Barrel length, cartridge dimensions (see the above picture for a list of what dimensions I need), rifle weight, projectile design and pressure.

If 10-round magazines were easier to find, I'd be pushing the Daewoo K5 onto you. I don't think anyone makes current-production 10-round magazines for them, though. Another good 9mm handgun would be, as you mentioned, a Glock (even if I do dislike a fair number of their traits), my favorite (and only not-hated) model of which being the G19. Nothing wrong with a 9mm 1911, either, but I'm not familiar with what makers make the better ones. I know Colt makes one, and I believe Rock Island Armory does, as well. The CZ-75 and its variants are also awesome 9mm handguns, if you haven't taken a look at those yet.

I find myself wondering how things would change if you did the longer, more aerodynamic projectile instead.

The M&P9 from Smith & Wesson is a great piece. It's got a 1911 profile grip angle, but a much higher grip which really lets you control the recoil, and 3 interchangeable backstrap/palmswells which can tailor it to any hand included with every model. It's just as reliable as a Glock, just as accurate, has a better trigger (IMO) and looks a lot nicer. It's also fully ambidextrous, and can be had either with or without a manual safety. Jerry Miculek uses one as his 3-gun competition piece (albeit a 5in model with a trigger job and quadraporting), so you know it's good. And it's priced about the same as a Glock, if not cheaper.

400m shot with an M&P9 - Granted, Jerry Miculek is borderline super-human, but it's still a testament to the weapon itself

Honestly though, you should just go to a gun store, handle some pistols, and decide what you like. Pistols are very picky animals and what fits like a glove for one person might be the opposite for someone else.

Damn.

I'm rather shocked at what a colossal failure this round turned out to be. Admittedly I wasn't expecting gold, but damned if I wouldn't have been better off necking 7.62x39mm out to an 8mm bullet, or just ripping the 7.92x33mm Kurz wholesale.

Rock Island's .45ACP 1911s have been pretty great, as far as I know. The Colts are a bit more expensive because they put a little more work into them (parts mate up a bit tighter). Also worth remembering, RIA is a Philippines-based company, so their production costs are probably lower than other, US-based makers (same reason my High Standard 1911A1 was sub-$500.00: US company, but contracted a Filipino company to produce it). They take pride in their 1911s, though, so their quality is pretty darn good for the price.

Don't forget the Beretta 92FS. Very solid design, and if you're being issued one (are you still doing ROTC?), I suppose it wouldn't hurt having a handgun back home that you've trained on when on base (different pistol, same design: all your raining would carry over). Your commercial model would be better than what you're issued, likely.

I am thinking that as a valid option as well I honestly believe that the M9/92FS isn't that bad a pistol and it's still competitive around the $600 mark
as for ROTC....... I'm giving up on that I think (I haven't started as I was still under the maximum taken units). I'm probably just going to enlist US army Signal Corp. I'll talk to a recruiter seriously about both options. Entire thread's input welcome here cause I clearly have no clue what I'm doing.
