Strange Laws of your nation

Postby Britannia I » Mon Nov 25, 2013 4:35 pm

For example In Britain it is actually illegal to eat mince pies at Christmas as decreed by Cromwell in the 16th Century. The law was never really updated and people just thought it was as silly as it sounds. Has your nation got any similar laws?

In Britannia it is illegal to spit on your own doorstep, this dates back to the old days when the monarch held unlimited power and owned every subjects house and spitting on your own doorstep would be considered as an insult to the Monarch who provided them with that house. People can still get fined up to £5 for doing it however.

It is illegal to sell a painting of someone without their written consent. The same is not true of photographs.

It is illegal to marry a person with the same first and last name. It is unclear why this law came to pass, but it is theorized that it was because someone had been issuing false marriage certificates with himself listed as both participants.

It is unlawful to lend a kettle to your neighbor on Friday.

It is unlawful to own cats numbering in threes.

Until recently It was against the law to claim ownership of a pond. They were counted as public property, and therefor their value was not added to the assets of private land. This caused many ponds to be drained in the country, leading to disastrous flooding once the land had been built upon.

In Marshill, calling someone a "Householder" can be considered slander. The correct term is "Stakeholder." This dates from the recent Householders' Revolt and is despite the fact that the Household is still the basic economic unit.

It is also illegal to molest the Marshill Wild Fox. During the Unsettled Times, the fox population proved useful as warnings against nocturnal brigandage; even though animals of almost every other species (with the notable exception of the national animal, the English Springer Spaniel) were freely hunted, trapped and bred for food, the Marshill Wild Fox enjoyed special protection. Offenses against the Fox are the only crimes, other than treason and sedition, punishable before the Executive Court, from which there is no appeal. Though rare, those found guilty of molesting foxes are sentenced to labor in the dye pits for periods between six months and three years.

It is illegal to carry a concealed weapon greater than 3 meters in length. (This came about owing to the invention of the stealth field generator)

It is illegal to shoot rabbits from the back of a moving streetcar. (This was because of a shooting accident 300 years ago)

It is illegal to herd more than 3000 cattle into the main marketplace of Niciae City at any given time. (The main marketplace of Niciae City used to have a cattle saleyard 200 years ago that had a capacity for 3000 cattle, the saleyards have since moved to a larger area on the outskirts of the city)

The strangest thing about laws in Stahn is that it doesn't really have any. We do have a police force and courts and all that but every Stahnese is expected to use their own judgement. Be they in law enforcement or not.

Judges are democratically elected by the people of a region.

In practise it doesn't appear very different to a real world nation.

In an aim to make the Asigna party infamous in the Philippines, the liberal party dressed as one of the Asigna party parliament members and wrote a bill. "Penalizing all citizens whose cars travel faster than the speed of light."

This bill has been locked up and blown up afterwards in a warehouse by the Asigna party members in their shame of being laughed and ridiculed by the people and the region.

possibly the strangest might be that the national level may make no law binding on the individual, other then to insure all individuals not serving punishments for having committed real crimes, have an absolute right to relocate from any place to any place. every other law of every kind, binding on individuals is a completely local option, at the discretion of the consensus within each and every neighborhood, village, and rural district.

this means, among other things, that you can almost always find someplace you'd be happier then where you are, and have an inalienable right to relocate yourself there. this would be meaningless of course, if transport were prohibitively costly, but here it is free.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

To crack down on religious observance, we made it illegal to enter a church building on Saturday or Sunday. To get around this, religious folk go to their church on Friday night, sleep there, and hold services on Saturday morning.

Within the Laurasian Empire, it is illegal to leave the presence of others without extending your blessings upon them. It is also illegal to make any jokes about religion. Also, no man is permitted to hold himself higher then a noble; if he is taller, he is required to crane his head down in a superior's presence.

In our second-largest city, Niyage, it is illegal to own both a female and a male tarantula at the same time without a special and expensive breeder's license due to one crazy fool breeding an army of large (but mostly harmless) spiders and unleashing them in the womens' changing room at the local gym. There was no precedent to this event, and no indication that such a thing would ever happen again, but the law was passed anyway. Many suspect that the Mayor of Niyage's daughter was among those terrorized by the arachnids, and pushed her father into signing the law.
