Describe your national Military

Postby Augarundus » Tue Jun 09, 2009 1:55 pm

Here, describe your nation's military procedures and organization. An example of format is my own. I also found this a good way to announce the recent changes in my own military, but that's a convenient side-point ;)

The Black Army, formerly the White Army (elite guard of the Augarian monarchs), has been significantly modified in the past year.

Originally, this army consisted of massive conscription of 7% of all Augarians (all Augarian 18-25-year-olds, male and female, were drafted) and amounted, until now, to roughly 130,000,000 troops.

However, in the past year, it has joined other nations in creating a more Western army, appropriate due to its significant decrease in territory since the Augarian empire's fall. The conscription is now 1% of the nation's total population, roughly 18.4 million highly trained troops spread amongst the army, navy, and airforce (the navy, however, is primarily from Augarutzen, whilst the other two are mostly Augarian).

The following is a breakdown of troop numbers.

67% Army
12.3 million

25% Navy
4.6 million.

8% Airforce
1,472,000

ARMY:
-1 Black Army- 12.3 million troops each
-6 Legions- 2,050,000 troops each
-5 Battalions- 410,000 troops each
-5 Corps- 820,000 troops each
-40 Divisions- 2,050 troops each
-25 Platoons- 82 troops each
-2 Groups- 41 each
-10 Squadrons- 4 each (note: one squadron has a leading unit, who coordinates the movements of both)

Unique Weapons:

NAVY:
Navy- 4.6 million troops
---
3,220,000 in combat-ready ships, roughly 350,000 may use aircraft on ships, others coordinate strategic movements.
Navy-16,100 Augarian heavy ships (consisting of battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, and the famous and unique Augarian frigates)

Augarian Battleships- large vessels designed to take and deal back fire. Slow yet powerful, these behemoths are long-lasting and technologically advanced, though they are simple in design and function: blocks of iron and steel positioned in front of enemy cannons.

Aircraft carriers- longer and thinner than battleships, with just a tad less protection (all Augarian ships are built to survive). Can hold 30 fighters or bombers and 3 helicopters (only 12 fighters and 1 helicopter may be on deck at a time, meaning the others are in storage).

Cruisers- the fast-hitting cruiser is designed to maneuver around enemy fire and deal huge amounts of damage to strategic positions like engines and barracks. They also take out smaller vessels. They are also referred to and similar in design to dreadnoughts.

Augarian Frigates- a uniquely Augarian ship, the Augarian frigate is similar to colonial wooden frigates in design, but simply modernized. The ship is extremely fast due to it being sleek and thin, and also may, like cruisers, enter shallow water. It is also similar to dreadnoughts in its tendency to use huge artillery to demolish anything in its path, consist of defensive steel plating, and be the fastest ship in the Augarian navy. The frigates are the figurehead of Augarian vessels and, out of the 16 thousand ships in the navy, the infamous Augarian frigate makes up just over half.

Unique Augarian features:
-All ships have decorated gold-plated plows in the front and, oftentimes, sides. This is due to the frigid and often frozen-over waters in Augarundus and the need to plow through them.
-Augarian ships never forgot the colonial age when the Augarian Empire collapsed. Thus, artillery isn't just built above the ship, but also into it (as if cannons were positioned in the sides).
-Augarian ammunition for artillery is meant to cause as much pain as possible; damage is merely a result. As such, exploding missiles (that release toxic chemicals) are often used, as well as liquid and gaseous fire.

AIRFORCE
Roughly 1.5 million troops, 1 million of which use aircraft regularly. Many of the rest are piloting drones, examining weather patterns, contacting pilots, coordinating assaults, or artillery specialists.

Augarian Jets:

-Augtlen Fighter- a small, fast, single-pilot fighter, the Augtlen consists of a small cockpit, two extremely small wings, an obscenely powerful engine, four heavy machine guns, two missile launching systems, a single bomb, and advanced computer technology (that, with the assistance of a pilot, essentially auto-targets anything not in communication or recognized by Augarundus. However, the pilot himself must give the order to fire). It is effective for dogfights, anti-infantry attacks, and fighting against naval vessels. NOT in bombing cities.

-Ugrev Bomber- a mid-sized two-man plane, the Ugrev consists of a pilot operating the ship and two machine guns, as well as a 'gunner' who operates the bombing 'casket', four machine guns, and a missile-launching system. It is almost identical to the Augtlen in its computer functions, though both pilots have different systems (the which contact one another with information about the other's actions, allowing enhanced communication). The bombing system is, unlike the Augtlen's one requiring preparation, an automatic drop of a specified amount of bombs (voice recognition allows pilots to state "four/five/seven/twelve/etc." "insert bomb type", immediately dropping tiny pellets into the targeted area, much like rapid-fire missiles).

