What's the purpose in lying about something if it doesn't benefit me? If I'm trying for popularity there are much better routes to go then lying about a weapon or job. Especially lying about being a PI. Nearly anyone that is LEO or knows anything about the job will tell you it's not that big of a deal. Same for the guns, it's not hard getting the G3 if your records clean and building your own PSG1 is just a matter of time and money.

It'd make more sense on a timeline.

Everything sorta came into existance in the 60s/70s, then went through mass modernization in the early 90s, then went through another mass modernization in the late 2000s before settling in what it is now.

Eh, it wouldn't be a totally baseless criticism. Going through over nine main service rifles (five basic families of rifle) in the course of just under fifty years would be a heck of a burdan on the supply lines. It's justified, in my eyes, by the fact that each rifle solved most of the problems of the previous one but also added new difficulties - imagine if, instead of adopting the M16A2, the US just adopted the AR-18.

Or perhaps the .223 has so little power that the buffer tube must be cut in half in order for the rifle to operate normally?
Or maybe the 5.56 requires rails in order to handle all the baby killing energy?
