Cycling in your nation?

Postby Picts » Tue Aug 20, 2013 10:29 pm

Do you consider Cycling a national sport in your nation? Is the sport popular? Do you have a national team that you'd want to compete in international cycling competitions?

... Just want to get an idea of the above, in nations other than my own :D

Hey look, Scots.

Cycling isn't a huge thing in the Empire, admittedly. Primary methods of transportation for most people is walking or horse-riding. There are bicycles around of course, more common than mobiles but less common than other traditional methods (We're very... Medieval).

It isn't a national sport, or even considered a sport and is generally uncommon.

there are no "national sports" in cameroi, nor is cycling considered a sport at all. people powered vehicles, are a form of transportation, not a form of competition.

the popularity of rider powered vehicles is limited by extreme nature of cameroi's terrain. it is generally easier simply to walk, then to pedal a cycle or other people powered vehicle, up and down extreme gradients. for this reason, solar battery powered, extremely minimal form factor rail vehicles, are much more widely favored. people power, such as cycling, does exist however, its just not a major segment of our transportation picture. bikeways are less common then narrow paved walking places with frequent places to stop and rest. the do exist abundantly in relatively urbanized area on relatively flat terrain. its just that these also, are somewhat unusual.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

Yes it is relatively popular and most people own a bike for transport for short trips to the local shops.

Do you have a national team that you'd want to compete in international cycling competitions?
We would be interested in international competitions, but most nations don't like competing against enhanced beings such as ourselves.

Cycling is strictly forbidden in Hiyashinsukongouinko, as it was proven by its scientists that it has a direct environmental strike in the homes of the Hyacinth Macaws, the nation's national animal.

Cycling isn't really much a sport in Asia, rather, more like a type of transportation.
It is very popular, mostly in the countryside.

But it is also popular in cities.

Cycling is a huge thing in the Imperium of Albaie. Many people cycle to work or just for pleasure. Cycling became popular when Emperor George took to cycling round Dubrack's Town during the Second World War to save oil for the war effort soon after he started most nobles took to cycling to keep up with the new fashion and the Emperor soon noticing that cycling would save great amounts of oil to help the troops fighting abroad had oil restricted to long distance governmental business and as such almost everybody started to use bicycles. Albaie does have a cycling team known as Imperial Cycling Team but they have only recently been set up and are yet to participate internationally but at national level their members took three quarters of the gold medals at the Albaie Cycling Championships.

Cycling is extremely popular for a transportation mode across the rural areas.
However, it is not very popular for a transportation mode in the major cities.
Most of our people prefer using four wheeled transportation modes to bicycles.

Our nation has two cycling teams for any sport competitions.
They are known as "The Windriders" and "The Typhoonriders".
Most of their members are the natives from the rural areas.

We promote and encourage cycling, yes, to reduce pollution and keep children fit. We do have a cycling team participating in many major international competitions, as well as the Hellcycle national cycling competition, which has its trademark lush green hill as the selected route for the cyclists. Also, there is a popular tour service called the Speed Demon Helltank Tour, a tour of Helltank's major landmarks by bicycle, completed in a mere five weeks.

Cycling isn't that popular. It's a niche sport.
It terms of bicycles; some people use it as an alternate mode of transport. Those who don't own a car either walk or use public transportation.

Cycling is a quick and convenient way for most Koanians getting to and from work and most Koanian cities have excellent bike paths. Most locals in the major cities tend to use bicycles to get around the city as opposed to using public transport that can be notoriously expensive or unreliable.

Image
Image

Bike rental exists in some major cities such as New Auckland, Cherry City and Peanut Valley and is spreading fast across the country to other major cities.

Urban cycling does vary city-to-city, however. Most cities have designated cycle-lanes although they are routinely ignored by drivers and are often shared with buses, motorcycles and taxis. Some major roads will have split-pavements for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst other times cyclists are expected to ride in the traffic. This can be dangerous if you're not a skilled cyclist and general traffic rules should be adhered to. It's a legal requirement to have reflectors and a bell, and front & rear lights must be used at night. Also many cyclists use standard arm-signals to alert motorists - if you are turning left or right you should raise your left or right arm respectively, and if you wish to stop then you should wave your left arm up and down. Cycling is banned on certain roads - all motorways and many A-roads - a sign will indicate this.

Competitively, Koana Islands have always had good track and road teams despite the fact they haven't won a medal at any Olympic games since Atlanta 1996.

Cars are banned, so bicycles are important, but not quite an organised sport.

The only sports we have in our nation involve someone getting killed. Cycling is regarded as a form of transportation, recreation, and physical conditioning, but not much more.

Cycling is one of the people's most favourite activities, as the Cyrillian Kritarchy of Esternial takes measures to protect its natural beauty, which motivates people to get on their bicycles on a sunny day and enjoy the outdoors.

In terms of professional sports, cycling is also relatively popular, though sports are generally considered a leisurely activity and only a very few actually make a living out of it.

Cycling is quite popular in the towns. For those who work in towns it is often the favored way of transport. In the countryside, however, the roads tend to be much rougher, and the wildlife can in some places make cycling dangerous.

Actually some of the more adventurous expert cyclists consider our rough roads a challenge (here, it's considereed an "extreme sport") and a number of international events have been held here. There is not a national team but some of our cyclists, notably Pinuq (25 year old quarry worker when he's not competing--may turn pro), have won medals in international competition.

It's a sport of importance, but not the most popular sport by any means in the Serbian Empire. That being said there are teams based from within the Serbian Empire including Onyx Marenisko.

Bicycles are not popular in Saurisia at all, considering a lot of Saurisian natives are either too big or too small for cycles, and there are many transportation options better suited for us. So, cycling as a sport is nonexistent here in Saurisia.
