But it's not match lit, and judging by the martini receiver it takes a cartridge, right?

Belt-fed, 7.92mm Mauser. Essentially a lightened Maxim gun, it weighed all of ten kilograms, unloaded.
Six pounds lighter than the Lewis and two pounds lighter than the Vickers-Berthier and just two pounds heavier than the Degtyaryov.

And people say history is boring, they're looking in the wrong place.

Look at this gun. Is nice gun.

No idea just yet. It will most likely be a slightly explosive shell.

The rail built into the receiver is raised slightly above standard.

That's just how Mauser barrels are. Even Mosin barrels taper (and by quite a bit), but the Mosin tapers gradually whereas Mauser barrels are "stepped."

https://www.apexgunparts.com/images/Bar ... Barrel.jpg

Note the four sections: chamber area, beginning of barrel, first taper step (about halfway between the two black spots), and the second taper that is harder to see: it is right before the black mark nearest the muzzle.

I'm sure you could. I'm not familiar enough with Mausers to know why exactly the barrel was stepped rather than continuously tapered. Not sure what the expenses are, one versus the other.

Cost vs. performance IIRC.

Edit because:

Looking through my photos last night, I found a few photos of US Special Forces operating in Vietnam with, strangely enough, MP-40s

If I find them again I'll post them here.

Interesting. Still, it's not surprising seeing as though it's one of the best sub machine gun ever made.

I think (and this is just a suggestion mind) that you might want to try a slightly larger difference between your shading colours. IMO what makes the line-only versions seem better is that sharp clarity on the angles. Once the angle lines are gone, you can't see the angle quite so clearly.

I mean, it's all still very good! Just a suggestion.
