Main Military Weapon of Your Country: Part 12

This thread is devoted to the presentation of your nations firearms, and the development, deployment and discussion thereof. Images are welcome, though we ask that excessively large images (to be determined at presentation) be spoiler'd. Discussion of all categories of firearms is permitted, as well as firearms designs and related military discussion.

Please keep in mind: If you post a design here, you automatically accept that it may, nay will, be criticized. You do not have to agree to accept the criticism and act on it but you forfeited the right to whine about it when you posted. Such is the nature of a public forum. Try to learn from what the more experienced players have to say, and use that knowledge to improve your design. As always, to the veterans, this is not an excuse to flame, troll and otherwise be a douchebag.

If you can not keep yourself from responding to every asinine thing they say PUT PEOPLE ON YOUR IGNORE LIST. If you respond with anything other than factual "This is wrong, here is why" posts, you're wrong. End of discussion.

Yes, the majority of the discussion here is rooted in realism, it doesn't have to be. If you see an unrealistic post, and you can't critique it in a constructive way, keep your fingers off the keyboard and don't type a damn thing. The poster will ether go away or continue posting with no response, at which point moderation, ill deal with the spamming. You are not obliged to answer nor does "looking tough' with witty comebacks on the internet do anything for you but increase your e-peen.

Wanna increase your e-peen, go play forumwarz. Don't do it here.

If you DO want to contribute to the discussion, then contribute to the damn discussion. Don't post an idea and then come back with side arguments and semantic bullshit when you're told why you're wrong. Either defend your point with facts or accept it and move on. Also, for the record, being told that you'e wrong, and having that fact backed up by source, is not elitism.

The tank thread, the realism thread, and the fighter thread do not suffer from this idiocy. So, figure it out ladies and gentlemen.

And now, Dr Spree pontificates on the Avtomat Kalashnikova model year 1947 vs the Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy

That said, there are a couple of things that aren't acceptable answers, unless you fit very specific criteria. The most obvious of these is that the 'AK-47' is not an acceptable answer. If you have a problem with that, feel free to talk to me about it. Why isn't that an acceptable answer, though? Spoiler time!

No, seriously, read this:
The AK-47 was designed in 1946 and formally adopted by the Soviet military in 1949. There were four models used between 1947 and 1959: The AK-47 was the test and trials designation for the rifle: the earlier prototypes, made in 1946, were referred to as the AK-1 and AK-2. After the adoption of the rifle, it was designated simply as the "AK". However, due to three variants of the AK being made, it is more proper to refer to these variants as the "AK Type-#" rather than just "AK" as the three variants differed quite significantly from one another. Due to that, the term "AK" has more or less become a catch-all for just about all AK variants, and does not necessarily refer to one specific model. The Type-I, adopted in late 1948, featured an early, stamped receiver, but it was quickly (and I mean quickly) replaced by the Type-II AK in 1949. This featured a milled receiver, a stock boot, and some other small, yet somewhat significant changes. The Type-III is the most common "AK-47," and it is basically just a milled predecessor of the rifle you should be using. What rifle is that?

Enter the AKM.

The AKM is the modernized version of the Type-III assault rifle. It utilizes a stamped receiver, reinforced receiver cover, slanted muzzle brake, vented gas block, and a rear sight leaf showing distances of 100m to 1,000m among other things. In reality, it is only acceptably accurate out to 300m on a good day. The AKM is the most widespread AK variant in the world. Almost every foreign-made AK (Yugoslavian, Hungarian, Polish, etc) variant in the world is based off of the AKM. Why? It's more reliable and just as accurate as the original AKs, not to mention much cheaper to produce. It is the Kalashnikov rifle. They come in a variety of, well, variants, which include models with forward, wooden grips, underfolding MP40-style stocks, side-folding wire stocks, and, of course, fixed, wooden stocks. They fire the 7.62x39mm cartridge. Folding-stocked AKMs are designated as AKMS.

The AKMN is the most useful of the AKMs, however, as it utilizes the famous Russian optics rail on the receiver. This allows the user to attach a variety of slide-on optics that do not lose zero and, sometimes, co-witness or, most usually, sit above the iron sights so one may choose which sighting system to use. If I recommend any "old", AKM variant, it is most usually the AKMN. It is the most multi-purpose AKM variant there is, and that optics rail is wonderful. It can serve as a mount for red dot optics and magnified optics alike (night vision, too!).

