:( So it's not the natural color of the wood... I just want to find a really nice looking wood...
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Go with walnut then. If you want to see what different wood types are like, check out the gallery at Ironwood Designs: http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/IWDGallery.html

As for what the stock on this AK-74 looked like pre-shellac, it would have looked like this at first: http://i.imgur.com/1zV5A89.jpg I imagine the manufacturer hand-picked the stock set pieces to get a uniform tone before undergoing the refinishing process (stripping, sanding, maybe stain/oiling, then shellacking).

Here's what the sanded stock would look like pre-refinish: http://i.imgur.com/gX6660d.jpg

Some kind of ridiculously hard wood that looks really good, dark-brown-ish, master race.

I spent 45 minutes of my day chipping away at a small block of it, trying to make a nicely-sized-hole for something I was making. I didn't actually get it finished today.

Hm... I wonder if there is an opposite. Like a really soft wood that's easy to work with but totally useless for firearms stocks because of it.

I hear any kind of maple is not the most practical wood to use though. It's apparently more fragile.

Would these designs work? I mean, everything except the magazine I know are correct. However, if these are wrong, which they most likely are, is there a way I could fix them? And what are your opinions on the new LSAT LMG? U.S army still has it in testing, but, what a your opinions?

The Finnish-capture SVT-40 supposedly has a birch stock. I'm not that great at wood identification, so I'll take the owner's word over mine. I am quite certain the M1 Garand and M1A/M14 have a walnut stock.

Those look nice but they are also the generic wood color that resembles mousins, mausers etc. Not avantguard enough...

Were it not the cost, I would love to issue English walnut stocks. Quick question though. Would it be feasible to issue POSP 4x24 on a large scale, like Amreekis with their optics. I think not, and if so, what would be a good comblock alternative? PK-AS?

I think it somewhat resembles curly birch, (betula pendula var. carelica), it's a mutation of silver birch that grows large bulbs where the year rings do not line up properly, giving it a distinct look. I'm not sure though. In fact, I'm far from sure.