-Drones- drones are available for Ugrev and Augtlen fighters, and sometimes used for more dangerous missions.

-Pulyesh Heavy Gunship- a large, well-armored, plane, the Pulyesh consists of a containment chamber that may hold as many as thirty paratroopers, six gunmen operating machine guns, missile launching stations, and two bombing 'caskets', and a pilot. It is the Augarian airforce's figurehead plane, and often has, like the navy, a ceremonial golden plow on the front (like that of naval vessels, it is shaped like a raven's head), but on a lesser scale.

Unique Augarian traits:
-All gunmen are positioned in circular turrets rotatable at 270 degrees (note: they may not rotate into the plane itself).
-Machine guns are fast-firing long range weaponry used to wreak havoc and cause damage, yet not destroy entirely (unless, of course, in the case of fighting against smaller, less armored planes and vessels, or against infantry).
-Missiles can lock on to targets due to the computerized technology systems so long as the target emits some sort of heat. Note: once the target has been locked onto, the missile doesn't generally change targets as a result of heat transfers like some cinema portrays. This is oftentimes due to the the missile's incapability to hit Augarian marked ships and planes (unless specially authorized to do so via the command center's control panel).
-When the 'casket' of a bomber opens up, different ammunition is dropped. Standard bombs cause large, artillery-like explosions. Hydrogen containers are somewhat larger, and Augarian fire is a liquid pitch-like material lit aflame moments before reaching the ground by a casket. Augcivan is the most deadly non-WMD weapon used, as it is a toxic gas used to burn internal organs and exposed flesh. It also suffocates enemies, but that usually isn't as quick in its ability to kill as is the burning effects.

---

This, a much more elite force, has been established due to the necessity for a more powerful army to be used in geographically much smaller areas. Likewise, Augarian tactics have changed.

ORIGINAL AUGARIAN ARMY:
-A brief bombing and artillery run would be made to destroy hard positions.
-Massive, meat-shield infantry would charge and swarm the enemy to death, resulting in more casualties for the Augarians than those they fought against in almost all cases (this would result in a "victory").

Modern Augarian Army:
-Deadly bombing runs made to demoralize and torture the enemy.
-Infantry begin to engage the enemy, holding them in place.
-Armored cavalry and artillery begin blasting enemy hard points apart, then destroy ordinary constructs.
-More bombing.
-The most elite infantry cleanse the remains of those hard points and usually hold positions close to allied lines.
-Said elite infantry split into smaller groups, using terrorist tactics to further demoralize the enemy and take out leaders.
-Public executions of officers behind enemy lines take place (hanging, impaling and immolation are commonplace).
-Threats of total destruction, usually consisting of insults, ominous warnings against specific officers of their upcoming execution, promise that no prisoners will be taken, the Augarian word for 'death' burned onto POW's bodies, etc. are made either by megaphones, dropped pamphlets from bombers, or any other ways of communication.
-Infantry press forward.
-Infantry solidify their position alongside elite troops.
-Bombing runs once again wreak havoc, but for much more extended periods of time. This is coupled with artillery and armored cavalry for total destruction. In a coastal town, naval fleets tend to blast anything and everything apart.
-Repeat until the entire city is leveled (if anything stands, the mission was unsatisfactory).
-A loud claim that all prisoners will now be accepted is made. This, due to its contrast with previous Augarian claims, will beckon many demoralized troops who feel that they may still survive, out to surrender. Under certain circumstances, they may be transported to camps to be worked to death secretly. Otherwise (under normal circumstances), they will be either shot if they make it to an Augarian camp or, normally, gassed in the streets.
-With only a few bullet-ridden enemies left, the Augarian infantry make a final charge into the inner city, killing those who have survived endless artillery strikes.

Note: not all battles follow this procedure, but it is standard, especially when attacking cities. And yes, Augarian troops do attack with this magnitude of destruction: this is due to their tendencies to take each city one at a time (this draws out the experience, a feature of the Augarian psychological warfare), focusing resources on a single major stronghold before moving on to the next, ensuring that there is a path to the city should they need to return and defend it.