Let's say you've advanced beyond the AKM, though, and are looking for some more "modern" AKs. This is where the AK-74 and its variants come into play. The AK-74 was adopted in 1974 and it was Russia's answer to the M16 family. Its 5.45x39mm round is kind of a "me, too!" round as they wished to copy the American 5.56NATO cartridge. However, in their drunken stupor, the Russians managed to make a much more effective round. The 5.45x39mm round is very unstable after coming in contact with any kind of obstruction. This limits its penetration quite a bit, but the tissue damage it inflicts is unparalleled. The AK-74 family really tears up soft targets.

Even more modern still is the AK-100-series of AKs. The AK-101 and AK-102 are 5.56x45mm NATO variants of the AK. They're basically a re-chambered AK-74M. The AK-103 and AK-104 are the new, modern 7.62x39mm variants of the AK. I, in all honesty, believe these are the most superior models of the AK family. Stick to the AK-74M, AK-101, or AK-103 for your full-sized AK rifles (or AK-107, AK-108, or AK-109 if you wish to utilize the BARS anti-recoil dual-piston assembly). For carbines, the AK-102, AK-104, and AK-105 are your answers. Shorter still is the AKS-74u. However, if you're looking for a more modern variant, the AK-12 is still undergoing its testing stages, but there is fair potential it will be adopted for use at some time in the near future. Though I discourage its use due to its lack of true production during 2012, within a few years it will probably be a perfectly acceptable answer: models are supposedly supposed to be imported in 2013 in semi-automatic form to the United States. So, I suppose you could either be a nation from 2012+ or a nation that is using an alternate history in which the AK-12 was adopted earlier. Either way, if you're using weapons from 2012 or onwards, it should be perfectly acceptable, and it is being offered in multiple calibers (5.45x39mm, 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, 12 Gauge, and there is talk of 6.5 Grendel variants).

So, basically, what are you planning on doing with your military? Here's a list of actual "WE USE TEH AK-15 WIHT BULLETGLOCKS" models that are, well, acceptable for the listed roles in the AK family, and I've went ahead and separated them by general effective range.

Now that you've decided which model it is that you're actually going to use, it's time to decide on a caliber and an optic. What's the best caliber? Well, I'll talk in terms of the assault rifles/carbines as the longer-range weapons are really a freedom of choice type of thing. So, we're basically down to 5.45x39mm, 5.56x45mm, and 7.62x39mm. Let's discuss 5.45x39mm first, shall we? Rhetorical question.

5.45x39mm
Okay, so you've chosen the "me, too" cartridge. What can we expect? Well, the 5.45x39mm round is capable of penetrating some armored vests, but not at very long ranges at all. Let's just refer to it as standard ball FMJ, regardless of type, for simplicity here. You can make your own uber-cool loads for it later. Alright, so the 5.45x39mm round is designed with a small air cavity in the front. This makes the round rear-heavy and very unstable. Upon impacting a target, it begins to tumble almost immediately. The flesh wounds caused by this round are devastating. This is probably the most lethal round to choose for an AK if going against unarmed opponents in semi-open ground (see Afghanistan invasion). The 5.45x39mm extends the AK-74's (and derivatives) range from the standard AK's 300m to about 400m. It will get about 2.0MOA accuracy, so that means 8.0MOA at that outer limit of its range: well within the chest. This round is also very light recoiling and, with the proper muzzle brake, is therefore easily controllable. There are a few AK-74 variants utilizing a recoil-countering piston (BARS), but I did not list these variants above as they are, to my understanding, very much so specialist items. Going back to wound capabilities, please note that the 5.45x39mm round is not good for penetrating barriers.
Pros
  • Accurate (2.0MOA)
  • Longer effective range (400m)
  • Very easy to control
  • Devastating on flesh targets
Cons
  • Tumbles upon impact with obstacles (jungle warfare would be less effective)
  • Less barrier penetration

5.56x45mm NATO
Go read a book. No, seriously: there's thousands.

