What's your standard GPMG ammo?

It would be 6.5x55mm, however getting any of those rechambered wouldn't be a big deal since afaik the M60 is the only one that wasn't offered in it.

Ulfr, Tsavon, disrespect the power of curved blades again and I'll cut your balls off with the above Khopesh.

The sword you just talked down on, is much more practical.
Your khopesh is the best line art of a sword I have seen. Truly- But the khopesh is the worst sword ever. Period.
I have a total of about 8 years of fencing experience, belive me it works not.

You've probably not seen many linearts of swords then, but thanks.

Depending on what kind of fencing, it's not really relevant as the Khopesh was not a sword meant for precision and quick strikes. It also hasn't been used in battle with period troops, armour and tactics for over 2000 years. Added to that the very limited knowledge about it, actual guesses about it's effectiveness are uncertain.

I don't want to get into another debate about the Khopesh's effectiveness, but everyone is comparing it to much later swords made out of steel and higher quality bronze. They also came in a vast array of lengths and had varying amount of curve to the blade, so saying it was a heavy and slow blade is rather silly.
It is/was perfect for cutting through the "armour" of the day, as well as pulling an enemies shield away and following up by shivving him in the face.

The Fordorsian Khopesh is of Ulfheim steel, so durability is much less of an issue too.

What a crude bayonet. I would feel bad about giving it to a male conscript, let alone any real warrior. My own bayonet is far more refined, and may be used in the off-hand in a swordfight.

Depends on the situation. It's the Khurki equivalent for Fordorsia's French Foreign Legion equivalent who fight in the heaviest fighting zones in a universe where close combat is rife, so not expecting it to be used...yeah.

Hm... I am modeling my own on the AK bayonet. So this has me thinking. Would it be a good idea to skip a type I and just go strait with a type II like design? I am not sure why they went from plastic to steel and back to plastic but I assume it had something to do with the plastic. If that is so I might even stick to wood for a while longer.

Also, how does the blade attach to the handle without things being conductive? I mean you have to put some lugs through the tang and into the handle sides. Is that plastic as well or maybe just rubber insulated?

Also, this is where I get all my data from.

I did not. I didnt feel like reading 27 pages to be honest.

It's not even on this thread... I think. Overall a good point.

I suspect I'll ask Ulfr when he reappears, but I'm thinking that either a tanto or stiletto will be what I need.

I do have a slightly different question though. If I'm already issuing multi tools, do I still need an ultra utility knife as well?
I'm thinking I might just do a specific combat knife/bayonet.

Not really, what im saying is you should effort making your bayonet both a combat knife AND a utility knife. Having a straight combat knife isnt bad, provided you have a multitool.

Would it be plausible to use gene therapy to increase resistance to biological, chemical and radiological weapons, as well as to reduce the chances of a soldier developing PTSD in the near future (2030-2040)?

Maybe within 100m they would be roughly on par but any further it would be in 7.62x39mms favors.

The 7.92x33mm has only 1.4 grains less of capacity, for the record, and maximum ogive length is only 1mm shorter. I reckon they could be made equal out to combat ranges.

Im not saying they wouldn't be SIMILAR, but 7.62x39 would still be out-preforming it.

As for gene therapy...Thats not my area of expertise but I suppose, in theory, you could do it to resist C/B, bur not so much the R and N of CBRN. Biological immunity and Chemical immunity are one thing, where exposure to small doses (Vaccines and the same way people become immune to, say, snake poisons) would work in small amounts, but doing things like becoming immune to Radioactive materials and nuclear exposure are pretty difficult: Cell biology and whatnot cant rightly be changed based on what we have now, and as such it isn't fair for me to say what might be possible 20-30 years down the road. I just deal with trauma :P

Ulfr-Reich wrote:Armor piercing sword bayonets eh? Hmmmmmmm...................................... well, dash it all, I've got an idea.

Alright, science has proven Damascus steel to essentially have trillions of micrscopic (or just invisible to the naked eye) serrations, shredding plate maille and alloyed armors (heavy-weave and gauge chain maille was no exception). Well, then take into effect the WW1 era trench spike and blend it with damascus manufacture with a mono-filament tubes of a micro-carbon element of some form mixed with the damascus steel itself allows for a form of absolutely skull numbing levels of plating popping doom. Another good example, check out the bodkin arrows utilized at the battle of Agincourt, those french knights were pulped by high velocity carbon steel wedges.

Blend a wedge with the "multiple edges" styling of those spike/plug bayonets very-clearly emulating their trench spike forefathers, but with the sturdy-ruggedness of a bodkin and rock an industrialized damascus.................eh, yer' scifi military can afford it, right?

Correct me if I'm wrong but has the process of manufacturing Damascus Steel only recently been re-discovered (at least, to be done enmass), and fount to contain some sort of carbon-nanotube handwavery?

Also, wheres my Drilling(spelling) 14.5x114/12.7mm Rifle? :P

I beg to differ.

The M60 may have a staple of hate in the (former) MMW, but it was actually pretty well liked and is good enough to still be ussed in service.

The MAG is notoriously THE most popular western GPMG, and has ALSO been well received.

The MG-51 is VERY well liked, and excellently made, to the point where its been produced for 52 years.

Madsen-Saetter, I'll give you.

I'm not a gun-fanatic. I only know a bit about guns.

What about it?

all of those guns are terrible

I beg to differ.

The M60 may have a staple of hate in the (former) MMW, but it was actually pretty well liked and is good enough to still be ussed in service.

The MAG is notoriously THE most popular western GPMG, and has ALSO been well received.

The MG-51 is VERY well liked, and excellently made, to the point where its been produced for 52 years.

Madsen-Saetter, I'll give you.

Even Fordorsia uses a FordMAG. When we use something you know it's like, the best thing in all the history.

Not sure whether to remake this or make a more modern replacement to join the Mk.9 Service Rifle.

Correct me if I'm wrong but has the process of manufacturing Damascus Steel only recently been re-discovered (at least, to be done enmass), and fount to contain some sort of carbon-nanotube handwavery?

Damascus Steel gets complicated fast, the leading theory is that what really made damascus steel good was the ores they were using, which were mined from an area near Damascus and really only available to the smiths in that area. Out side of that we've been able to make stuff that superficially looks like Damascus Steel, and is, for the most part, way better than what they would have been able to do back then.

But yes the real deal Damascus Steel did have both carbon nanotubes (tiny little bits) and crystallization (think semi-dimonds) in the blade. That part we will probably never really recreate because it required a specific material input, and since the area has been mined out we can't recreate it.

Damascus steel isn't from Damascus, it's from India/Pakistan that region.

In that case, the only logical solution to this problem is to finally develop lightsabers.