Augarian warfare's traits:
-Psychological warfare is key: in demoralizing troops with the thought that they are fighting against almost inhuman Augarians who come from the very depths of hell itself (Augarundus has a reputation for being harsh and inhospitable) they eradicate any momentum the troops had in their advance, stunning them and locking them in position for the second trait.
-Total destruction: to leave no one and nothing alive is an Augarian trait.
-Toxic gasses: they don't require aiming or anything: just release them from bombers and artillery 'caskets' and let them spread throughout the open areas: Augcivan, the most deadly Augarian weapon, is dense enough to cloud the streets as face-level for days.
-Threats and symbolism: impalement and immolation are common Augarian execution forms (all crimes in Augarundus are punished by execution), and threats to torture and/or execute via these methods are also.
-In Augarundus, murder is murder, and death is death. On the battlefield, the same methods are used as in a torture chamber or execution grounds: causing massive pain is Augarian-style warfare.

I may have misread, but you seem to have entirely left out logistics and other non-combat roles, which are the vast majority of any functional army.

My Factbook wrote:Total Armed Forces Size: 5,250,080

Branches:

Soviet Naval Forces: 1,050,000
Soviet Aerospace Defence Forces: 1,500,080
Soviet Marine Corps: 965,000
Soviet Ground Forces: 1,657,000
Soviet Special Operations Forces: 78,000

Approximately half of the Soviet Armed Forces are reserve and logistics personnel. Planetary Defence Forces are an entirely separate unit and are under the command of the planetary governor, as such their training and equipment are his sole and his advisors sole responsibility. The Soviet Military's primary purpose is the defence of the sovereignty of the Techno-Soviet and it's semi-independent colonies.

Special Military Units:

ARI Combat Units: Designed by Lenin-Gravodsky Corporation for the specific need of bolstering the SMC's rapid-strike capability and hunting partisan infantry, these autonomous robotic drones function along the same lines as a fully-equipped infantryman, only superior in every way. ARI Combat Units (ACUs) are essentially mechanized infantry divisions, complete with air and armour support. The Soviet Military as a whole maintains twenty such divisions, six of which are the Marine Corps' responsibility, eight are under Army command, four are the Navy's and the remaining two are designated under Soviet Special Operations Command. (SOVSOCOM) Widely feared by dissenters and rebels, ARI units are usually the last word in ground warfare. One platoon of ARI units can usually take on several companies of human infantry at once and come out on top with few casualties. Like the PDFs, ARI units are not counted in the army census, mainly due to the extreme secrecy revolving around their true numbers and that robots, despite being sentient, have few rights in the Hegemony.

Planetary Defence Forces: Officially their to protect the Soviet colonies against uprising and attack by hostile invaders, in reality they are nothing more than cannon-fodder and meat shields, primarily tasked with suicide missions and 'heroic' charges against the enemy forces to buy time for the real soldiers to arrive. Criminals are widely sentenced to either slave labor mines on remote asteroids, or terms in the PDF. Naturally, the PDFs have extreme casualty rates and are usually the first groups to rebel. They are not included in the armed forces census, but make up about 1.5-3% of their respective colony's population.

No, for naval and airforce details I specifically left out a portion (albeit, not the majority) of the force from the active combat roles to be assigned to various positions in non-combat. In the army, the logistics, management, and medical forces are part of the overall force divided amongst various battalions and whatnot. As for overall management and intelligence, that is independent of the military, but in cooperation.

The Republic follows the "military first policy of self-independence". All citizens are required to serve in the Breotanian National Paramilitia or the Armed Forces in a staggered conscription (each year conscripts an entire age bracket between the ages of 18 and 30), with personnel serving whatever branch requires their service for 1 year, with additional 4 years of service highly encouraged.

Total Military Forces: 6.8 million
National Paramilitary Defence Forces: 2.1 million
National Military Intelligence/Special Operations: .9 million
National Naval Division Forces: .8 million
National Aeronautics Division Forces: .8 million
National Infantry Division Forces: 2.2 million

All military vehicles are supplied by the National Vehicular Design Bureau and manufactured by the National Military-Industrial Complex in their manufactories stationed throughout the nation. NMIC also produces all sidearms and weapons for the forces which are designed by the National Munitions Design Bureau.

Soldiers are primarily taught physical and psychological endurance and weapons handling. Safety is a secondary concern and mostly up to the Generals to plan during battles.

A small subset of the NMISO deals specifically with large-target weaponry. Though any and all of these weaponry are still in experimental stages and their specifics are not subject to public discussion.

Image
Fleet Lord - They are nobles from the upper echelon and veteran officers. They command entire Houses, and may initiate combat if it serves the needs of the Council of the Nine.

Image
Vice Lord - Second in command of the fleets as well as a noble from the upper echelon bloodlines.

Image
General - Most of these veteran officers are from the main house lines and or the royal court. They are more then usually handpicked by the Fleet Lords and or the Council of the Nine, attesting to their abilities.

