The part where you said a clip is cartridges.

Cartridges are cartridges.

Clips are clips.

Clips are not cartridges.

It's genuinely confusing, especially to someone who might not know the difference.

That's kind of a silly semantic argument.

The real problem is that he seems to think some kind of "strip" is involved. It's a common mistake for the uninformed to confuse clips and stripper-clips, though, so I guess it's understandable.

This is why those who know better should not refer to magazines as clips or vice versa. It is confusing to those who may not know the difference.

The 7.92x33mm has only 1.4 grains less of capacity, for the record, and maximum ogive length is only 1mm shorter. I reckon they could be made equal out to combat ranges.

Im not saying they wouldn't be SIMILAR, but 7.62x39 would still be out-preforming it.

As for gene therapy...Thats not my area of expertise but I suppose, in theory, you could do it to resist C/B, bur not so much the R and N of CBRN. Biological immunity and Chemical immunity are one thing, where exposure to small doses (Vaccines and the same way people become immune to, say, snake poisons) would work in small amounts, but doing things like becoming immune to Radioactive materials and nuclear exposure are pretty difficult: Cell biology and whatnot cant rightly be changed based on what we have now, and as such it isn't fair for me to say what might be possible 20-30 years down the road. I just deal with trauma :P

Correct me if I'm wrong but has the process of manufacturing Damascus Steel only recently been re-discovered (at least, to be done enmass), and fount to contain some sort of carbon-nanotube handwavery?

Damascus Steel gets complicated fast, the leading theory is that what really made damascus steel good was the ores they were using, which were mined from an area near Damascus and really only available to the smiths in that area in India and exported to Damascus. Out side of that we've been able to make stuff that superficially looks like Damascus Steel, and is, for the most part, way better than what they would have been able to do back then.

But yes the real deal Damascus Steel did have both carbon nanotubes (tiny little bits) and crystallization (think semi-dimonds) in the blade. That part we will probably never really recreate because it required a specific material input, and since the area has been mined out we can't recreate it.

Black Hand wrote:From what I can tell duplex doubles projectiles but doesn't quite halve effectiveness.... So it is better. But you lose accuracy, and lethality, but with the lethality argument you are putting out twice as many rounds so you have an advantage in chances of actually hitting your target..... logic is strange, and I'm still not issuing them..... I'll just give my HMG and Rotary guns the ability to feed shotshells :p

Below 400 yards, they score just as many target hits as a ball round, but with multiple hits per target and more near misses.

Spirit of Hope wrote:
Black Hand wrote:Damascus steel isn't from Damascus, it's from India/Pakistan that region.

You are correct, however the problem still stands that we can't recreate it due to a lack of understanding of the minerals used to make it. Plus not having clear records on the manufacturing process.

Actually, we know exactly what it was made of, and we have fairly good written evidence of how it was made. The main issue is that we can't reproduce it on the large scale with that knowledge, and there's no incentive to find out how to do so.

Alright, science has proven Damascus steel to essentially have trillions of micrscopic (or just invisible to the naked eye) serrations, shredding plate maille and alloyed armors (heavy-weave and gauge chain maille was no exception). Well, then take into effect the WW1 era trench spike and blend it with damascus manufacture with a mono-filament tubes of a micro-carbon element of some form mixed with the damascus steel itself allows for a form of absolutely skull numbing levels of plating popping doom. Another good example, check out the bodkin arrows utilized at the battle of Agincourt, those french knights were pulped by high velocity carbon steel wedges.

Blend a wedge with the "multiple edges" styling of those spike/plug bayonets very-clearly emulating their trench spike forefathers, but with the sturdy-ruggedness of a bodkin and rock an industrialized damascus.................eh, yer' scifi military can afford it, right?

Bodkin arrows while have gone easily trogh chainmail could not generally inflict severe or even any trough plate armor if mail leather and a gambeson was worn underneath.Though enough of them stuck in was probably very annoying), but they could penetrate helmet visors and a few other specific weakspots. The test in the video does not seem very authentic as actual historical plates(at least the few I saw) do not show such bending around arrow/bolt penetrations suggesting they were also somewhat stronger than the ones used in the test.It is to be noted how ever that said specimens were renaissance plates. Armor piercing crossbow bolts on the other hand if fired from close enough did go trough plate.

How WW1 are you wanting go?

Body armour was certainly around in ww1, and not just in the form of funny looking sheets of steel. Concealable vest were common as were full on "bullet proof" feild jackets

Probably a good indication of what you might want to base your "armour" on would be the chemico body shield, it looks fairly modern bar the fact it uses buttons and only has two small pockets rather a mess of pouchs/molle loops:

and if going with ww1 looks then any armour should be topped with a set of 1908 pattern webbing:

Ragnaran infantry use the bullpup A67K in 6.74x47mm, feeding from 30 round polymer see-through magazines. The LMG version is the A67SW and there is also a carbine version, the A67C.

Yeah I go away for the weekend and this happens... ah well anyway body armour.

i vaguely recall reading a page i maanged to get to load in the spotty wifi and mobile coverage over the weekend with someone asking about thier twin protection rating plate thingy with a small plate juts over the centre upper torso.

I doubt you could effectively mnaufacture plates with variable protection levels in a single peice. Your best bet would be just to issue a good frag vest of PASGT type protection with pockets for smallish front and back ballisitc plates only covered the vital cardi vascular bits i.e. pretty much what the british did with the INIBA and ECBA vests.

My own random though/idea/vague plan. Body armour system with 4 methods of wear:

outer/cover minus filler to act simply as laod carrying equipment

cover + plates= plate carrier

Cover+ filler = darned good frag vest

Cover = filler+ plates= full on body armour set

Obviously it will have the full range of extras (i.e. collar, brassards, butt plate etc etc), incorporate a crye style support belt scaffold thingy system and include random technologies of +5 lightening and 3+ saving throw.

And for thsoe of you who like stuff thats a bit less gee whizz have a rocket ball repeater:

No they will likely call tanknutdave or someother member of one of the MV owners associations who will tut tut and SHAME you into giving yourself up (or at least getting your tracked vehicle license) lest you be SHUNNED by the great community (no more landrover/FV432 parts for you boyyo! and no special invitation to the MoD sales when they sneak cheiftans, challengers and centurions onto the auction block!).

Seriously driving military vehciels on britians roads is fairly easy, the license is a like a weeks work and the only thing that costs (other than the hours spent fixing bits) is the insurance, heck the fuel will often be free if you get something that will run on the results of putting petrol in a diesel engine (i.e. most russian and british armoured vehicles).
