's used as some kind of carbine in a pistol cartridge in semi-auto, because full-auto is too uncontrollable and isn't cut out for the role of police work.
