Your Nation's government's greatest mistake?

Postby Lipnitia » Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:03 am

In 1977, the leader, Dobromir Ulov legalised small-scale fascism, which caused an uproar and led to the Bombing of the Matruka Tower in Winter 1977 by a neo-Nazi organisation. Dobromir Ulov resigned from leadership a year later, and he was replaced by Ivan Savka. The neo-Nazi group was arrested, the fascism prohibited, and the great nation before the incident came back, and the Martuka Tower was rebuilt. It was finished in 1983.

Throughout the mid-to-late 18th century, the government of the Kingdom of Breheim engaged in a systematic series of decrees that would eventually lead to the Republican Revolution. The laws considered the most serious was an increase in tax on agricultural products. As the nobility was exempt from taxation, this led to ever-increasing amounts of small-holding farmers going bankrupt, and being forced to sell their land to local aristocracy. Similarly, owning of slaves was banned for anyone without a title, leading non-noble farmers to be at a disadvantage compared to larger noble slave-holders. The system of things were further abolished in 1741 (in which landowning men had a vote in the running of their local area). In 1771, the crown further granted nobles the right to expropriate land which was in their jurisdiction, but not directly owned by them. This led to a slight increase in tenant farmers, but for the most part the recently landless farmers were forced into the cities to try to find work. The free farmers had formerly been one of the Crown's key supporters compared to the nobility, but in a misguided attempt to court favour with the nobility by increasing their own lands, the crown had completely alienated (and even nearly done away with by the time of the Revolution) this well-educated group of people.

Some speculate that the Revolution might have been averted, as republicanism itself was considered by many among the well-educated citizens and freemen to be a Cossackian ideal, if it weren't for the Crown's refusal to reduce tariffs on imported agricultural produce. During the 18th century, significant numbers of the landrich nobility had turned away from food production to cash crops. While there were several famines in the 18th century, by far the worst occurred in 1788-1791 in which an estimated fifty thousand people starved to death and revolutionary sentiment grew rapidly among both the urban poor, disenfranchised former farmers and tenant farmers.

Bombing one of its own cities with a Space WMD by accident.
The 'Thunder Rod' program involved launching tungsten rods mounted on spacecraft at ground targets to cause devastation and chaos, a prototype satellite was put in orbit carrying 3 prototype rods. However operators controlling the deployment of the rods had entered the wrong co-ordinates, rather than hitting the test site as intended, the rods veered into a populated agricultural town causing massive panic, widespread fires, destruction and chaos. 780 People died, 1404 life threatening injuries, 1082 injuries and countless other minor injuries as well as the destruction of farms and peoples homes.

The government attempted a cover up, the satellite was destroyed and all documents and plans relating to the Thunder Rod program were destroyed. Its a common talking point of our nation when it comes to conspiracies, some evidence even suggest it was intentional, or sabotage by shady rebel groups.
Yo, that's mad.

We had a really large disaster in 2255. What happened is that we had a giant mirror in a dark valley, but one day the sun was too bright and the forest went on fire. Almost the entire northwestern Soled burnt to the ground and 100,000 people lost their lives. The mirror concept was of course taken away.

When the civil war ended, the new socialist government completely banned private businesses. This crippled the Terravian economy and this mistake still hits the Terros hard.

In 2004, the Federal Council vetoed a bill passed by the Citizens' Assembly at 67%. The bill called for immediate continuation of the Voters' Union referendum power. The people of Lukquarel peacefully went insane, demanding the Citizens' Assembly revote soon and pass at 70%. The people also wanted a recall of all councilmen and women. Yet, it passed the CA at 68% again, finally giving it up to the Voters' Union to decide. Obviously, the Union passed the bill with 15% against.

Later, 9 of the 14 Federal Council members were not reelected after this drastic veto, and the CA passed the Council Vote Act at 89%, giving most legislative power back to the Assembly and Union like the constitution states.

The Monarchy's capitulation at the Concord of London in 1945. Despite the fact that it was most likely inevitable by the time that Felicia I joined the Axis in 1940, the second World War certainly boosted Transoxthraxian industry and put it at the top of the world for a small period of time in arms manufacturing. When the Concord of London was signed in '45, the Monarch had to abdicate in favour of a pro-American puppet which plunged Transoxthraxia into a 65-year dark period.
Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.
