Introduction:

The Dominion of Tergnitz, officially known as the The Righteous Imperial Dominion of Tergnitz, is a large nation which is located in the geographic region of Ellorea. It is a conservative nation, whose citizens tend to be highly moralistic in their social beliefs. The Dominion is economically strong, with large reserves of natural resources, well-developed industries and a powerhouse of a private sector, led by several large multi-national corporations who are headquartered in the Dominion. It is a nation renowned for its compulsory military service, with an intelligent, hard-working population of 3,000,326,155 billion.

The Dominion is constitutionally a Federal Hereditary Crowned Unicameral Multi-Party Senatorial Ecclesiastical Corporatocratic Democratic Plutocracy, ruled by His Imperial Majesty by the Divine Providence of the Almighty, the Emperor of Tergnitz, Augustus Tiberian Vera I; Patriarch of the House of Vera, Protector of Mankind, Father of the Fatherland, His Eminence the High and Most Holy Primate of the United Church Militant of Tergnitz, Defender of the Faith, Princeps Senatus, Perpetuus Invictus, Imperator Destinatus, Imperium Maius, Pius Felix, High Lord of Commerce and Navigation, Grand Baron of the Upper and Lower Realms, Duke of Runnor, Lord Regent of Brusta , Lord Protector of the Allied-States of -Deus-, Dominus of the Praetorian Guard and Supreme Imperator of the Tergnitzian People, with a fair and even hand. The small Federal government concentrates mainly on Defence, although Law and Order and Commerce are on the agenda. Crime, especially youth-related, is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive, national police force and the Empire's national animal is the Eagle. The Dominion is currently attempting to expand its presence on the world stage through a mix of economic, diplomatic and military actions.

Golden Eagle Ascendant: A Comprehensive History of the Righteous Imperial Dominion of Tergnitz

By Baron Octavus Xander Kellis, D.A

Preface
~~~
When I embarked on the seemingly insurmountable task of chronicling the entire history of our glorious Dominion, from discovery to the modern day; some twenty years ago, many people, including my own wife, called me insane while playfully suggesting that I up my medication dosage. I think the results speak for themselves however, as my original eight-part series, ‘Golden Eagle Ascendant: A Comprehensive History of the Righteous Imperial Dominion of Tergnitz’, which was released in 2010, is widely recognized today as the foremost, comprehensive history of our nation; and has remained within the top ten bestseller lists of every major retailer chain in the nation since its release.
With the release of this e-book version however, I have managed to streamline the narrative of my original series; while simultaneously adding new information about events that have occurred since the original series was written. This condensed version, while slightly lacking in detail and different viewpoints when compared to the original series, still manages to outline the main events in the birth and growth of our nation; delving occasionally into more detail for key events. Overall, I personally think that it does an excellent job of capturing the events and people who have made this Dominion into the nation it is today; and I hope you agree with me.
For my Wife and Daughters - You are my Inspiration
Chapter One
The Great Migration
(1562-1700)
~~~

In A.D 1562, New Azuran explorer Indri Corvin, under contract to Ixion Uramahael of the Recast Lineage, reached several tropical islands across the wide expanse of the previously unmapped Juedan Sea aboard the AIV Marta Vana, making first contact with the indigenous people. [See image opposite] Short on essential supplies such as fresh water, food and timber, Corvin traded with several native villages to replenish the ship’s stocks before departing. His report to the Azuran government noted the apparent abundance of both rich soil and plentiful timber supplies; yet concluded by stating that better colonial aspects were evident elsewhere due to the small number of islands.

In A.D 1624, the Great Revolution swept the New Azuran continent, an event which saw the progressive secular government established by non-Cailenes overthrown by the Ixionist Hegemony. Fearing increased persecution by the new Cailene-dominated government, a small band of religious puritans decided to flee New Azura in search of a new land to colonize, where they could live and worship free from the tyrannical hand of the Cailene Church. By pooling what meagre funds they had, the new colonists were able to purchase a single ship, the former Azuran Naval frigate Trasil, along with a majority of the supplies which they would need to build a town in the New World.

The colonist’s voyage to the New World was marked with misfortune and numerous setbacks saw their journey delayed by four months before they had even left port due a succession of large storm fronts. Additionally, by the end of the trip, one quarter of the original colonists were brought down by disease and malnutrition. Yet despite these hindrances, the colonists retained their firm faith in the divine will of the Lord and pressed on to found the first settlement, the town of Totetum, in A.D 1626.

The religious crackdown by the Ixionist Hegemony in A.D 1632 had been predicted by many fringe Christian groups and thus consequentially, many had followed the example established by their brethren six years prior, resulting in a wave of emigration. By 1634, the colony of Totetum had a population of nearly three thousand with an additional eight thousand Scandinavian Catholic Christians settling adjacent islands. To avoid the possibility of conflict over the island's diminishing free land and resources, representatives from all nine of the new settlements met on September 1st, 1634 in Totetum and agreed to join together and form the state of Triumni, as well as the Theocratic Christian City-State of Tergnitz.

Image
Over the next two decades, increased persecution against Christians living in New Azura would see immigration to the New World rise rapidly as more and more of the faithful realized that they could not live in such an oppressive land. This mass movement would later be called the Great Awakening. During this period, the colonists discovered that the land in which they had settled extended far beyond a simple set of islands. This finding prompted a large emigration from the islands to the mainland as well as the creation of the state of Brax in A.D 1645.

With a high birth rate, relatively low death rate and steady immigration, the colonial population grew rapidly. However, this swift increase in population placed pressure on the already tense relationship between the colonialists and the natives. The native population on the island chain had been wiped out in A.D 1638 after a malaria outbreak, enhanced by pathogens from the Old World spread like wildfire through native villages. Yet on the mainland, native tribes had not been ravaged by disease like their island counterparts and consequentially were able to resist the colonist’s slow yet steady push inland into their territory.

Confrontations between native tribes and the colonial militia saw a marked increase in 1646 with the first missionary expeditions into the mainland interior. The natives, steeped in tradition and pagan worship, fiercely resented the push by evangelic Scandinavian Catholic Christian missionaries to convert them and began to attack and massacre missionary expeditions moving through their territory. After the loss of two such expeditions, the Scandinavian Catholic Church of Tergnitz convened a meeting of the City-State Council on June the 5th, 1647 and formally put a petition forward for an army to be temporarily raised to wipe out the native threat – Triblanka Declaration. The motion was carried unanimously and within six months, ninety-percent of the native tribes inhabiting the mainland within a week’s march of the City-State had been destroyed, with the survivors fleeing eastwards.

With the close of the 17th century, a rash of brutal wars raged across the Old World, driving many non-religious settlers to seek refuge in the City-State. Initially welcomed with open arms by the colonists, the sheer number of refugees began to take its toll on the City-State’s hospitable nature. By 1697, there were open calls by prominent religious figures within the City-State to halt all immigration from the Old World unless new immigrants converted to the strict Scandinavian Catholic Christian interpretation espoused by the Church. These calls contributed to a slow rise in tensions between the original, puritanical colonists and the new wave of protestant and secular refugees.

Chapter Two
God or Country
(1700-1714)

~~~
The Theocratic Christian City-State of Tergnitz entered the 18th century with stark internal divisions, on one hand were the original colonists; religiously puritanical Scandinavian Catholic Christians who were concentrated in the City-State’s urban centres as well as in the states of Triumni and Brax. The island state of Triumni in particular would have been considered heavily under the influence of the Scandinavian Catholic Church due to its high concentration of first generation colonists, many of whom had been able to amass a great deal of both wealth and knowledge, making the state the center of cultural, political and military power in the City-State.
On the other hand however, were the new immigrants to the City-State; a vast assortment of different individuals lacking in any unifying factor except for the fact that they had left the Old World in search of a new and better life. Ranging from all walks of life, the new immigrants tended to come from the poorer classes of society and as such, were more inclined to leave the relative comfort of the City-States urban centers in an attempt to stake a claim in Tergnitz’s vast, unexplored interior.
Despite the rising religious and political tensions between these two very distinct social groups, the exploration and settlement of the mainland proceeded unhindered, spurred on by the City-State’s high level of immigration and the continuing violence and persecution in the Old World. Dubbed the Age of Exploration, it was widely believed that any man could arrive at the New World and find a better life for himself and his family if he was willing to work hard and was determined to succeed.
Image
This optimistic mood evaporated however in 1711, when renowned astronomer and philosopher John Christopher Barker was arrested by the agents of the Scandinavian Catholic Church in the small town of Alberstien in the state of Triumni. Mr Barker was formally charged with heresy of the second degree and the possession of blasphemous material, despite the vocal outcry of the state’s protestant and secular communities. Mr Barker was brought before a Church Conclave where he plead his innocence before being sentenced to death by burning. This single event is seen by many modern historians as a turning point in the history of the Theocratic City-State, with noted Revisionist historian J.P Sherman stating that;
    “The preposterous trial and brutal execution of renowned moderate John Christopher Barker signalled to the colonists that religious conservatives had taken command among the upper tiers of the Church and that they would brook no opposition to their monopoly of power.”
Persecution against all immigrant groups intensified over the next two years, culminating with the unanimous passing of the Vrantass Decree by the City-State Council on November the 3rd, 1713. The Decree was designed by the Scandinavian Catholic Church in consultation with the wealthy merchant princes who made up the City-State Council to concentrate its stronghold on power in the state of Triumni, while simultaneously weakening any potential emerging opposition groups throughout the City-State. The Decree explicitly stated that all immigration, excluding migrants from a proven Scandinavian Catholic background, would be permanently halved. Furthermore, it stated that all new immigrants to the City-State shall only be processed on the mainland; while additionally restricting all individual and group movement from the mainland to the island state of Triumni.
Image
News of the decree’s approval spread throughout the City-State rapidly, prompting mass riots in many cities. However, it was the march on the Merchant Quarter in the city of Tyrus which would act as a catalyst for war. One week had passed since the news of the decree’s approval had reached Tyrus, in this time the various political clubs within the city had decided on a joint plan of action. On Sunday the 10th, an estimated eight hundred citizens, men women and children, filled out of their homes and various church services and gathered in the town square. From there, the citizens gathered flags from their various former countries and marched on the town’s fortress-like Merchant Quarter in protest of the decree. They were met by a force of roughly eighty Scandinavian Catholic Church Militia along with several dozen personal bodyguards at the imposing stone gatehouse of the Merchant Quarter. A series of sources demonstrate that the crowd began to get hostile, hurling both abuse and refuse at the armed men barring their way. The militia held their ground, muskets trained on the increasingly aggressive ground. Where the order to fire originated has never been resolved, but despite the anonymous nature of the command, the militia followed it without hesitation, gunning down forty members of the crowd while wounding at least one hundred more. The crowd fled and the event has gone down in history as the Tyrus Massacre, the event which sparked the First Tergnitzian Civil War.
Chapter Three
A Nation in Flames
(1714-1721)
~~~

The Scandinavian Catholic Church Conclave of Bishops, upon hearing of the Tyrus Massacre and several days after the atrocity decided to take a series of decisive steps to prevent the possibility of open rebellion. The first of which was the passing of the secret Bulger Bull, an ecclesiastical edict bearing the name of the politically powerful Archbishop Bulger of Triumni. The Bull proclaimed that the massacre was an event during which a heathen, immigrant mob numbering over three thousand brutally murdered eighty Church Militiamen before desecrating their corpses. This circulation of this falsified ‘official’ account of the massacre among the populace served to further inflame the religious tensions in the City-State while additionally granting the Church a larger degree of control and influence over the Merchant Princes and therefore over the nation.

