Quite so. An overwhelming majority of citizens are bilingual, the common instance being fluency in two or more tribal tongues.

Of course, as any man will tell you the army has a language of it's own:

"Troep! Ek gaan jou opvok! Ek sal in jou neusgat invlieg en op jou hart kak! Vir wie loer jy troep? Jy is laer as slangkak se skaduwee in die woestyn! Ek issie daai hoer by die huis nie! As ek jou opvok, gaan hulle my uit die army smyt. Ek sal dan vir jou by daardie hekkie wag, en jou weer opvok!"

Although the average Sidh doesn't have much use of foreign languages and universal translators are widely available, many choose to learn at least one nonetheless. Learning a language is a way of exercising the mind and improving oneself, which is what being a Sidh is all about.

Good command of at least one human language is a requirement in the Imperial military out of practical reasons, i.e., to be able to interrogate prisoners, read captured enemy documents and equipment manuals, and boss around conquered human civilians. This means that every Sidh who has earned full citizenship knows at least one human language. Skargh language is also an option, although difficult to learn without proper vocal augmentation - due to anatomical differences, a human or Sidh will find it nearly-impossible to pronounce Skargh words correctly.

Learning languages is considerably easier for a Sidh due to availability of linguistic neural softwares that "implant" knowledge of the language in one's mind on a subconscious level. Having a considerably higher intelligence than the average human, a Sidh will only have to hear and speak a word once or twice to memorize it and it's proper pronounciation. Proper mastery of a language still takes practice though - while a Sidh may very quickly memorize the language itself and be able to comprehend what is said or written in it, it will still take regular practice before he can write poems in that tongue. Still, a Sidh will usually learn in a month what takes a year or more for a human.

Most Sidh polyglots don't in fact speak these languages very well, since they normally have hardly any interaction with non-Sidhae, so their language skills are reserved mostly for the reading of old Terran classics in original languages. In other words, they can read and write a lot better than they can speak.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

In rural areas only a few people know the english fluently, others there just know a few words of it, and mostly it's all things like "hello" "no" and "yes". When you are in urban areas, if you want to climb up the food chain (literally) you've got to know english because in the moment Matululu Isles live on the foreign money while the government is trying to establish a source of income to get off the stone age.

Yes, though only recently. People of various linguistic groups began to mix with each other in what later became our country in the mid-17th century. By the late 18th century, most of these groups had lost their native tongue and taken to speaking the common language of the wider society (Russian). In this way, Georgians, Azeris, Armenians, Chechens, Ingush, Tabasarans, and others lost their languages. When Tatars and Ukrainians began to immigrate into our land in the mid 19th century, they soon found themselves mixing into the society and losing their languages as well by the 1920s. Since the 1960s, the Soviets encouraged us to learn English in order to be able to challenge others on a world scale. Since independence in 1991, English proficiency has increased dramatically, and in 2009 English was declared a second official language (to Russian).

To most people it is too much of a hassle to learn one language properly.

Bilingualism is almost only found among people of immigrant background.

It is not common. However, Italian, German and Lithuanian are commonly spoken in the most secluded towns in the country, where the majority of the people descent from immigrants from these nations.
Your nation is like a son. What it does right is your merit, as well as what it does wrong is your fault. When you praise it, be lucid and avoid exaggeration. Praising it too much can make it indolent. On the other hand, when you criticize it, be harsh, but do not ridicule it. Do your best to improve it, not through derision or disdain, but through good examples and dedication.

Is bilingualism common in your nation?

Postby Mechacercradonia » Tue Nov 26, 2013 1:25 pm

Yes, in today's time. Back then, Mechacercradonia only spoke one language, Cycloughphygish, an alien language using numbers and pictographs. Here is a passage written in Cycloughphygish:

Written Cycloughphygish: 92, 52131126161255 8244 52826 12 6587!

Pronounced: Mye Dah-mah-the-who-jah fon-gh nerr-heh-sai-jaccai-de-barl.

English: We, Mechacercradons will never be prisoners of war!

Now, due to negotiations with the "A"lliance and vice versa, English has became Mechacercradonia's second language.

Here are the phonics of written Cycloughphygish:
1= A,B,C
2= D,E,F
3= G,H,I
4= J,K,L
5= M,N,O
6= P,Q,R
7= S,T,U
8= V,W,X
9= Y,Z

The majority of Breheimians know a bit of another language (russian, english and runit being the most common ones), but only around 15% can claim to be fluent in more than one language (mostly english, with russian and runit being second and third respectively). Trilingualism is even rarer.

English and Equestrian are the two most commonly spoken languages throughout the Confederacy and it's constituent states, such that most people easily speak both bilingually and the rest pick up on one or the other in their time here enough to at least rudimentally communicate in it.

All Cyllean citizens are required to know Cyllean and English. Many citizens, however, take it further and learn 1 or 2 other languages. The most common languages for citizens to learn besides Cyllean and English are Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese and German.
We have a 98.5% bilingualism rate for Cyllean and English, a 72% trilingualism rate and a 46% quadrilingualism rate. Only 12% of our population know 5 or more languages.

trilingualism is the norm with quadlingualism being extremely common. Euronion citizens are fluent in Euronion, English, and Latin (the student has a choice of learning either archaic, clerical, or classical Latin). Quadlinguals are generally fleunt in either two forms of latin or have learned the primary language of one of our neighbors.