Image
Sengar d'isto - A noble rank. They also are the head of the Prata Khan's for any one fleet or ground force.

Image
Prata Khan - They are highly trained, professional soldiers from usually honoured houses or direct from the common citizenry. Prata Khan's are in charge of infantry, aerogroups, and so on. Consider them to be the middle rankings similiar to a Captain.

Image
Siet Khan - Second to the Prata's. Seasoned cleric, or soldier that has survived enough battles, and is well versed in leadership to inspire those around them.

Image
Ji - Lower ranked officer class. Usually from the citizenry lines, some of the lower ranked houses as well.

Image
Liet - Lower ranked officer class. Usually from the citizenry lines, some of the lower ranked houses as well. Highest position unless other circumstances permit, that a citizen not of honoured line can achieve.

Image
Kenyet - Meaning " Brave ", the Kenyet is a seasoned non commision officer, and more then likely found as bodyguards and or pilots though infantry are also to be found. They have also recently been spotted as apart of the clerical units.

Image
Yeyinde - Seasoned non commissioned officer. Most of the Yeyinde are in second in command of company's or aerowings.

Image
Setg'in - Seasoned warrior, though not an officer. Has small leadership and just enough attained honour to hold command of a platoon.

Image
Hult'ah - Soldier. Seasoned, seen a few battles, survived. Is proficient in several areas. Akin to a specialist or such in another army.

Image
Aseigan - Your basic grunt. New to the ranks of the Haruspex legions, they are the those who are commanded and look upon the Hult'ah's for guidance.

House Legions as listed below comprise roughly 1,000, 000 troops per House fielded legion and are deployed at the following areas.

(Note this is using 1.5% of total population.)

Olath Orn If the Renor Xukuth are the visible fronts, then the Olath Orn are the lurking shadows under the bed, in the closet and any other dark place one can imagine. They are the SS of The Principality and a component of the Executive Order. The left hand of the Empress. These are beasts, true wolves of the night and the inky black of the fearful day. If the Haru are beasts, then these are the monsters. Everything that is inhumane, condemnable on every level and affront to all things pure, as described in any civilized nations handbook on evil, is done daily by the Olath Orn. They have existed for four hundred years as the guardians of the dark path that is walked by the Empress and they give no insight to what lay on that path exactly.

Tagnik Zun The Tagnik zun are the key to the Empress and Executive Order's power and in turn serve as elite shocktroops in corrospondence with other regular legionary units. Tagnik zun are trained from infancy on the provisional colony Salusa Secundus, unknown to the rest of the world perhaps save Beautancus. Salusa Secundus is home to the vicious training grounds of the Tagnik zun, who fight voraciously in a mock-up of natural selection - ensuring that only the best enter formal Imperial service. Unlike many armies of the free world, the intense difficulties of simply surviving the barren terrain and fellow populace on Salusa Secundus leave only the toughest alive.

Further, their training emphasizes ruthlessness and near-suicidal disregard for personal safety.

All but the top elite in the 4.731 billion people of our glorious continent are indoctrinated with military ideology and military education, as well as the ideologies of our discipline. As a result conscription is a part of life no matter what age it is. At least 50% of the population are on active duty and the 4.731 billion are on reserve.

They show no mercy, except for our allies in which we teach them to protect.

The military consists of 1,400,000 troops, 80% of which are contract based. Service is mandatory for males, and cannot be avoided.43% of the population is designated 'reserve forces', and may be called back at a time of invasion. females are allowed to serve in most roles, but are not required by law. Over a period of 8 months they go under intense training, and depending on the unit will be based around defense or offensive maneuvers. officers receive an extra 3 months of training, as do vehicle crews assigned to high-tech machines [A BTR/BMP/T-72 operator is fully trained and capable after the standard 8 months, where as a T-80/T-90A/T-100 tanker will get extra].

There is a heavy emphasis on squad teamwork, along with completion of the objective over everything else. They are indoctrinated to kill their target without remorse, and are expected to finish off wounded enemy combatants.

The average infantrymen is armed with an AK-74 assault rifle, with 9 magazines of ammunition and a bayonet. He is equipped with body armor if he is going into direct combat, and his helmet varies by unit[could be an Ssh68M or STSh-81 helmet]. other equipment includes a 'Gorka' uniform, 6sh92 chest rig[may be issued an Afghan/1st Chechen war era Lifchik instead, depending on supply], and a pair of leather combat boots. Other then these, they recieve fairly common equipment such as canteens, e-tools, rucksacks and grenades.