Within a week of the Massacre, the Church Conclave, led by Archbishop Bulger pushed for the declaration of martial law in the City-State and a full, but temporary suspension of all political and civil rights. The motion was widely popular among the City-State’s wealthy elite who flocked to the banner of the Church in droves; few noticed the hidden sub-clauses of the declaration which saw control of the City-State’s small army and navy shift to from the State to the Church. Even fewer realized that this small shift made the Church the strongest military power in the New World. The Theocratic Christian City-State of Tergnitz ceased from this moment to exist as a separate entity; economic, military and political power were all fully in the hands of the Tergnitzian Scandinavian Catholic Church.

During this time, the news of the Massacre travelled swiftly throughout the City-State prompting small bands of men and young boys, numbering from small groups of ten, to hundreds of individuals in several cases, to descend upon their local Scandinavian Catholic churches, merchant quarters and civil banks. The City-State’s wealthy elite were seen to be tied directly to the Church, thus the general feeling among the populace as that they should suffer the same fate. Symbols and buildings of the state which once invoked both awe and fear were burnt down mercilessly in a spate of disorganized and spontaneous uprisings.
Image

During this period, many cities in the southern islands declared their allegiance to the Church and the City-State government, while an equal number of hamlets and towns on the mainland signalled their desire to secede from the City-State and form their own nation. Then there were the towns in which a consensus opinion regarding the state of the nation could not be reached. Some of these instances ended amicably, with the holders of the minority opinion simply leaving. However in other there were eruptions of open warfare which saw neighbour fight neighbour. These towns were the lucky ones in the eyes of Civil War historian Vincent Yeldhem, who is quoted as saying:

    “The most bone-chilling accounts which I have managed to discover tell of brutal campaigns of humiliation and systematic extermination. In the mainland town of Fargen, Scandinavian Catholic priests with the aid of detachments of Church militiamen forced families to commit incest with each other under the false pretence that doing so would save them from the pyre. Upon competition of the act, the priests would then carefully record the name of each individual in the house before ordering the militiamen to board up all of the entrances and then to light it on fire. In the words of one priest, "doing so, would be a great service to God as we are cleansing the world of despicable filth and sin.”
Four months after the Massacre, the United Congress of Free States is held in the new state of Nassan in Orsa. Twenty-three ‘nations’, all former townships, hamlets and ranches who declared their independence in the aftermath of the Massacre attended the Congress. After roughly a week of bartering, negotiations, bickering and several brawls, the attendees all formally agree to formally secede from the Theocratic Christian City-State of Tergnitz in order to form the Confederate Union of Tergnitz. Today, the formation of the Confederate Union is largely accredited to four individuals who through sheer charisma and willpower, united a diverse range of different groups and ideologies under one common banner. Retired Field Marshal Nolan Stross of Triumni, the famously intelligent nobleman Hadrian Aventis Vera, the renowned historian and inventor Jonathan Archer Drake and the wealthy industry titan, Henry Dimontius Balin.

Unknown to Stross however, a pair of local shepard boys had witnessed the Confederates landing and had reported it to their local priest. This news reached the Grand Scandinavian Catholic Cathedral in Totetum by the end of the day. Despite attempts by the Church to suppress the news, panic began to erupt throughout the city. Nobles and commoners alike attempted to flee the city en mass, however many were halted dead in their tracks by the Church militia who had established armed checkpoints around the city. Men as young as fourteen and as old as fifty were drafted into the Church’s armed forces, sometimes voluntarily but more often at spear point.

The General of the City-State standing Army, Luther Murhass used these conscripted men to construct a series of defensive earthworks several kilometres from the capital. Working every hour of the day and night for three days, the soldiers under General Kas managed to complete the fortifications. Sunrise on the fourth day, Field Marshal Stross’s force attacked the Kas Line three times over three hours. Every attempt was repulsed with immense losses on both sides; however the numerical and defensive advantage of General Murhass's forces barely managed to give him and advantage over Stross’s smaller yet more experienced men, granting him the victory at what is now referred to as the Siege of the Murhass Line.

Forced to break off the attack due to intelligence reports of impending enemy reinforcements, Field Marshal Stross and his greatly reduced force of roughly seven thousand began to march back to their temporary base of operations. General Murhass followed with a force of nearly twenty-thousand and proceeded to surround and besiege the wooden fort.

Far behind enemy lines with no chance of reinforcement or escape, with supplies running low and disease spreading through the camp, Field Marshal Stross elected to throw open the fort’s main gate and charge at the Church siege line. It is written in his personal diary, which was recovered from the fort by General Murhass that, “I would rather meet God with blood on my hands and an apology on my lips than with clean gloves and an empty heart.”
[T.R. Elliot, A Complete History of First Tergnitzian Civil War (Pretoria: Tergnitz National University, 2001), p. 528] Field Marshal Stross and the remainder of his expeditionary force was cut down on the field of battle that day, killing and estimated two Church soldiers for each Union soldier killed.

Image
The complete destruction of Stross’s expeditionary force suffocated the hopes of the Confederates for an early end to the war. It also placed them on the back foot, as they had lost over half of their standing army and one of their most gifted tacticians in the attempt. At this point, the Church could have pressed their numerical and strategic advantage to severely hammer the secessionist Union. However, the attack on the capital had seriously rattled the Church leadership and they opted for a more cautious strategy focusing on solidifying their position in the southern islands. With this decision, the Church sacrificed their opportunity to capitalize on the Confederates losses; a decision which resulted in the war dragging on for an addition three years.

Three years of slow, attrition warfare as both sides sought to solidify their positions by routing out internal rebels and pockets of resistance within their territory. The Church slowly lost its territory on the mainland, some it simply abandoned to the Confederates, others were lost only after a great degree of bloodshed. A new defensive line, the Kas Line, modelled on the successful Murhass Line, was established well before the city of Tyrus, the last city controlled by the Church on the mainland in July, 1716.

A further four years of agonizingly slow warfare passed before any meaningful change came to the war, which had effectively been a stalemate in everything but name up until this point. A decisive attack on the Kas Line above Tyrus, led by First General Hadrian Vera on the 2nd of January, 1721, caught the defenders completely by surprise. An hour after the initial charge, General Vera had routed the enemy and captured the entire western half of the Line. Acting against his orders from the United Congress to simply secure the remainder of the Line, First General Vera pressed on with the majority of his troops towards the port-city of Tyrus.

The Church soldiers, disorganized and weary from years away from their families on the Kas Line surrendered in droves to the advancing forces under First General Vera. Upon reaching the city of Tyrus, the Confederate forces were amazed to see that thousands of warships and converted merchantmen were docked within the port’s walls. Unknown to the Confederates, a powerful tropical storm had recently engulfed the channel between the mainland and the Southern Islands. The Church Fleet patrols had decided to take shelter in the nearby Tyrus rather than brave the storm to return to the islands.

First General Vera’s force proceeded to besiege and capture the city of Tyrus in the span of two days with the aid of several spies inside the city walls. The loss of Tyrus in addition to the bulk of the City-State’s Navy is seen by many historians as the turning point in the civil war, the moment which nailed the first nail into the Church’s coffin.

Six months after the capture of Tyrus and seven years after Field Marshal Stross’s failed expedition, Confederate forces returned once again to the tilled plains before the grand city of Totetum. The Church, desperate at this point and willing to use all available means to defend its jewel city conscripted the city’s entire population; men and women, poor and noble alike were drafted to serve in the Church’s armed forces. With the departure of the so-called ‘Holy Army of the Faithful’ to the old site of the Murhass Line, it was said by the few priests who remained in the city that, “a whispered conversation on one side of the city could be heard with complete clarity on the other side.”
[A. Brank, Divine Corruption: The Madness of Archbishop Bulger (Totetum : Imperial University of Totetum, 1964), p. 591] An amazing feat in a city which had once boasted a population of over two-hundred thousand at one point.

Upon hearing the news that Confederate forces had once again landed on the main isle, Archbishop Bulger gathered his supporters and in a secret ceremony, crowned himself Supreme Pontiff of the Scandinavian Catholic Church. His supporters immediately set about purging the remaining priests in the city in the forlorn hope that, “God would look more favourably towards his devoted subjects and ensure their survival at the hands of the vile heathens.”
[A. Brank, Divine Corruption: The Madness of Archbishop Bulger (Totetum : Imperial University of Totetum, 1964), p. 702] The streets of Totetum ran thick with blood, a sight echoed in the plains surrounding the city as the Confederate Army butchered the untrained and ill-armed ‘Holy Army of the Faithful.’

The Battle of Edern has gone down in the Dominion’s history as one of our nation’s proudest moments; the instant that our proud nation threw off the chains of theocratic tyranny with aid of the steady hand and awe-inspiring leadership of First General Vera.