7.62x39mm
7.62x39mm is, in my opinion, the best round for the AK. The original M43 ammunition was lead-core FMJ through-and-through (or steel for AP). It is known for penetrating barriers and packing a good ol' .30-caliber slug in its casing. In 1967, the Yugoslavians created the M67 cartridge of 7.62x39mm. This is now the most widely used 7.62x39mm round. It features a hollowed nose cavity similar to the 5.45x39mm, but it isn't as large compared to the rest of the round. This lets it mushroom out a bit and yaw inside of flesh, but it still retains most of its barrier-penetrating capabilities. It's kind of a middle-ground cartridge, but its effective range is honestly only 300m. The recoil, while not horrible, is not preferable for sustained fully-automatic firing, but in bursts or semi-automatic fire, it should stay relatively on-target.
Pros
  • It's freaking 7.62x39mm
  • Penetrates barriers easier
  • Retains some flesh-destroying qualities
  • Most common AK round -- pretty much every single country in the world has some of it somewhere
  • Good-sized .30-caliber hole, even with no expansion
  • AK-103/AK-104 accuracy of 2.0MOA
Cons
  • More felt recoil
  • More noticeable muzzle climb
  • Pre-AK-100 series, accuracy of ~3.5MOA

Of course, there are some AKs that fire 6.8SPC, 7.62x51mm NATO, 7.92x57mm IS, 7.62x54mmR, et cetera, et cetera, but those are pretty much specialty weapons and, therefore, not truly "main military weapons" unless you are issuing battle rifle equivalents as standard-issue.

As for optics, unless you're wanting to issue a quasi-DMR in each squad (POSP or PSO is highly recommended) or perhaps an ACOG (or similar) on a Beryl/Krebs/TWI Dogleg-style receiver cover rail. As for standard infantry use, however, stick to red-dot optics or other no-magnification optics. These can be had via Russian Kobra, PK-A, PK-AS, 1P63 Obzor, anything else on this site or, if you're feeling Western and pig-doggish, you can utilize a quad-rail/gas tube rail/etc. and put a small red dot (like an AimPoint of some kind: EOTechs would be too tall) on that top rail. If it sits low enough, it should co-witness with the iron sights, giving you a back-up sighting system in the event your red dot optic is damaged/destroyed/dead/otherwise unusable.
So, yeah, you can say you use the AK-47, but unless you fall within that time frame of pre-AK production Russia, then fuck you.

Have a nice day.

What is hydrostaric shock?
Puzikas wrote:
Puzikas wrote:Please forgive the period of time it takes me to write this.

Hydrostatic shock is the principal that a projectile (read: bullet) of a very high rate of velocity and a smaller size is more terminal on a soft target than those of the slow and heavy variety. The good 9mm vs. .45ACP debate.

I will not say if I believe it or not; and I will not say you should all immediately change to one or the other. I will let my facts dictate your minds.

In Fluid Dynamics, Shock is defined as "Referring to an abrupt discontinuity in the flow field". Lost? Stay with me. It is caused by the coalescing of sound and pressure waves in the medium.
Still with me? Good.

Now, Hydrostatic shock is based upon the observation that a penetrating projectile is able to produce unforeseen wounding effects, causing wounding and incapacitating, in a live target. This is due to an effect in our liquid filled tissues, as we are, mostly, water. There is evidence that suggests hemorrhaging effects are possible, if not a common occurrence. Neurological effects can be found as well. This wounding effect is due to a pressure wave that moves though our bodies, displacing and damaging organs and soft tissue, as well as blood vessels. These findings were first reported and affirmed in the late 1940s following studies from the second world war.

If the effect exists, typically wounds away from the wound channel would be present with these fast moving, light projectile struck s live target. Sure enough, they do. A study of 30 kills in Iraq showed a projectile moving at 2,500FPS+ (760M/s+) did indeed show wounding effects away from the projectiles path.

Im sorry this isn't in depth, but I'm still working.

Edit time.

What does this mean?

This means that a large, slow-moving bullet, while dealing large amount of soft tissue damage, as well as internal damage, may NOT be as effective on a soft target. There are rounds designed to kill by what is called a "yaw", basically the deformation and traveling of said deformed bullet. In a military application, this is moot, as they were deemed unlawful (Yes, laws in war) some time ago. In a lethal area they will kill, just as well as any fat mover, but in a non-lethal? They may not incapacitate/kill as quickly as a fast-moving, small projectile.

