And the Germans bent a barrel 30 and the bullets came out in tiny pieces.

Well, it has to be a very delicately-made piece of equipment. The forces imposed by bullets travelling down a normal rifle barrel are already pretty worrying. Both the bullet and barrel, and also the actual design of the barrel, have to be very precise.

I thought that Krummlauf had worked.

"Another problem besides the short life-span was that the bending caused the bullets to shatter and exit the barrel in multiple fragments, producing an unintended shotgun effect. As a result, weapons designers experimented with small vent holes drilled into the Krummlauf's barrel in order to reduce pressure and recoil, allowing the discharged bullets' built-up gases to be released to slow the bullet's velocity as it turned to exit the barrel. Nevertheless, the Krummlauf's lifespan remained the same."

Completely replacing pistols as a sidearm. W/ giggle switch. IIRC - and correct me if I'm wrong - some RL countries have historically used machine pistols as their service sidearm, so there shouldn't be any problem with that. A RL B+T MP9 is 1.4 kg unloaded. IMO bulk-wise it's not much larger than a full sized pistol:

Riflemen wouldn't have them, so the reasoning behind it is that the guys that will would kind of rely on them as their primary weapon for short-range encounters (e.g. guys wielding grenade or rocket launchers, etc.) , so they'd really use something more than a pistol to rely on that is, however, still compact. Whereas with riflemen weight-wise 1.4 kg (unloaded MP9) will get you at least 2 extra rifle mags. Folding stock, big mags, better accuracy, higher power are some of the advantages.

Perhaps for soldiers relying on a pistol-caliber weapon as their sole / primary weapon I can have smth more "full-fledged" / SMG/carabine-ish like a MP5 in 7.62 Tok (e.g. CQB, vehicle crews, etc.) . Yeah, I probably will. Because MP5 s are fucking cool.

I need some help understanding trigger mechanisms. Basically I want to figure out how select fire weapons that use a striker work. And I am hitting a brick wall when it comes to finding good examples. There are plenty of brilliant drawings and videos of hammer fired weapons (like the AK) or of semi-auto only handguns that use a striker (like the Glock). But I can't find anything even half decent that describes a striker fired select fire weapon that fires from a closed bolt.

So any links would be appreciated.

Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

The above post contains hyperbole, metaphoric language, embellishment and exaggeration. It may also include badly translated figures of speech and misused idioms. Analyze accordingly.

One might make the argument that someone needing something more than a pistol could just use a carbine, while someone needing less would do fine with a pistol.

Your soldiers shouldn't rely on pistol caliber weapons bigger than a sidearm. Compact assault rifles are lightweight enough and don't fire ammo that is any heavier.

The MP9 is a decent sidearm, but It could be a little more compact. something like the CZ-75 Auto, lercker pistol, Skorpion or Beretta 93 Raffica would be a better choice IMO.