Chapter Four
The Veran Dynasty
(1721-1722)

~~~
The landslide victory for the Confederate forces in the Battle of Edern, allowed the army, under First General Vera to triumphantly enter Totetum, the capital of the once-great Theocratic Christian City-State. However the victory was pyrrhic in nature, as the Confederate army soon discovered. Totetum, the City-State’s crowning jewel of wealth, learning and culture, was no more. The cobbled streets of the city that once were alive with the sounds of emotional debate and intense bartering were now silent. The only legacy of this grand display of vibrancy and life was dry, blood-stained cobbles, thick corpse rats and a legion of wounded beggars. In a truly surprising move, suicides and desertions among the First General’s army increased by roughly twenty percent in the weeks following the victory at Edern. Hardened veterans, men who had fought and bled in battles against the Church were emotionally and mentally crushed from the realization that their sacrifice had amounted to nothing, or at least nothing they could physically see with their own eyes. This first-hand account of Army Captain Halric Bestran of the Confederate 29th Heavy Infantry, explores this sentiment in depth:
    “Priuate Donald Hobbs and Lance Corporale Jarin Pertal were both harde men. They had joined the Confederate Armyie in 1715, in the aftermathe of the disastrous Stross expedition, and had endvred both the gvns and swords of the Chvrch's soldiers and the horrors of the battlefielde. Furthermore, I had personallyie seen Pertal looting the corpses of dead soldiers, both ovrs and theirse. These were men who had stared death in the face, only to emerge from this experience alivee, at least on the ovtside. When the Armyie entered Totetvm after ovr uictory at Edern, I saw something change in both men’s eyese. A tiny flicker of hope which theyie had managed to keep bvrning throvghout the war finally petered out. It was as if Lorde Almighty God had come to the men and said, “Yov kept it together lads, good worke. It’s time to rest now.” The dayie after we entered the city, the morning watche fovnd both men perched on a roofetop observing the sunrise. Theyie had cvt their own throats at dawne, and as the svn rose its golden rays reflected off their lifeblood pooled on the roofe.”
Unwilling to let his mighty army be swallowed by the now decrepit city First General Vera ordered the majority of the arm make camp outside the city's walls only two weeks after they had entered through the mighty Travin Gates. Officially the men were told that they were leaving the city to prepare defensive positions as the city's walls had been compromised by years of neglect so that they could, "completely deter any possible counter-attack by die-hard enemy radicals aimed at re-taking the city."
[T.R. Elliot, A Complete History of First Tergnitzian Civil War (Pretoria: Tergnitz National University, 2001), p. 912] Yet while the common rank and file solider knew that this was not the true rationale behind the order, he was nevertheless glad to leave the 'Necropolis,' as Totetum was beginning to be referred to. A fact which is evident due to the significant drop in the suicide rate among the army in the weeks after leaving the city. First General Vera however did not accompany his army, electing to remain within the city with a core cadre of loyal, elite soldiers and officers, with the aim of scouring the city of traitors and malcontents.
In a symbolic move, General Vera decided to billet his token force within the Church's Great Cathedral, a gesture which demonstrated the Confederates complete and utter victory over the Church and the City-State. Looking back from our privileged position however, we now understand that this was a truly foolish move that is uncharacteristic for the typically shrewd General. Roughly a week and a half after the main body of General Vera's army had left Totetum, fires broke out within the Cathedral which spread with surprisingly speed. While General Vera ordered the structure to be immediately vacated, thirty-eight soldiers, four of them Noble Officers did not escape the inferno, which to spectators at the time looked as if, "Hell itself was consuming the former Temple of God, punishing Mankind for its sinful nature."
[C.N. Alexandro, Decadent Beauty: Churches and Cathedrals of the Tergnitzian Scandinavian Catholic Church (Tibur: University of Tibur, 1999), p. 46] To this day debate rages as to whether the fire was the result of a lack of a month of proper maintenance and a build-up of flammable refuse; an act of God punishing the former Priests for turning away from Him in the closing days of the war; or a direct act of sabotage by die-harm members of the Church. One interesting piece of information that is rarely brought up during these arguments however, is the fact that Archbishop Bulger was never apprehended, nor was his body found.
In the aftermath of the Cathedral fire, First General Vera, desperate to avoid the image of the fire being seen as a ill omen by the common soldiers, ordered that the Cathedral be turn down, block by block, and then broken down further into smaller pillars to be used as grave markers for lives lost by both sides during the Battle of Edern. The site of this impromptu burial is now recognized as the Veran Memorial Cemetery and is the resting place for the Dominion's fallen Emperor's, as well as members of the Imperial Family, honored politicians and war heroes.
Six months after his victory over the once-great Theocratic Christian City-State, First General Vera returned to the transitional Capital of the Confederate Union, the city of Orsa in the state Nassan on September 1st, 1721, at the head of his army; a military force that was now being referred to as ‘Vera’s Chosen’ by the multitude. Vera’s arrival hardly came as a surprise to the citizens of Orsa, or the economic and political elite of the still relatively new Confederate Union, and they had decided to formally greet and honour the returning military force and its now famous General; while simultaneously opening the 14th United Congress of Free States. This shrewd move by the Confederation’s elite was designed to both appease the ego of First General Vera, while at the same time, sidelining his influence from the political process.
The Confederate Union had undergone a truly significant degree of change during the course of the war; with the twenty-three founding ‘nations’ now reduced to five semi-independent nation-states, alongside the military-governed and occupied territory of the former City-State. Delegates were either elected or appointed, as per the own ‘nation’s’ political process, to the United Congress of Free States, where they served for two years during the Congress’s bi-annual, three-monthly sittings. In the seven years of war however, the actual stature of the Confederate Union’s ‘capital’ had not changed much; a fact which reflected the low degree of power the Union wielded over its member-states. Putting these structural changes aside, the final significant change within the Confederate Union was the formation of three distinct political ‘camps’ or factions:
      Drakeons
      Veranists
      Balinites
      Informally headed by the renowned historian and inventor Jonathan Archer Drake, this political faction congregated on the left-side of the United Congress hall. Lacking a singular political code or ‘party platform’; it’s their member-delegates were typically from the Northern frontier states, and as such more strongly supported the rights of member-states to make their decisions independent of the Union’s governing body. Furthermore, they were large advocates of increased immigration, sought to put restrictions on the right to public displays of religion and were in favour of a direct democracy approach to government.
      While not ‘official’ connected to the famous First General at the time, this political faction congregated in the middle of the United Congress hall and was the smallest out of the three. Its member-delegates came from all across the Confederate Union, excluding the recently conquered Southern Islands; and were typically individuals who were close associates of the First General. Some had served with in him combat, others were from towns he had liberated and more still were friends of his extended family. This faction also lacked any singular political code, yet its member-delegates were generally in favour of the expansion of the Union physically, as well as militarily. On most other issues however, they usually held positions in-between the other two factions.
      Publicly led by wealthy industry titan Henry Dimontius Balin, this political faction congregated on the right-side of the United Congress hall and was the largest of the three. In stark contrast to the other two political blocs, this group had a comparatively rigid hierarchy with several ‘tiers’ of membership. Each tier became progressively smaller as each individual delegate’s personal wealth and dedication to the faction increased. Furthermore, each tier was governed by a Durak (governing council), whose members were appointed by the leading Durak. In keeping with their hierarchical structure, the faction’s political goals were clearly and singularly expressed; they were in favour of increased centralization and power for the Union government and wished to significantly scale back the power of the military and the amount of immigration. Goals that reflected the dominant political thinking from the Southern member-states where most of this faction’s supporters came from.
The calculating move by the Confederation’s elite to sideline First General Vera from the political process was destined to fail however, as the two major political factions within the United Congress, the Drakeons and the Balinites, subscribed to distinct and inherently contradictory political viewpoints. Thus, as the days after the First General’s return to the capital turned to weeks, neither bloc was willing to compromise on their ideological beliefs to help form a document outlining what the role, powers and responsibilities of the government of the Confederate Union of Tergnitz would be in the post civil-war period (The Articles of Governance). As a result of this prolonged disagreement, the two camps began to adopt more polarized views; and arguments both within the United Congress building and in the streets quickly became all-out brawls between supporters of the two factions. Three weeks after First General Vera’s triumphant return, on September 22nd, 1721, a line was crossed that threatened to plunge the entire nation back into civil war.
At 5:45 a.m. on Thursday the 22nd of September, Syn Illian Mecanus, a delegate from the Southern city of Port Evertt was found dead by a passing stagecoach driver near the center of the Capital. The Orsan police department was on the scene within the hour; quickly followed by military police units from First General Vera’s army, still camped outside the city limits. The complete police investigation and report into the incident, finalized some two months after the actual event found that:
    “Mr Mecanvs was only three blocks from his temporaryie place of residencee was he was strvck in the backe of the heade with a blvnt object. This attack disoriented Mr Mecanuvs, cavsing him to fall to his kneese. It was at this point that he was stabbed some seven times in the backe with a small blade. At this point, Mr Mecanvs would have been bleeding profuselyie and his attacker, in a crvde attempte to make the incident appear like a mvgging ‘gone wrong’ located Mr Mecanvs’s golde wedding band and removed it....”
    - Detectiue Cvllivs, Orsan Department of Police and Jvstice
With this investigation still to come however, a message was rushed by the military police units on scene back to the main army camp outside the city regarding the death of a United Congress delegate. The watch commander immediately brought this information to the attention of First General Vera, who ordered the entire camp to arms, before directing them to cordon off the entire city. Three hours after the incident, a patrolling unit found and arrested a man who appeared to be desperately trying to flee the city; his shoes stained with recently spilt blood. Upon being presented to First General Vera in his encampment outside the city, the man was recognized as Herentus Bruni, the personal secretary to Jonathan Archer Drake. Aware of the explosive nature of this information, First General Vera cautiously decided to keep the knowledge a tightly-guarded secret and remanded Bruni to one of the camp's empty stockades.
The next three days saw outbreaks of violence increase dramatically within the capital as the two large political factions sought to use the death of Mr Mecanus to advance their cause; either as a martyr, struck down for his beliefs – or as a false flag, a self-inflicted wound designed to curry favour with the masses. As the tide of chaos increased, members of the Veranist faction slowly used their influence to bolster their ranks with disillusioned members of the two other factions; moderates who had been caught up in the polarizing ideological battles. At the end of the third day, a day during which saw rioting and looting break-out in the Capital, as the police force found themselves overwhelmed and increasingly ideologically divided; First General Vera elected to visit the United Congress building for the first time. Traveling with a small contingent of his elite soldiers, as well as a man clad in chains, a hood over his head.
Upon entering the main legislative hall, a herald tried and failed three times to announce the entry of the First General; he simply could not be heard above the cacophony of noise produced by the arguing delegates. Unimpressed by the spectacle in front of him, the Vera ordered the majority of his contingent of troops into the hall. The sight of armed and armoured soldiers taking up strategic positions around the room achieved what the herald could not, and the hall went silent. The following is an excerpt of First General Hadrian Aventis Vera’s speech to the combined United Congress of delegates:
    ”Honoured delegates; my friends. I come to you today with a heavy heart, for it appears that having just left the brutal spectre of war behind us, not even a year ago, we stand at the precipice yet again. A great nation once more threatens to crumble, to topple into the sea of lawlessness and despair that have ruled us all for nearly a decade. Look outside honoured delegates, our glorious capital is burning around us, its populace divided and its police force overwhelmed; all while you continue to sit here and argue. Even as I speak these words, my fearless soldiers are preparing to assault the city, to drive out the anarchists and religious fanatics who have derailed this political process. Yet I shall not act without a mandate from this body!”
Once First General Vera’s had concluded, the chamber once more broke out into arguments as the two main political factions attempted to assign blame to the other regading the break-down of law and order in the Capital. Furthermore, some delegates, eying the soldiers still positioned around the hall, began to accuse the First General of attempting a coup against the government. After this cry was taken up by a significant number of individuals within the chamber, Vera decided to respond, “You call me traitor, you call me usurper; yet only I have truly had the best interests of this nation at heart, from the moments of its inception to this moment, here and now. As proof of my ability, and dedication to this country, I present to you, the murderer of Syn Illian Mecanus.”
[G.B.Wintus, Imperial Oratory: An In-depth Study and Analysis (Pretoria: Tergnitz National University, 1981), p. 123] At this point the hood was torn off the head of Herentus Bruni, his face revealed to the entire chamber.
Silence is word not commonly associated with the United Congress building; yet after Mr Bruni was revealed to the chamber of delegates, that is all that could be heard. After several minutes, all eyes turned to Jonathan Archer Drake, sitting deep within the left half of the chamber. Slowly, Mr Drake stood up and after turning to absorb the stares of the entire chamber - some hostile, some concerned, some neutral – he walked to the end of his aisle of seats and left the chamber. Within minutes, roughly half of the delegates from his factional bloc followed suit. After the departure of the majority of the Drakeons, a Veranist delegate stood up and proposed that First General Hadrian Aventis Vera be granted Emergency Powers to restore order to the capital and prevent the nation from sliding into civil war – the measure passed unanimously.
The day after being granted Emergency Powers by the United Congress, soldiers from Vera’s army had restored order throughout the city; over three hundred arrests were made in the process. Furthermore, nearly twenty of these arrests were of former member-delegates of the now-disbanded Drakeons, including Jonathan Archer Drake himself, for their connection to the murder case involving Mr Mecanus. In order to decrease the amount of tension within the capital, Vera proceeded to temporarily dismiss the United Congress; promising that the body would reconvene in six months time to finally decide upon the Article of Governance, yet stressing the need for unity and ideological healing in the meantime.
Image
The next six months saw the newly empowered First General consolidate his power, both within the capital and the nation at large. Embarking on a whirlwind tour of the nation, Vera lead a procession of statesmen, soldiers, craftsmen and intellectuals to nearly every town within the Union; while his political allies visited the locations that he could not reach. This tour of the nation was aimed at healing the scars of both the recent civil war as well as the ideological battle in the capital; in both a physical and emotional sense. The First General, alongside various statesmen and intellectuals gave speeches and met with individuals to give them hope about the future of the Union, while also hearing their ideas about what face a future government should have. Simultaneously, the soldiers and craftsmen helped rebuild the physical scars left on towns by the war, or assisted residents in improving their local infrastructure.
After the full six months had come about, the First General was not only popular among nearly all sections of society; he was adored and treated as a national hero in all respects. So when the United Congress, with a range of new delegates to replace those who were arrested or who had resigned, met as per Vera’s original promise, the conclusion to their discussions was self-evident. After a unanimous, if sometimes tense vote; Hadrian Aventis Vera left the United Congress chamber and was engulfed in the triumphant roar of the more than ten-thousand strong crowd that had gathered around the building. The First General and the Confederate Union were no more; in its place stood an Emperor and an Imperial Dominion.
Chapter Five
Phoenix Rising – An Empire Is Born
(1722-1865)
~~~