Now, that is not to say everyone should dun out and start developing a sniper rifle in 5.56x85 or something. A large round is JUST as effective. Though in terms of a main service rifle,he who carries more ammunition is better off than he who does not. And lets not forget in many cases these smaller, faster rounds do not offer as good as armor penetration as larger, heavier rounds (See: 5.45x39 versus 7.62x39).

And there you are. Standing there. Behind a half meter of brick.
And you know its out there. The conductor sees you. But hes not stopping.
Why isnt he stopping?
Because, comrade.
Much like a rape train, the SVDK has no breaks.
And much like the trains conductor, the marksman has no desire to hit those breaks, even if said breaks were there.

We have developed the crossbow as our main military weapon for our PT incarnation, dated approx. 1250.

When they became obsolete, we introduced the little hand-held cannon in the 14th Century. The idea is that it penetrates armour more effectively than crossbows, and were deemed a sufficient replacement thereof.

The mindset in the Freehold Military Force - Katzen, the main weapon is the individual Legionnaire. A firearm is useless without its operator.

The main firearms by category are:

Main Battle Rifle: Kel-Tec RFB - Katzen series. (7.62 NATO)

The Katzen Series of RFB makes a few changes to the starndard RFB platform: Select-fire (Semi-Burst-Auto) Modified Gas System, longer top scope rail with built-in folding iron sights, an extended low profile tri-rail foreward handguard, helical prong flash suppresor (SEI Vortex), Modular Pistol Grip (to name the major changes).
The Designated Marksman Rifle is a 24" barrel RFB.

What kind of crossbow?

Triggthiuda, my MT alt, uses the SpreeK as it's MMW, with the TTM-11 as the main sidearm. Prior to the introduction of the SpreeK, the Starkhaþ assault rifle was planned to be introduced.

We have several barons that are specifically permitted to maintain armies during peace due to the strategic location of their fiefdoms.

Akin to the British with the longbow, crossbows are our weapons of choice.

The inspiration of developing a cannon small and manoeuvrable enough for one person, or two, to carry and fire is derived from the crossbow.

My service rifle for now. Due to be replaced soonish by the 6.7mm CTA AR10 MWS.

E: Apologies about the marketing language; I made it at first for ASAEA, and it's just the most convenient way of showing what I have :S

Akin to the British with the longbow, crossbows are our weapons of choice.

The inspiration of developing a cannon small and manoeuvrable enough for one person, or two, to carry and fire is derived from the crossbow.

Aha, righto. But at a guess, your baronies' standing armies don't exclusively use crossbows; do you have melee weapons of choice?

The People's Standing Army presently field the Samozniy Arms Assault Rifle Type 1 "Doberman" (SA-AR-1) Battle Rifle in its Mod 3 variant (AV-97M3, Automatic Rifle year 1997 Mod 3). A 7.62mm Samozniy (shortened, de-rimmed 7.62x54mmR) select-fire bullpup battle rifle built with the long-stroke pattern gas mechanism, and a range of barrel lengths for multiple purposes. A 14.5" Carbine for the Carbine SuperShort variant, a 21" Standard Rifle variant and a 30" HBAR support weapon, suitable for use as either a Medium Automatic Rifle (as officially designated), or equally well as a DMR.
Recently, the PSA made the switch to the Mod 3-280 programme, rechambering to .280 Samozniy, a locally produced series based off the .280 British cartridge.
Image
All three 'standard' variants of the SA-AR-1/Mod 3 platform
The magazines are of a 'casket' type, and a typically issued in 36-round 'standard' magazines and 72-round 'support' magazines. Due to the significant size of the 'support' magazine combined with the bullpup layout, work is currently ongoing into both a 'low-capacity' 56-round magazine and also a 72-round snail drum magazine.
The Samozniy Department of Law & Order's Combat Brigade utilises a specialised variant of the AR-1 platform (third weapon from top in main image):
http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/ ... 4tehe7.png
The top rifle is equipped with a 24" precision bull barrel, RIS handguard to mount a stabilising bipod, adapted top cover, modified semi-automatic-only selector switch and a 1.5x-6x zoom scope. The second rifle is intended for the Civilian market. It features the same adapted top cover and semi-automatic-only selector switch as the Police model, but is equipped with only an 18" bull barrel and no provision to mount a bipod, featuring a non-removable non-railed variant of the standard handguard. Its depicted optic is only of 1x-4x zoom magnification. Both rifles are equipped with conventional 20-round magazines.
The fourth weapon down is a 12ga shotgun conversion of the system, by boring out the 25.5" HBAR from the MAR and modifying one of the SR-3's twenty-round magazines to hold five 12ga shotshells. This conversion is actually made to the Mod 3-E export variant (7.62x51mm NATO), as the OA/length dimensions of the shell are identical to that of 7.62x51