The coronation of Emperor Hadrian Aventis Vera on the 1st of January, 1722 which marked the beginning of our glorious Dominion took place amongst very modest surroundings. The new Imperial capital of Pretoria at the end of the Altic Chanel was demonstrative of the momentous growth that the Dominion had experienced since the end of the civil war; filled with half-completed buildings and wooden shacks. While the ceremony itself was not attended by any significant foreign dignitaries aside from the Imerian delegation led by the then current monarch; His Royal Highness Angnus rex Stjärnkrone III, was more than compensated for by the vast numbers of loyal citizens from across the Dominion who journeyed to the capital to bear witness to the ceremony.

Fighting against the seductive whispers of a life of leisure after a hard-won peace, Emperor Hadrian wasted no time in delving into the matters of domestic governance and statesmanship. In March of 1722, he officially proclaimed that slavery, an already rare practice in the Dominion, would be completely dismantled and made illegal by the end of the year. Furthermore, he worked towards the reintegration of the southern island states back into the Dominion proper; transitioning from martial to civil law in many smaller towns. Arguably, the largest political decision made in the Emperor’s first year however, was the Gregorian Decree; named after the Emperor’s first Chancellor, Gregor Sebastian Thor. The Decree stated that all of the members, properties and institutions belonging to the Scandinavian Catholic Church, now a shadow of its former self, across the Dominion, would be brought under Imperial supervision and scrutiny. Rechristened the United Church Militant of Tergnitz, the new church was made the Dominion’s second branch of government and official state religion. Yet with the memories of the recent civil war clear in his mind, Emperor Hadrian established extensive freedom of religion laws and transferred all Church land to the Imperial Throne; claiming in the process that “the State shall nowe and foreuer ensvre that the Chvrch does not uentvre into excesse.”
[L.K. Anderson, Our Founding Father: Hadrian Aventis Vera (Pretoria: Tergnitz National University, 1942), p. 378]

This period of peace was not without its sacrifices however, as the Battle of Sedella, a small frontier town in the Dominion’s west proved. The population of Sedella, a meagre six hundred inhabitants, many of whom had fled the southern islands during the civil war; opted to secede from the Dominion in September of 1722. Once the Imperial government heard of the move, it sent a contingent of troops to suppress the rebellion and restore the town and surrounding area to Imperial control. The ensuing battle in the town centre left hundreds on both sides wounded and dozens dead; yet Imperial forces prevailed. This single battle however was demonstrative of the range of rebellions, secessionist movements and popular riots that would pop up with decreasingly regularity over the next ten years. As a result of these events, Emperor Hadrian opted to continue the State of Emergency declared by the Confederate Union during the civil war; a move which meant that the civil and political freedoms of the Dominion’s citizens were significantly curbed.

Two years after his victory in the Civil War, Emperor Hadrian decided to discharge half of the Dominion’s standing army indefinitely; a move which prompted some quiet, but intense criticism from within the conservative echelons of the Imperial High Command. Rather than seeking to integrate these veteran soldiers, officers and their families back into Dominion society; Emperor Hadrian sought to use them to create a loyal bulwark of Imperial supporters in the Dominion’s new and often lawless inland frontier towns. This move signaled the start of what many contemporary historians term the ‘Great Inland Expansion’; the first government supported and sanctioned expansion into the continents interior in Tergnitz’s history. Up until this point, Tergnitzian expansion on the mainland had been completely due to the actions of independent explorers and settlers. It is at this point that I once again turn to the words of noted Revisionist historian, J.P Sherman:

    ”Claiming a religious, racial and national mandate to expand to “all four corners” of the North-Eastern continent in the name of Crown, Civilization and God; Emperor Hadrian Aventis Vera firmly laid the foundations of Tergnitzian Exceptionalism. The ‘Great Inland Expedition’ would be the first government-organized exploration and settlement program in the history of Tergnitz; but this grand boast downplays the range of significant problems that Emperor Hadrian and his successors would face.”

Converting an entire ballroom in the partially completed Imperial Palace into a grand map-room, Emperor Hadrian set out a sequential series of steps that later Emperors would then also add to; pertaining to the exact nature of the Dominion’s inland expansion. Hadrian created the concept of the ‘expansion sphere’, which is a tract of territory that has been claimed by the Dominion; but has not formally been established as a State.

Geography

General Geographic Overview

The nation of Tergnitz is home to a very wide range of different climates, terrains and lifestyles. With a total land area of 36,915,788 km squared, and a total area including maritime claims of 37,414,151.14 km squared, Tergnitz is one of the geographically largest nations in the region of Judea. In regards to how land is used within the Dominion, approximately 22.06% of Tergnitz’s total landmass is classified as being arable, 9.12% is considered to be under permanent cultivation, while a final 68.82% of the land is classified as ‘Other.’ In terms of maritime claims, the Dominion has a direct claim to fourteen nautical miles from the shore, in addition to a claim to an Exclusive Economic Zone of one-hundred and fifty nautical miles.

The Tergnitzian climate ranges from tropical jungles and pristine beaches in the Southern Islands, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 34°C. The central Andras Mountain Range and the sub-arctic Northern Region are both rather cold compared to the rest of the nation due to its high elevation and strong prevailing winds, with temperatures ranging from -22°C to 15°C. The nation’s lowest point is Death Gully in the Eastern Region, at three-hundred fifty meters below sea level. The highest point by comparison is Mount Halford in the Andras Mountain Range, at six-thousand, one-hundred and ninety-eight meters above sea level.

Tergnitz has a wide natural resource base including major deposits of oil, natural gas, coal, copper, lead, molybdenum, phosphates, manganese, uranium, bauxite, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, silver, tungsten, zinc, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, platinum, potash and vanadium. In terms of contemporary environmental issues facing the Dominion, widespread urbanization over several centuries, in combination with intense pollution, deforestation, strip mining and the Dominion’s fairly lax laws regarding environmental protection, has led to a situation where Tergnitz’s natural environment is suffering significantly due to human activity.

Northern Region

    Image
    Known by many of the Dominion's citizens as the 'Wild North,' the association between the region above the Andras Mountain Range and lawlessness stems from the days of the Great Inland Expedition in the early 19th century when only one out of four settler processions is estimated to have survived the harsh mountain crossing. This large degree of separation from the rest of Tergnitzian society in addition to the ruthlessness nature of the terrain and unkempt wilderness of the North bred a determined, survival-oriented culture among the surviving settlers. This survival-oriented mindset has also produced a fierce independence streak among citizens of the North which endures to this day despite the establishment of many land and air links between the nation to the south of the mountains and the north.

    Tergnitz’s north is characterized by its tundra like terrain with vast swathes of pine forests, several large, land-locked glaciers and huge lakes filled with mountain runoff in the Summer months. The ecosystem of the Northern region is the most stable in the entire Dominion due to the fact that it is physically separated from the rest of the Dominion, stopping or slowing the penetration of foreign-introduced species. The yearly average temperature is eleven degrees Celsius, with both above-Judean average yearly rainfall and snow.

    In terms of natural predators, the Dominion’s north boasts several large animals which pose a potential threat to humans. The Granta Grey, Brown and Black Bears, all discovered by the same explorer, Alexander Granta are listed above in ascending order of size and degree of threat posed to humans. Furthermore, the Silver-Backed Mountain Lion and Nutil Wolf are both apex predators detested by northern farmers.

    The largest natural issues in the Northern region are the semi-frequent occurrence of flash floods in summer due to the increased level of thaw in the Andras Mountains and glaciers. Additionally, avalanches in winter and mudslides in summer are an ever-present threat to northern citizens. To combat this hazard, the Imperial Ministry of Infrastructure in 2008 pledged to spend twenty billion Imperial Dollars over ten years, sub-contracting out the construction, improvement and maintenance of existing retention walls to a private firm.

    The largest city in the Northern region is the regional capital of Sutrium. A location of note in the Northern region is the Dominion Military’s Sidar Testing Range.

Andras Mountain Range

    The Dominion’s ‘Great Spine’ or ‘Rocky Bakcbone,’ the Andras Mountain Range has always held a particularly symbolic place in Tergnitz’s history and societal consciousness. For much of the Dominion’s history, it was simply assumed that due to its long distance, the mountain range continued pro infinitio, spanning the entire continent. There were even several theological theorists who strongly considered the reality that Heaven could lie beyond the snow-tipped caps of the mountain range.

    While there were several attempted by the Imperial Government to cross the range during the 18th century, these expeditions were either forced to turn back after encountering bad weather, while some were simply lost. The fate of these expeditions discouraged all further attempts at crossing the range until the Great Inland Expedition of the early 19th century. The rapidly declining amount of empty land within the Dominion’s Western heartland convinced many citizens to attempt to find new lands beyond the known Dominion. While a majority of these settlers went East, a minority went North, charting the first paths through the range before emerging on the other side. Though most of these settlers continued on to the area north of the mountains, a dedicated group decided to stay and maintain the northern passage from the Dominion proper to the new settlements beyond. The city of Vectis, a series of small buildings hacked in the side of several mountains, grew into a significant trading post, as it was right in the centre of the Long Grey Road, the only land path at the time linking the two halves of the Dominion.

    Image
    The Andras Mountain Range is characterized by its seemingly never-ending series of jagged, snow-covered mountains. Scientifically, the Andras are considered Fold Mountains, as they were formed after the collision of two subterranean tectonic plates millions of years ago, causing folding of the Earth's crust. At the lower levels, the terrain is tundra-like, with vast swathes of pine forests, several large, land-locked glaciers and huge lakes filled with mountain runoff in the Summer months. The mountain range enjoys a stable, if miniscule ecosystem, with few plants or animals able to survive the year-round cold temperatures which average out at negative twenty-two Celsius. Nights can last for weeks when the sun barely rises during some months in the winter, and the temperature can drop to negative sixty-one Celsius. During the summer the sun shines almost 24 hours a day, with temperatures reaching up to ten degrees Celsius. Harsh winds also batter the Range almost on a continuous basis, with maximum recorded winds blowing at 102 km/ hr.

    Mount Halford, referred to by the faithful as ‘God’s Spear’ due to a popular tale which began circulation sometime during early 20th century. The tale recounts the journey of a devout and wealthy Christian, who was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Upon being informed of his condition, the man faints and has a vision in which Christ comes to him to tell him to, “touch the heavens.” The remainder of the tale simply documents the man’s journey from his palatial estate to the peak of Mount Halford, the highest point in the Dominion. Some versions of the tale state that the upon reaching the summit, the man was cured and returned to his family, others state that he died during the journey or upon reaching the summit and that only his personal journal survived. It is also theorized by some that the White Halo, ‘Niveus Sanctus Sero,’ a yellow flower found only at some of the highest peaks along the range, was named in honour of the nameless man’s journey.

    Infomration of interest regarding the Mountain Range is that a significant amount of the Dominion’s hydroelectric power stations are located at the base of the range, in prime position to utilize the summer mountain runoff. Furthermore, there are a host of scattered ski resorts on the northern side of the mountains, away from the black-stained snow of the southern side. Finally, the range is also home to a assortment of defence bases, helped to paint the symbolic picture of the hard, rock ribs of the Andras range protecting the vulnerable heart of the Dominion to the south.

Eastern Region

Image
    Commonly referred to as the ‘Dominion’s Breadbasket.’ The Eastern region of Tergnitz is characterized by great undulating, grassy plains with a very diverse, if stable ecosystem. A combination of factors, from the excellent weather which sits at a yearly average of twenty-two degrees Celsius, to the above-Judean average yearly rainfall and the lack of any natural predatory animals allowed the region’s early colonists to establish large ranches and farmsteads with ease.

    As of the last Agricultural Review by the Imperial Ministry of Commerce in 2009, approximately fifty-eight percent of the Dominion’s agricultural foodstuffs, and seventy-four percent of the beef in particular consumed by the Dominion is produced in the Eastern region. Furthermore, roughly twenty percent of the area has been irrigated. In addition to the region's vast agricultural resources, there are also significant natural gas and crude oil deposits in the Eastern region's north.

    The largest natural issues in the Eastern region are the semi-frequent occurrence of flash floods down some of the smaller ravines carved out bedrock over millions of years, in addition to the ferocious thunderstorms and rare tornados which form as a result of the cold, moist air off the Andras Mountains meeting the arid air coming off the plains. On January 2nd, 2011, a tornado tore through the small town of Davaluss in Tergnitz's East killing eleven people and causing eight billion Imperial Dollars worth of damage to government and private property.

    The Military Administrative District of Varl, as well as the Tergnitzian-Solmian De-Militarized Zone is located within the Eastern region. While this area shares many of the geographic traits with the Eastern region, there is a higher degree of rocky outcrops and ravines than in the rest of the region.

Western Region

    The heart of nation’s cultural, political and economic life, the Dominion’s Western region expanded outwards from the nation’s capital of Pretoria, a mega-city of nearly one hundred million souls. The area is densely populated and has seen extensive urbanization as a result, with very few areas remaining unpaved or utilized in the modern era.

    Despite the fact that Tergnitz’s southern island chain was the first part of the country to be colonized and extensively settled, it is the Western region that has become the beating heart of the Dominion. This is due to the fact that, after his defeat of the Theocratic Christian City-State of Tergnitz, Emperor Hadrian Aventis Vera wanted to construct a new capital in the Dominion’s interior, to reflect the new path the nation was taking. As a consequence of this decision, the vast majority of the Dominion’s infrastructure and industry, was build around the new capital territory.

    Image
    Centuries of human settlement, intense pollution and extreme urbanization has nearly destroyed the ecosystem within the Western region. Aside from several hardy bird, pest and insect species, the region is devoid of any non-human life outside of specially designed zoos. Furthermore, decades of pollution have disrupted the region’s weather patterns, creating a thick bank of smog, dust and ash which permanently cover the region, obscuring an estimated 30% of its daily sunlight. This reduction in daily sunlight means that on average, temperatures in the Western region hover around five to fifteen degrees Celsius year-round. In addition to this unnatural smog-cloud, the people who live in the Western region have to contend with weekly acid rains, and must also wear specially designed rebreather masks outside.Strong prevailing winds from the south-east and the wide Andras Mountain Range to the north prevent this persistent smog cloud from damaging the remainder of the Dominion; however a considerable amount of pollution is carried by these winds over the borders of Minnysota and Altimaea.

    Comprised of seven different states, approximately seventy-three percent of the Dominion’s total population lives in the Western region. The largest city is the Imperial Capital of Pretoria, and a location of note is the Unix Imperial Intergalactic Spaceport [UIIS], located just outside the capital. Another location of note is the Imperial Palace in the centre of Pretoria and the Srantis Dominion Military Academy.

Southern Islands

    The Dominion’s Southern Islands are steeped in cultural significance, with a rich historical background. Initially discovered by New Azuran explorer Indri Corvin in1562 A.D, and named the Recastian Islands. Corvin’s expedition was fairly brief and failed to discover the large landmass beyond the set of islands, and as consequence of this, his report to the New Azuran government subsequently stated that the islands were a low priority for colonization efforts.

    Over the next century, the existence of the ‘Recastian Islands’ was largely forgotten by the wider world, with the only human inhabitants of the islands being several small tribes. The tribesmen, who are estimated to have numbered nearly ten thousand at their peak lived largely independent of each other, focusing on subsistence farming, hunting and fishing. This status quo was radically changed after the arrival of the first white, Christian settlers from New Azura in 1626 A.D. This strong sense of historical significance, which is not only evident in ancient chronicles but is visible on a daily basis to residents, has natured an elitist streak among a majority of the Southern Islands residents. This fact is reinforced by a small sense of lingering resentment from being defeated in the Tergnitzian Civil war centuries ago, as well as the fact that many of the Islands wealthiest residents come from Old World families of some prestige.

    The Southern Islands, while urbanized to a degree, still retains a fairly stable and vibrant ecosystem, characterized by pristine white-sand beaches and dense tropical rainforests in the southern-most islands. This dense flora slowly gives way to vast, grassy plains punctured by a host of tropical savannah trees in the northern-most islands and on the southern tip of the mainland. The yearly average temperature is twenty-seven degrees Celsius, with above-Judean average yearly rainfall.

    In terms of significant fauna, the Southern Island chain boasts the largest number of

    discovered insect, bird and reptile species in the entire Dominion. Of particular note is the Fras beetle, which before its death, births its children in the sap of the Kyak flower. After three weeks, the small egg-pods hatch and hundreds of Wjin butterflies fly out the Kyak’s narrow flower stem. Another species of note is the Red, Grey and Euractis species of Gazella that dwell in the tropical savannah north of the islands. Finally, the ocean surrounding the Southern Islands is home to an estimated nineteen thousand different fish species, with the most dangerous being the Sabre Great Shark.

    The largest natural issues currently facing the Southern Islands are a combination of both natural and man-made threats. On the natural side, mudslides have always been a constant danger in the south due to the high amount of yearly rain; this problem has been made worse by the extensive deforestation and urbanization campaign carried out by the Dominion’s inhabitants over the past several centuries. Furthermore, the south is at risk of being hit by hurricanes. Though this has only happened seven times since the days of first settlement, 387 years ago, the threat still exists. The last hurricane to hit the Southern Islands was a Category 3 storm in 1967. In terms of environmental problems induced by man, the introduction of a host of foreign species to the native island ecosystems after colonization has resulted in a situation where native species have to fight increasingly hard for scare land.

    The largest city in the Southern Islands is the former national and now regional capital of Totetum. Locations of note include the Veran Memorial Cemetery, the final resting place for the nation's heroes that is located near the site of the Battle of Edern; as well as the enormous Norton Harbor shipworks. A piece of information of interest is that the economy of the Southern Islands revolves around the Tourism sector, which employees an estimated thirty percent of the available workforce, both directly and indirectly. Wealthy citizens from across the entire Dominion travel to the islands to vacation in tropical resorts, sample the pristine environment and visit the region’s many natural coral reefs.

Economy

Tergnitz has a well developed free-market economy, were the government plays a very minimalistic role in influencing the economy; preferring to let the market chose what is best and most efficient for the nation. This policy has resulted in the privatization of the majority of the governments former functions, ranging from education to healthcare. This has a led to the creation of a national economy were the average Tergnitzian enjoys a fairly high standard of living, with the wealthiest 10% enjoying a much better standard however.

Government and Political System

Image

Preliminary Introduction:

Suffrage:
21 years of age; universal
Citizens lose their right to suffrage on being committed to jail for any length of time.

Constitution:
Ratified by His Imperial Majesty on the 23rd of July, 1964

Executive Branch:

The Dominion's Executive Branch of Government is arguably the largest and most powerful of three branches. It is headed by His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor of Tergnitz.

Legislative Branch:
The Legislative branch of the Dominion consists of one parliamentary body, The Imperial Senate. Within the Senate, there are 301 seats, with 1 member elected from each voting district by popular vote to serve a five-year term; there are no term limits.

Elections: Senate - last held 5th of June 2009, with the next to be held on the 6th of June 2014.