PSA forces also utilise the Samozniy Arms Assault Rifle Type 2 "Pitbull" (SA-AR-2) Assault Carbine in its Mod 3 variant (known in service as both the SpV-8M3 [Special-purpose Rifle 1998 Mod 3, sometimes known as SvK for Special-purpose Carbine] and SMA-5.45M2 [Special-purpose small-size assault rifle, calibre 5.45mm, Mod 2]). Chambered for the indigenous 5.45x45mm Samozniy intermediate cartridge, it combines adequate short-medium range lethality against lightly-armoured infantry. The round provides a portmanteau of the reliable feeding and ubiquitous nature of the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge's case with the Russian 5.45x39mm bullet for various ballistic improvements that do not require a jump to a whole new cartridge, as other ballistically high-performing rounds such as the 6.5 Grendel would. The 5.45x45 is capable of feeding directly from 5.56 magazines.
Image
All five 'standard' variants of the SA-AR-2/Mod 3 platform
As shown above are the 10", 12.5" and 14.5" 'Carbine' variant rifles with direct impingement gas operation and standard receivers with shortened handguards - the lower two rifles are a 16" 'Rifle' and an 18" HBAR/Bull Barrel capable of light support work. Both the 16" and 18" barrels use a short-stroke piston with adapted, strengthened receiver bodies.
Additional variants, capable of taking large-rifle cartridges (with an overall length of greater than 60mm but less than 75mm, by Samozniy military standards) and shotshells are also in production:
http://dl.dropbox.com/s/hwxhihkjjm0bqbn ... S-4%29.PNG
Two versions of the 12ga 2.75" shotgun conversion. Like the Doberman's shotgun variation, it is unfortunately limited to 2.75" shotshells by system size. The Shotgun and Large Rifle variants are based off of the strengthened receiver model and feature oversized, non-interchangeable magazine wells and bored-out ejection ports. The Shotshell variants, like those of the Doberman, feature the standard HBAR of the rifle bored out to 12ga.
In Samozniy PSA service, only the 10" Carbine and 18" HBAR variants are used. Spetsnaz forces occasionally utilise the 16" Rifle, but the 12.5", 14.5" DI and 16" short-stroke barrel options are intended primarily for the export market. All three 'Carbine' length barrels can be upgraded to short-stroke operation, requiring specially-shortened gas pistons and being mounted on the strengthened receivers.

Before the recent re-introduction of the Doberman battle rifle, PSA forces used the Samozniy Arms Assault Rifle Type 3 "Rottweiler" (SA-AR-3) Modular Combat Rifle family in the Mod 2 variant. Again adopting the bullpup format and the 5.45x45mm Samozniy cartridge, the weapon was intended to be a part of the "Soldat Budushchego" (Future Soldier) programme as part of a re-branding of the PSA forces. The Mod 2 variant revisits the slim, straight, sleek appearance of the Mod 0 original-issue variant, departing from the over-engineered bulk of the Mod 1.
As with all Samozniy Military Industries rifles, the weapon features a number of variants - an 8" barrel 'PDW' without a handguard, a 12.5" Carbine with handguard, 16" standard rifle and 20" HBAR/Support.
Image
16" and 12.5" variant barrels, with standard and carbine stocks respectively
The 'dual-surface' fore-end was designed to maximise control over the weapon, whether precision shooting at range or automatic fire in CQB. The standard handguard is intended for conventional use - medium-range single or burst firing, while the foregrip/trigger guard module is intended to maximise control with automatic fire, by providing a tight, close grip between the hands, aiming to reduce muzzle climb.