Election results: Imperial Senate - seats by party – The Nationalist Alliance of Tergnitz 155, Social Libertarian Party 72, Monarchist Party 41, Free Capitalist 21, Democratic Reform Front 8, Independents 4

Political Parties

Nationalist Alliance of Tergnitz (NAT)
Image
    A party formed on the 25th of July, 1964, after the passing of the national referendum that led to the creation of a Constitution as well as the Imperial Senate. It is currently the largest Party in the Imperial Senate, commanding 155 out of the 301 seats. The founder of the Alliance, the man who brought together twelve minor, nationalist parties with similar political ideologies was His Eminence, Duke of Regarl, Knight of Tergnitz, James Regarl. The current leader of the party and Primoris Civis (First Citizen) of Tergnitz is Hintar Yass. The NAT favours centralised government, but is content with the current role of the Senate in regards to the lawmaking and administrative processes of the Government. Domestically, their policies are socially conservative and they also attempt to balance a strong economy, with an emphasis on privatization, combined with a limited form of government assistance to those less well-off, particularly in the area of education. In regards to foreign policy, the party favours a very interventionist stance, backing the Emperor’s imperialistic ambitions. Being made up of twelve smaller parties has prompted the creation of several strong factions within the NAT, ranging from an extreme, almost fascist faction, to a very politically and economically centrist faction. This has allowed the NAT to maintain their position of broad-popular support among the citizens of Tergnitz. Yet, it also means that in regards to most important decisions, the party is heavily divided internally, with a decision only emerging if one faction gains the upper hand or if the Emperor speaks on the issue.

Monarchist Party (MP)
Image
    Another party formed after the passing of the 1964 national referendum. It was formed on the 26th of July 1964, by a former head of the Imperial Household, Knight-Captain Ernus Lars. The party currently commands 41 out of the 301 seats in the Imperial Senate and is led by Ernus's son, Knight of Tergnitz, Fredrick Lars. The party’s domestic platform is primarily focused on social and political conservatism, with all party members standing behind the words and deeds of the Emperor. Some of the party's more extreme members want to abolish the Imperial Senate and transform Tergnitz back into an absolute monarchy. Economically, the party is mercantilist and favours the government having a larger economic role to off-set the power of large multi-nation corporations. In regards to foreign policy, the party is isolationist, but still advocates having a large military.

Social Libertarian Party (SLP)
Image
    The final and strongest opposition party formed after the referendum was the Social Libertarian Party, founded on the 27th of July, 1964, to provide a clear contrast to the Monarchist and Nationalist Alliance parties. Founded by a former die-hard Communist, turned moderate socialist, Dimitri Ash, the party currently holds 72 out of the 301 seats in the Imperial Senate and is still lead by Mr Ash, now seventy-two years old. Domestically, the SLP has tended to focus on populist policies with a clear left-wing bias. They favour the creation of a larger welfare state, with renewed government support for education, healthcare and social security. They are also very liberal when it comes to social policy, with the party strongly supporting individual rights, in particular the rights of homosexuals. They aim to reduce the role of the Imperial establishment in the running of the nation, but wish to retain the institution as a symbol of their history as well as national unity. Internationally, the SLP maintains a similar position to the Monarchist Party, except the SLP advocates reducing the size of the military to pay for more social programs.

Free Capitalist (FCP)
Image
    A party formed on the 21st of September, 2000. The founder and current leader of the party is Derrick Oles, a very successful businessman and former CEO of Tergnitz United Energy. The party’s membership is negligible as it is so new, but they have been able to secure 21 out of 301 seats in the last election. Their domestic policy is extremely capitalist, with a majority of their Senators favouring lassie-faire capitalism, while vehemently opposing to all forms of social welfare, including public education, public infrastructure and government healthcare. They favour the privatisation of 90% of the current government services, with only the military and the legal system remaining under government control. Socially, the party is heavily in favour of increasingly individual freedoms. They have no foreign policy per say, except for supporting the creation of additional Free-Trade Agreements.

Democratic Reform Front (DRF)
Image
    A party formed on the 19th of December 1973, after the government crackdown on Communist and socialist parties in the 1970’s, with the aim of democratically overthrowing the Imperial establishment. The party's founder was a liberal-arts Professor, John Fal who died in a car accident on the 3rd of October, 1983. The current leader is a former radical activist as well as a former student of Professor Fal’s, Killian Gor. The party’s membership is negligible, but has received recent renewed support as they have adopted a range of positions on emerging environmental issues. They currently hold only 12 seats out of the 301 in the Imperial Senate. In both the economic and social sense, the DRF is the most left-leaning out of all of the major parties. Politically, they wish to utterly eliminate the Imperial establishment and turn Tergnitz into a fully-fledged republic. The party is too small to consider adopting a foreign policy.

Independents
    The Independents within the Imperial Senate are not a political party so much as a loose confederation of non-aligned politicians. These individual Senators represent wildly different views along the political spectrum and hold a host of conflicting political opinions. Throughout the history of the Dominion, the number of Independent senators has changed radically, from comprising over half of the total Senate population after its inception on the 25th of July, 1964; to a sum total of zero Independent Senators after the 2003 elections. Independent Senators are typically from one of the ethnic or national minorities within the Dominion, one prime example of which is Lord Klòsberg, the Imperial Senator for the district of Aukland in the Dominion’s east. Lord Klòsberg is a member of one of Tergnitz’s Imerian Noble Houses which has held the seat of Aukland for the past one-hundred and forty years.

Judicial Branch:

Legal system:
The Constitution establishes city, district and federal courts. It mandates compulsory trials by Jury, as well as civil and criminal sections; however the Judge still holds the final say in both sections. A high court has the power to review any decision and there is a mandatory review of all major criminal and civil convictions by a national court of review.

Rights and Freedoms: The following is a brief outline of the freedoms and rights granted to Imperial citizens under the Dominion's Constitution and legal system;

- Freedom of Speech
- Freedom of Assembly
- Freedom of Religion
- Freedom of the Press
- Freedom of Movement

Biography: Augustus Tiberian Vera (born 21st May 1940) is the ninth Emperor of the Imperial Dominion of Tergnitz. He was born in the Capital city of Pretoria, in St Jovus Hospital, to the fifty-two year old, Emperor Gaius Kadina Veraand thirty-four year old, Empress Miranda Lintor Vera.
As the only son of Emperor Gaius, Augustus knew that he was nearly assured the Imperial Throne upon his father’s death. This knowledge made him arrogant, as he felt that he knew better than his bodyguards and tutors; he was the future Emperor after all. This inspired Gaius to plan to enrol Augustus in the Imperial Military upon his eighteenth birthday as a normal recruit. He hoped this would give provide his son with a radical new perspective on the world and the people who inhabited it. To be Emperor, he had to understand that he is not always right and that not everyone is as privileged as he is, two viewpoints which he had inherited from growing up inside the very sheltered Imperial Palace.

This plan however, never came to fruition, as Emperor Gaius Kadina Vera, died at the age of sixty-seven, from a natural heart attack. Thus, the mantle of Imperial leadership was thrust upon the young, fifteen year old Augustus, who gladly took up the challenge presented to him.

That was fifty-five years ago; Emperor Augustus is no longer a young man, ready to take on the entire world. Age and time have withered his features slightly, but they have not touched his mind. The Emperor can still remember the day of his coronation as Emperor, all those years ago. His reign as Emperor has been marked with periods of great peace and economic prosperity, as well as periods of economic depression and total war. Yet, all of these experiences have helped shape Augustus into the man he is now, the wise, old father, looking out for his children, the citizens of Tergnitz.

    The Imperial Internal Security Directorate, abbreviated IISD, is the chief government agency responsible for the maintenance of peace and the retention of sovereignty within the Dominion’s borders, both in the Fatherland and in the Dominion’s Territories overseas. This aim is accomplished through the IISD’s central roles as an upholder of Imperial Common Law as well as the through its duty as a defender against any and all internal security threats.

    The IISD was established under The Defence of the Dominion Act (1909) as a direct response to the Imperial Defence Ministry bombing of 1908. Before the bombing, the responsibility for matters pertaining to internal security was handled by the Imperial Intelligence and Reconnaissance Agency (IIRA). The direct failure of the IIRA to prevent the bombing convinced then Emperor Nerva to reduce the powers of the IIRA in an attempt to allow the agency to specialize on one specific role. This decision, while ultimately beneficial in the long rung has produced a strong inter-departmental rivalry between the two agencies that exists to this day.

    Image

    The Act defines ‘threats to the general peace and stability of the realm,’ as low-level civil disorder, large scale violence, or even an armed insurgency. Furthermore, threats to internal security may be directed at either the state's citizens, or the organs and infrastructure of the state itself, and may range from petty crime, serious organized crime, political or industrial unrest, or even domestic terrorism. Foreign powers may also act as a threat to internal security, by either committing or sponsoring terrorism or rebellion, without actually declaring war.

    Under this banner of national defence and in the pursuit of their primary task of maintaining internal security, the IISD employs a wide range of undercover and unarmed police, such as detectives and analysts, to a significant gendarmerie force which utilizes military helicopters and armoured vehicles in violent situations.

    The IISD has the capacity to arrest and detain both foreign nationals and Dominion citizens suspected of breaking the law. These powers are entirely separate from the Dominion’s other law enforcement bodies, however the IISD can take possession of any individual currently detained by another branch of the Dominion’s legal system.

    The Imperial Internal Security Directorate is currently led by Lord Marshal Hope.

Sub-Directorates:
     Imperial Border Guard and Customs Division
     Air Transportation Security Division
     Dominion Coast Guard and Maratime Security
     Dominion Explosives and Counterterrorism Division
     The Office of Command, Control, and Interoperability

National Police Bureau [NPB]
Currently led by Director Victor Franks.

Dominion Civil Defence Agency [DCDA]

    The Dominion Civil Defence Agency, abbreviated DCDA, is the Dominion’s primary disaster response coordinator. The chief goal of the DCDA is to work with local and federal authorities, including but not exclusively to the Imperial Internal Security Directorate, Ministry of Defence, Domestic Police Force and National Police Bureau.

    Image
    Created under the Disaster Management Act (1921) by then Emperor Democritus after the devastating Northern Wildfires in July 1920. While initially the role of the DCDA was to provide on-the-ground support of disaster recovery efforts, which is still the agencies’ main aim. The agency has expanded over time to include many other roles which had not been filled by other agencies, these include; the provision of experts in specialized fields, the provision of funds for training of ‘first-responder’ personnel throughout the Dominion and its territories as part of the agency's preparedness effort. The DCDA also provides funding for rebuilding efforts, relief funds for infrastructure and low interest loans for individuals and businesses.

    Aside from disaster-related efforts, with the technological jump into the Atomic Era the duties of the DCDA expanded to include the establishment and maintenance of urban fallout shelters, public education regarding what to do in the case of a nuclear attack and nuclear waste disposal.

    The Dominion Civil Defence Agency is currently led by Lord General Bernard Yeats.

     Disaster Coordination and Facilitation Department

Education

Primary Education:
Education for all citizens is provided free-of-charge by the State from Kindergarten to Grade 6.

Secondary Education:
Upon the completion of the primary education system, there are two options for students wishing to continue their education. They are able to enrol in one of the many privatised secondary schools in the Dominion and her Territories, which provide an elite education for those who are able to afford it.

Alternatively, for individuals unable to afford the costs associated with private schooling, the Imperial Government again provides TAFE courses at a minimal fee for a further four years.

Tertiary Education:
Upon completion of the secondary education system, individuals with marks deemed high enough, are able to begin their tertiary studies at one of the twelve prestigious Universities located within the Dominion.

Foreign Affairs

Image
Imperial Intelligence and Reconnaissance Agency (IIRA):

The Imperial Intelligence and Reconnaissance Agency (IIRA) is the Dominion’s primary security intelligence service. Its main responsibility is collecting, analysing and reporting intelligence on threats to security or the stability of the Dominion. The Defence of the Dominion Act (1909) defines security as the protection of the Dominion’s territorial and border integrity from serious threats, and the protection of Tergnitz and its people from espionage, sabotage, politically motivated violence, the promotion of communal violence, attacks on Tergnitz’s defence system, and acts of foreign interference.

The IIRA does not investigate lawful protest activity or purely criminal activities. It is not a law enforcement body and does not have any powers of arrest; however, they do cooperate closely with law enforcement agencies if there is a criminal link. Investigations generally focus on detecting the intentions and activities of terrorists, people who seek to act violently for political reasons and people who seek to clandestinely obtain sensitive Tergnitzian information. Most of the Agencies resources are aimed at detecting and removing security threats, countering espionage and foreign interference against the Dominion.

The IIRA is also responsible for the collection of foreign intelligence in the Dominion, at the request of His Imperial Majesty, the Minister for Foreign Affairs or the Minister for Defence.

The IIRA is currently led by Lord Admiral Keith Anderson.

Defence Signals Department (DSD):
A sub-division of the IIRA, the DSD is tasked with supporting decision-makers within the Imperial Government and the Dominion Military, by providing them with high-quality foreign signals intelligence products and services. DSD makes government and Defence policy more certain and more effective by providing the policy departments and assessment agencies with important information that is not available from open sources. DSD also directly contributes to the military effectiveness of the Imperial Internal Security Division and the Dominion Military, and provides a range of information security services to ensure that their sensitive electronic information systems are not susceptible to unauthorised access, compromise or disruption.

The task of the DSD is increasingly complex and demanding as the world has become a much more uncertain place. The Imperial Government is now required to make wide-ranging decisions regarding foreign policy, in response to political, national security and economic imperatives, with a speed unprecedented in history. To do so, it needs timely access to the best information available, and intelligence is one of the sources on which it relies.

At the same time, the revolution in information technology has fundamentally changed the world we live in and the way we all do business. Modern communications technologies have ushered in the Information Age and the electronic marketplace. For DSD, for whom information is core business, dealing with the collection and protection of information, the new environment continually challenges us to look for new and better ways to fulfil our obligations to the Imperial Government and the Dominion Military.

Dominion Combat Doctrine:
Following the extensive Henderson Defence Review, conducted from 2001-2009, titled Dawn of a New Century; Imperial High Command elected to adopt a slew of measures recommended in the Review. Dominion military strategy would now revolve around the Tutela Bovis or Charging Bull’ doctrine. The first aspect of which involves the establishment of air and naval supremacy, primarily revolving around the creation of a full air and naval no-go zone around the target area / country.

The second aspect involves a comprehensive air campaign, where all military and civilian targets are attacked by the Dominion’s strategic bomber force. This heavy aerial bombardment serves to destroy the military infrastructure of the target nation, thus making it harder for native opposition forces to coordinate an effective resistance campaign against the coming invasion force.

The third and final aspect involves a full invasion by the Dominion’s ground forces, with a heavy focus on a broad advance on many fronts by mechanized infantry and armoured divisions, supported by attack helicopters and large-scale deployments of airborne troops which serve to disrupt enemy command and supply lines.

United Church Militant
"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth.
I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." - Matt. 10:34

Overview:

    The United Church Militant of Tergnitz is the official state church in Tergnitz, the largest Christian denomination in Tergnitz, and the Mother Church of the worldwide Varist Communion. The church dates its formal establishment principally to the Greogiran Decree; enacted by Emperor Hadrian Aventis Vera in AD 1722.

    The Decree was the result of the Emperor’s victory over the Theocratic Christian City-State of Tergnitz in 1721, and the City-State’s principal backing institution, the Scandinvan Catholic Church. In the Decree, Emperor Hadrian formally dissolved all elements of the Scandinvan Catholic Church within the borders of the Dominion; integrating them into the new state church, the United Church Militant [UCM].

    The main organizational structures and doctrines of the UCM were to be drafted in the decade following the end the civil war. This development revolved around two central and consistent themes; an emphasis on the Church’s subordinate position to the State, and a review and eventual improvement of Catholic doctrine to match the worldview of all imperial citizens. The result of this development has led the UCM to label itself as a ‘Reformed Catholic’ Church.

      Catholic in that it views itself as a part of the universal church of Jesus Christ in unbroken continuity with the early apostolic church. This is expressed in its emphasis on the teachings of the early Church Fathers, as formalised in the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian creeds.
      Reformed in that it has been shaped by a range of doctrinal principles emanating from a distrust of the power and influence of the Church in the post civil-war period.
    Since the Church’s foundation it has used a combination of English and Latin liturgy; with the chief factor in deciding between the two being an individual’s social class. This liturgy has been updated and modernised at various times. The church also adopted congregational singing of hymns and psalms.

    The governing structure of the church is based on the traditional parishes which are gathered into Dioceses presided over by a Bishop. The Arch Lector of Pretoria is the 'Patriarch of All Tergnitz' and a focus of unity for the whole Varist Communion worldwide. The Parochial Church Convocation is the one organ within the Church that could be compared to a secular legislative body; as it comprises bishops, clergy and laity. The Primacy Conclave existing as the Chruch’s supervising body and chief organ for interaction with the upper tiers of the Imperial Government. The Conclave has a maximum of ten members; five of whom can be appointed by the Emperor, while the remainder are appointed by the Patriarch from the Council. As the established church in Tergnitz, the Imperial Chair of the Emperor has the right of final approval over all ecclesiastical measures.

Organizational Structure:

    Article III of the ‘1722 Gregorian Decree Regarding the Role of the United Church Militant of Tergnitz within the Imperial Dominion’, clearly states that:

      This Church of Christ is a congregation of faithful men, in which the untainted Word of God is preached, and where the sacraments are duly administered according to Christ's ordinance in all those things that by necessity are requisite to be same.
    Despite the complexities of the structure, the United Church Militant at its heart, views the local parish church as its basic unit.

    No member of the clergy can be instituted and inducted into a Parish without swearing the Oath of Allegiance to His Majesty, and taking the Oath of Canonical Obedience: "in all things lawful and honest" to the local Bishop. Usually they are instituted to the benefice by the Bishop and then inducted by the Archdeacon into the possession of the benefice property—church and parsonage. Cathedral clergy (normally a dean and a varying number of residentiary canons who constitute the cathedral chapter) are appointed either by the Crown, the Bishop, or by the dean and chapter themselves.

    The church is structured as follows (from the lowest level upwards):

      Chapelry - A Chapelry is a type of Parish that exists in circumstances where the traditional Parish model cannot be readily applied. There are a number of local churches within some Tergnitzian mega-cities that do not have a Parish. In urban areas there are a number of proprietary chapels (mostly built in the 19th century to cope with urbanisation and growth in population). Also in more recent years, some lay organizations that are affiliated with the UCM, yet outside its formal structure, have attempted to spread the Gospel of Christ in fresh and non-traditional ways by establishing small congregations in schools or pubs.

      In addition to these lay organizations and non-Parish local churches, there are other members of the clergy who, from an organizational standpoint, exist on the ‘Chapelry’ level. These include confessors, individual priests who, full of righteous zeal, roam across Dioceses spreading the Gospel. Foreign missionaries and coenobites (domestic monks), are also considered to be on this level.

      Parish - A Parish is a subdivision of a Deanery. Parishes are the most local level of the UCM, often consisting of one church building and community. The parish is looked after by a parish priest who for historical or legal reasons may hold one of the following offices: Vicar, Rector, Preacher or simply, Chapel-Priest. The running of all parishes is the joint responsibility of the incumbent priests and the Parochial Church Convocation [PCC], which consists of the parish clergy and elected representatives from the congregation.

      Deanery - A Deanery is a subdivision of a Diocese. A Deanery is a group of up to three Parishes forming a district within a Diocese. The member parishes are then allowed to each elect up to six lay (non-ordained) representatives to the Deanery Synod; a body which helps to coordinate non-local events and whose members are then allowed to represent their Deanery at the Parochial Church Convocation.

      Parochial Church Convocation - The Parochial Church Convocation is a body that can simultaneously be described as below and above a Diocese in terms of organizational strength. It is a Church Synod, whose members are drawn from a single Diocese. Membership is granted to all clergy who are licensed to preach within the relevant Diocese, as well as elected members of the laity from all Deanery Synods within the relevant Diocese, and the Bishop of the Diocese.

      Parochialism means being provincial, being narrow in scope, or considering only small sections of an issue. Events, groups and decisions within a parish are generally run, formed and decided by locals— sometimes taking little heed of what is going on in the wider Church. As a result of this, a parish can sometimes be excessively focused on the local scale; a situation which can result in group views becoming internalized and separated from mainstream Church doctrine. To prevent such a schism from occurring, the early organization of the Church provided for a link between the upper echelons of the Church and local Parishes. Since this time, the PCC has evolved into what some have loosely called the Church’s ‘legislative arm.’ The PCC can create two types of legislation, measures and canons. Measures have to be approved but cannot be amended by the Primacy Conclave and the Imperial Senate before receiving the Royal Assent and becoming law. Canons require Royal Licence and Royal Assent, but form the law of the Church, rather than the law of the land. Aside from its duties in relation to legislation, the PCC is responsibility for discussing theological matters and ensuring that Church doctrine, as established by the Primate, is disseminated correctly to all Parishes.

      Diocese - A Diocese is a subdivision of a Province. These are areas under the jurisdiction of a Diocesan Bishop, and are centred on a Cathedral. There may be one or more assisting bishops, usually called suffragan bishops, within the diocese who assist the Diocesan Bishop in his ministry. In some very large dioceses a legal measure has been enacted to create ‘episcopal areas’, where the Diocesan Bishop runs one such area himself and appoints ‘area bishops’ to run the other areas as mini-dioceses, legally delegating many of his powers to these area bishops. The Bishops work with the Parochial Church Convocation of elected laity and ordained Clergymen to run the diocese.

      Province - A Province may cover all or part of a country, or a group of countries. A Province is subdivided into a number of Dioceses as per the population of the relevant area. The province is led by a Provincial Council of Archbishops, which is made up of three Archbishops. The formal leader of the Council is given the position of Grand Lector; yet the position changes hands every five years, and the former holder of the position is barred from receiving it until the entire Council has had the position. Archbishops are Bishops who are promoted to that position by the Primacy Council.