Well, most who can afford proper weapons have those made by private craftsmen, so there's little standardization to be spoken of. Swords, axes, lances, and spears all come into play.

But it's past midnight where I am, so I will resume this tomorrow.

Apart from rifling being at least 200 years older than that, the whole barrel concept wasn't around then.

Are we talking steel or composite prod? How is the crossbow spanned?

This is perfect timing, because I've just compiled a list of the weapons that my nation uses.

The T43 is a Transoxthraxian Assault Rifle that is produced by the privately owned Transoxthraxian National Industries (Ironic Name, huh?), and has been in service with the Transoxthraxian Military ever since it's production in 1993. However, it is an aging and unpopular weapon, with low accuracy and high recoil, as well as the general uncomfortable feel in the hands of the wielder due to it's length. It's currently looking to be replaced, either by a Transoxthraxian Equivalent or a mainstream, international weapon. (Note, the length says 1198mm, it's meant to say 1298mm.)

The T68 is another TNI product, but a more modern and successful one. First produced in 2009, the T68 soon became known as the "Snubnose" due to it's short barrel. Used by the Army and the TSB (Transoxthraxian Special Branch), the T68 is a compact, 9mm buzzsaw-type weapon with a high cyclic rate and a recoil-reducing buffer, and a mad resemblance to the M4 Family. The Suppressed Version (The suppressor is built in) is sold strictly to the Transoxthraxian Government for distribution among the TSB, while the Unsuppressed version is sold internationally by the TNI.

The Cansien Mk.14 ESR is a firearm produced by the age-old Cansien Firearms company. Entering service in 2008, ESR standing for Enhanced Service Rifle, the Mk. 14 is a hybrid Assault/Sniper that is handy to use in mid-to-long range scenarios. Based upon the M4 family, the Mk. 14 employed a recoil-reducing buffer, much like the T68, and fires the custom .354 Cansien Round, which is a trademark of Transoxthraxian Republican Army snipers and TSB Assassins alike. Renowned throughout the Transoxthraxian government and worldwide, the Mk. 14 ESR is possibly the most recognizable weapon of the Transoxthraxian Armed forces.

Next would be the TNI SR12. The SR12 is the Transoxthraxian National Industry's answer to the Mk. 14 ESR, and is essentially an inferior product. Used only by certain branches of the military, the SR12 is mainly available for commercial use, often in private contractors, or mercenaries scattered across the globe. It's chambered in 7.62x54mm, is semi-automatic, and is based off of, like many TNI weapons, the M4 family.

Certain weapons come and go with age, as can be exemplified with the T43. However, one weapon in the Transoxthraxian arsenal that is a timeless classic is the Cansien Trench Weapon. The original firearm was published in 1927 after Queen Felicia I asked for a close-quarters solution for the army. With TNI suffering greatly stock-wise, it only made sense to invest in Cansien. Their answer to the contract was the CTW, or Cansien Trench Weapon. Originally a tube chambered, reverse action pump-action shotgun (You pushed it forward, then back to rechamber.), the CTW quickly evolved from an odd-looking pump-action to one of the most revered weapons in Transoxthraxia. Serving the armed forces faithfully in The Spanish Civil War, World War Two, Korea, all SWAT Operations, countless TSB Operations, and even the most recent conflict following the August 21st Coup, the CTW and it's semi-automatic, box-fed descendants have proven effective, if a little outdated. It bucks like hell, is unwieldy, but, at the end of the day, it gets the job done, and the newer ones are as reliable as the AK series, or so we're told.

I'd like to know if a grenade-firing weapon such as This would be possible. Any help on that?

I know most of them are fairly boring/repetitive, but I did work hard on many of them to provide flavour and whatnot to my nation and it's famous armaments manufacturers, so, if possible, I would love feedback of any kind, so long as you're not unreasonably negative and/or aggressive. Thanks.

Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

R-r-r-retoast!