      Primacy - A Primacy consists of an entire country, or a group of countries; depending on the number of faithful within a specific nation. The Primacy is led by a Patriarch, a Grand Lector from the Province that has been designed as the ‘Imperial Seat’ by the Sovereign of Tergnitz. In the case of Tergnitz, this would be the Province of Pretoria; which means that the Arch Lector of Pretoria is the 'Patriarch of All Tergnitz' and a focus of unity for the Varist Communion worldwide. In addition to his specific authority in his own Province, the Patriarch has powers that extend over the whole country. Furthermore, the Patriarch is responsible for constructing the Primacy Conclave. This group of Clergy may come from any level of the Church above the rank of Bishop. They serve at the pleasure of the sitting Patriarch and their role is to advise the Patriarch and the Sovereign on theological matters and matters of Church administration. The Council is limited to a total of ten full-time members and their relevant assistants and retinue. Out of this total of ten, five can be appointed by the Emperor at his pleasure, while the other five are appointed by the Patriarch. However, an Emperor has not appointed an individual to the Primacy Conclave since the mid 1800’s.

      Primate - The Tergnitzian Monarch is constitutionally the head of the UCM; a fact which is reflected in his Royal Title: 'His Eminence the High and Most Holy Primate of the United Church Militant of Tergnitz.' The canon law of the United Church Militant states, "We acknowledge that the Emperor’s most excellent Majesty, acting in according to the laws of the realm, is the highest power under God in this Dominion, and has supreme authority over all persons in all cases; in both civil and ecclesiastical realms.” In practice however, this power is often exercised through the Primacy Conclave.

Ten Commandments:

1. I am the Lord your God. You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.
4. Honor your father and your mother.
5. You shall not murder.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.

Church Doctrine:

Abortion

    “We affirm that every human life, created in the divine image, is unique. (Jeremiah 1:5) Thus, we therefore put forward the position that to kill a child before their birth is an act of evil and sin; as children are known to God before their birth. (Galatians 1:15) Yet, to withhold compassion from one who is suffering is also an evil; and in circumstances of extreme distress or need, a very great evil. Thus, as we live in an imperfect world the ‘right‛ choice is sometimes the lesser of two evils. (Ecclesiastes 4:3)” ~ Ninth Provincial Council Assembly on Modern Ethics
Afterlife

    “While those who are pious will be rewarded; those who are tainted will be punished (Matthew 25:46). Though we must not forget that the Holy Scriptures proscribes no exact details regarding one’s reward or punishment. Therefore we must realize that it is not our place to entertain any notion regarding what awaits us beyond this temporal realm. The final judgement of our immortal souls is solely the duty of our Lord and God. Yet, we must also remember that Man is born into Sin; and is thus encouraged to seek absolution in the Scriptures and the teachings of Christ’s Church, from which he should not stray.” ~ Bishop Ritzner on the writings of Patriarch Paul IV anu David ap Erid
Authority and Government

Biblical Interpretation

    “My brothers and sisters, our faith is founded upon a single principle; a rigorous interpretation of the Bible...We know that the only true method to understand and follow the Bible is to rely on Scripture in our daily lives. By our understanding of the Bible do we find strength; the strength that we need to live our lives, to defend the Faith, and to need to save the world.” ~ Patriarch Daniel III anu Gerald ap Erida
Capitalism

    “As is written in the Holy Scriptures, the Lord said, ‘If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.’ (2 Thessalonians 3:10) Thus it is established that every soul is compelled by God to follow a temporal vocation with the same zeal that he directs towards Christ’s Church. Yet; with the monetary reward that is given in due course for diligent work; (Zechariah 11:12) a pious soul does not waste this monetary gain on frivolous objects or events (Proverbs 21:20). Thus it can be concluded that an economic system of principles that emphasizes the role of the individual as a decision-maker and trader in society; meshes with the teachings contained in the Holy Scriptures. (Matthew 25:14-28) For it was said to Adam, and by extension to Man, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth (Genesis 1:26-28).” ~ Twelfth Ecclesiastical Tribunal on Theological Dimensions of Political Discourse
Charity

    “It is the solemn duty of every righteous soul to extend their hand in friendship and assistance to those in need. (Proverbs 31:9) For it is as our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ said, ‘love one another: just as I have loved you’ (John 13:34-35). Let this charity extend to the commercial realm, by which no man should take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy; for honest work is deserved of an honest reward. (Deuteronomy 24:14) Yet, do not simply donate possessions or wealth to those less fortunate than yourselves; as God truly loves those who help themselves. By being unwilling to work, one unduly burdens their fellow man and fails to glorify God (2 Thessalonians 3:10). However always remember that one’s charitable duty begins at home; for the provision of those within the household is to be considered sacrosanct (1 Timothy 5:8).” ~ Lord Spiritual, Arnol Cramner
Communism

    "Members of the faithful should reject the false, utopian vision associated with the ideology known as Communism, as it is based upon an inaccurate view of human nature. The Bible teaches that believers can become new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17) through spiritual conversion, but that does not mean that the effects of sin are completely overcome in this life. The Bible also teaches that we will continue to live in a world tainted by sin. The view of Communists contradicts biblical teaching by proposing a new man in a new society perfected by man’s own efforts. This belief is sacrilegious and delusional, to follow it is to taint one's immortal soul." ~ Bishop Filsha Crant Tervna

Colonial Governance

Ministry of State
Department of Colonial Affairs:
Currently headed by the Vice-Minister for Colonial Affairs, His Eminence, Duke Michael Drake Ross

Occupation Strategy:

In both the Dominion’s Protectorates and Colonial possessions, the Imperial Government has opted to follow a fairly succinct occupation strategy over the past century. This strategy focuses on the construction of dedicated, Tergnitzian military strongpoints within major native population centres. Designed as a fortress in the medieval sense, these kilometre-long compounds are designed to both project Imperial authority and power, while also protecting the Tergnitzian military officials and local administrators.

Established with the primary aim of being near-completely self-sufficient, these compounds typically combine a military installation, airport, embassy, civilian residence, prison and seat of Imperial Governance all rolled into one. To achieve the goal of projecting Imperial authority and power, these compounds are surrounded by high, angular steel walls. These towers of reflective metal are typically covered in an ultra-thin layer of plastic, designed by the Dominion’s military to preserve the pristine appearance of the metal to ensure that the passage of time does not dull the appearance of the outside appearance of the compound. On average these perimeter walls are four stories high and are designed to tower over comparative small nearby native dwellings.

One of most modern examples of this strategy is seen in the nation of Deus with the establishment of Fort Tyrass.

Fashion

    The hyper-capitalist nature of Dominion society has bred a very strong consumer culture among its citizens. However, despite a desire by many of the companies within the Dominion to have fashion trends shift very rapidly, the past ten years has seen trends stagnate.

    The current prevailing clothing style within the Dominion has been dubbed ‘Neo-Renaissance’ by a number of fashion experts. The style, trialled at the Canchi Annual Chic Introduction Show in Pretoria in 2001, became an instant favourite of the members of Tergnitz’s privileged upper classes in attendance.

    Experts at the show encapsulated the style in three key words, elegance, sophistication and flamboyancy. They described it as a style which featured many of the prominent traits commonly seen in Renaissance-era clothing, with a twist to suit the modern consumer. Fashion critic Michael Londer, a junior analyst at the show was the first to predict the large, consumer societal shift away from the brand-focus mindset which was to come about in several months.

    The adoption of this style by the vast majority of Tergnitzian society has seen the development of an interesting social dynamic. The more elaborate and precise one’s outfit is, the higher they are assumed to be in the Dominion’s constantly shifting social structure. Traditional indicators of wealth such as precious stones and gold are designed to be worked into these outfits subtly in an effort to grant the wearer a sense of modesty while simultaneously allowing them to openly display their wealth.

    In accordance with the prevalent themes of elegance, sophistication and flamboyancy, a strict social code in relation to the degree of bare skin that an outfit should reveal has been developed over the past several years. On young women for example, the majority of outfits are designed to reveal the wearer’s bare skin in non-critical areas, such as the shoulders, back and legs, while usually leaving their critical areas, such as the chest, arms and neck, fully clothed.

    The lower one descends in the Dominion’s social hierarchy; the clothing becomes less elaborate and more practical. Yet, even the most basic of clothes within the Dominion retain a level of elegance and complexity. Due to this fact, even the basic outfits worn by citizens in the Fatherland are viewed as very fashionable in the colonies and foreign nations.

Cuisine

    Tergnitzian cuisine largely stems from a rich heritage of culinary influences from a range of immigrant cultures, which have been fused with native ingredients and have been refined over centuries of continued use. Contemporary Tergnitzian cooking makes wide use of olive oil, vegetables and herbs, spices, grains and bread, wine, fish, and various meats including poultry, beef, lamb and pork. Also important are onions, garlic, cheese, tomatoes, lemon, salt and yoghurt.

    The majority of Tergnitzian citizens will have three meals daily, breakfast, lunch and dinner, with lunch being the largest. Tergnitzian cuisine varies across the country, as the cooking of the metropolitan Western region, including Pretoria, Yass and Capena, differs greatly from the far more agricultural East or coastal states to the South.

    The cuisine of the island chain state of Triumni, along with the coastal states of Luthoria and Libera possess a stronger focus on seafood dishes and heavy spices; which is in stark contrast to the Eastern agricultural states of Viard, Strekas and to a lesser extent Voglund, which put a stronger emphasis on large portions of proteins and comparatively bland grain-based dishes.

    The metropolitan Western region which includes the Capital Territory of Pretoria, along with the states of Braxx, Mintona, Stassum, Pastorin, Horger and Tretola all possess a fairly balanced diet, with a wide array of foods available from all parts of the nation; compared to the Northern states of Derx, Jacinta and Niquette, whose historically less developed nature has led to a emphasis being placed on the role of herbs, vegetables and game in meals.

    A number of foods which are simply bought in many other nations, are often made at home in Tergnitz. This is only the case however, with lunch and dinner, with many Tergnitzian citizens opting to have breakfast either on the way to or at work. Some signature dishes served at lunch or dinner however include Ćevapi, Transi and Lupek. The reasons for this ranges from economical to cultural reasons. Food preparation is a strong part of the Tergnitzian family tradition.

    Tergnitzian confectionaries are typically dough-based and are characterized by their dominant use of nuts, chocolate and honey. Some signature dessert dishes include Crasna, Jinoss and Grana (nut rolls).

Roll of Honour

Inscribed here;
Are the names of those that sacrificed everything;
In the defence of a grateful nation;
Their actions demonstrate the fighting spirit;
Burning brightly within every Imperial citizen;
They brought peace and security;
In an unstable and oppressive world;
We will remember them;
Lest we forget

    Victor Theodore Keller (1963 - 2010)
    Rear Admiral, His Imperial Majesty's Navy
    Hero of the Tergnitzian Dominion
    Fell during the Battle of the Halifax Sea