AMBR Mk4, Vecerian Service Rifle
Weight: 3.90 kg
Length: 815 mm
Barrel length: 565 mm
Width: 75 mm
Height: 190 mm
Cartridge: 7.62x54mm VCR
Action: Gas-operated, rotating bolt
Rate of fire: 720 rounds/min
Muzzle velocity: 800 m/s
Feed system: 20- or 30-round Box Magazine or 50-round Drum Magazine (SPMG variant)
Sights and Attachments: Picatinny rails; Iron Sights
Type: Bullpup BR

History:

The XMBR/AMBR was the next step in the production line of the AM30s. As an alternative to the AM30 assault rifle, FenrisArms started to design a bullpup battle rifle which had to compensate the power needed against today's increased use of better armor materials. Trying to get back to a more simple design, and bigger cartridges, they started designing prototypes using parts of the AM30. Alongside the AMBR, a new Battle Rifle Cartridge, the 7.62x54mm VCR, derived from the Russian 7.62x54R, was created. The XMBR was created to be shorter than the AM30s, but with a longer barrel and some new systems. The integrated bipod idea was dropped to safe weight, as well as the integrated Bayonet/Flashlight mounting system. The first XMBR prototypes also discarded the idea of the AUG-style trigger guard, but later added it again, by making a trigger guard/foregrip attachment (M2) for the lower Picatinny rail system. The XMBR mostly used (and still uses) 20-round magazines, as 30 rounds seemed a bit excessive for the larger cartridges. Regular Vecerian soldiers rarely used suppressive fire anyways (that role was reserved for support gunners), so the smaller capacity wasn’t seen as a problem. The XMBR was also the first gun to use the new CG15 pistol grips.

After several tests (including equipping soldiers during conflicts, extreme stress tests, and other usual Vecerian testing scenarios), the XMBR was finally introduced as the new Vecerian standard rifle, named AMBR Mk4. It has been used in action since the 2. January 2010, Vecerian time.

Rifle Material: Built around an aluminum casting receiver and rail system, with high- quality steel reinforcement inserts. The stock and pistol grip are made from High Impact- resistant SMC- fiber reinforced plastic.

Action: The AMBR is a gas operated, rotating bolt, locked action battle rifle. The gas system of the rifle is located above the barrel. The long stroke piston is rigidly attached to the bolt carrier and the cocking handle is accessible on both right and left side.

Barrel: The barrel is made of cold hammer-forged steel; chrome lined, has a 1:7 rifling twist and features six right- hand grooves. Barrel replacement procedure, takes only few seconds, as long as the soldier has the spare barrel already handy. To remove the barrel, one must take off the magazine, and clear the rifle by operating one of the cocking handles. Then grasp the barrel, push and pull out the front and back lock-pins on the upper rail down to release the barrel, rotate the barrel and pull it out of the rifle. To install a new barrel, simply push the barrel down into the front of the receiver all the way and then rotate it until it locks.

Feeding system: Detachable box magazine- fed. The magazine release button is located in front of the magazine port and is completely ambidextrous.

Ejection System: The ejection system of the AMBR is similar to the one used in the FN F2000. It makes the weapon fully ambidextrous, due to ejecting the spent casing through a second barrel, located above the main barrel, to the right of the gas tube. The ejection port is on the right front of the rifle. Immediately after disengaging from the extractor, a swiveling tray made of polymer (PAN) intercepts the spent casing and holds it while the rocker assembly tilts to lift it above and clears off the feeding path for the next bullet. The casing is then fed into an internal chamber and discarded from the tilting tray by being impacted by a pin on the moving bolt carrier upon its forward return. Only when the ejection tube contains more than seven cases, the first of them ejects forward through the port mentioned above.

Part Disassembling: To disassemble the handguard, push and then pull out the lock-pin on the bottom rail. After that, you slide the rail, which covers a second lock-pin, forward to push and pull out the lock. Press the push-pin on the upper rail down, and then slide the top rail forward. This last action lets you disassemble the rest of the handguard.

To disassemble the firing mechanism, pull out the pin that keeps stock and shoulder pad together, then pull off the shoulder pad. Operate the cocking handle (and let it slide forward again), and finally pull the firing mechanism up and then back and out of the stock.

To separate the upper receiver/handguard from the lower receiver/stock, simply push and pull out the lock-pins on the right and left side of the rifle, where upper and lower receiver meet, and then unscrew them.

Fire selection: Selective fire rifle. The Firing mode selector is identical on both sides and located above the pistol grip, providing the rifle with either a safety mode, a single shot mode or full automatic fire. Fire selection is done by switching the red switch back or forth.
