Explain the etymology of your nation's name

How did you decide to come up with the name for your nation?

Mine was a spin-off of my real life name with a "polis" mixed in, the Greek word for city. So how did you create yours?

Federal Republic of Vin is a federal republic. Vin is a large continent in which the Republic resides in.

IC: It's the name of the people who migrated to the isles in the 2^nd to 4^th Centuries.

"The Homelands of Sponn" is a loose translation of the Alternish ə ısk-spəoin ısk i hadʒ-am aodʒʒe, which is literally translated (accounting for the shift from SOV to SVO, of course) as, "It makes place-Spəoin place of person-origin". Spəoin (which transliterated into English becomes "Sponn" or "Spoin") is the name of the island the country is situated upon, after famous explorer İdourd Spəoin, who discovered the island, uninhabited, off of the coast of Eagleland.

Seito: The first imperial house which united the islands.

Tonjin: Nation/land. Also meaning the ways of the land in Seitonese.

[Seperate Vermont]

The name 'Vermont' developed as a combination of the plural French words 'Verts' and 'Monts', meaning 'Green Mountains'.

[Saurisisia]

This name I settled on after the first few attempts at making dinosaur-related names proved unsuccessful, Saur meaning Lizard in Greek and isia I just added to make it sound more nation-y.

Saur is the Saurian word of Lizard and is also the name for the King of the Gods in Saurist scripture. Isia is a variation of an Old Drakonian word for land. Therefore, it means Lizard Land in the two most prominent languages in Saurisia, an intentional name intended to unite the once-divided lands that made up the newly-formed nation at the time.

Saur means Lizard in Greek and isia... we really have no idea what the hell it means. Though it is thought to be Khalkan or something in origin.

[Weitang]

Our nation was given a name after the Weitang Clan - a group of triplet brothers who is also the supreme leader of our nation.
They led the Star Revolution against the People's Liberation Army, emerged victorious, and proclaimed the independence of our nation.
"Wei" means great or mighty, meanwhile "Tang" refers to the Tang Dynasty which ruled China from the 7th century AD to the 10th century AD.

[Xekliv]

IC: "The Empire." Because we're THE empire. Do I need to draw a pretty little picture too?

OOC: I got "Xekliv" from literally bashing my face on my keyboard and swapping out some letters.

[Pavonistade]

ICly, the word "Pavonistade" comes from the ancient Gingiegordan word "pavstadie," meaning "respect." Pavstadie eventually evolved into Pavonistade before pavstadie became defunct.

OOCly, I used a star's name (Delta Pavonis), removed "Delta," and added -tade at the back of Pavonis. This resulted in Pavonistade.

Kolumbiya = Columbia = From Columbus, the famous explorer who "discovered" the Americas.

When settlers first arrived in the area which is now downtown Lyncanestria, there were a great number of native American tribes which lived in the area. Historians credit the name of Lyncanestria to a minor tribe, known to the French colonists as the Aolenquen, who referred to the settlement as "Lan-quan'-nehn-qui'-ah" which was eventually, after the meshing of English and French cultures, pronounced as it is today. The first document known to refer to the settlement as Lyncanestria is dated from 1664, and since the country has kept that spelling and pronunciation. (French: la Lyncanestrie)

IC: The Free World Alliance was made with the wish to have a free, democratic and peaceful nation. We want to make the whole world peaceful, so we named it the Free World Alliance (the nation consists of 40 alliance members).

OOC: The nation is from one of my stories or something, where it's actually named the Free World Ecumenopolis because of my free world ideal...

[Slafstopia]

Slafstopia (slahfs · TOE · pee · yuh) comes from the words Slov and Utopia. Originally, by the Ukrainian settlers, it was named Slov'yanutopiya (SLOV · yan · oo · TOE · pee · yuh). Russian influence from their sellers made it Slav'yantopiya (SLAV · yan · TOE · pee · yuh). When German settlers returned to Europe, the way they pronounced the name resulted into the accepted mistranslation - Slafstopia. However, for the past few decades ((or centuries in the soon-to-be FT version of Slafstopia)), the education system has been teaching a new, Pan-Slafstopian language that people of the Russo, Germa, Ukro and Native dialects would understand equally - Slavyukriy. This language calls the nation by its modern name, Lyapzem (liy · AP · zum).

[Imperium Sidhicum]

Derived from Sanskrit siddham, meaning "perfection", and Latinized. Accurately describes the purpose and essence of Sidh people.

Sidh isn't just an ethnonym, it's an idea - to constantly better and improve oneself for the benefit of one's species, to seek both individual and collective perfection, to constantly evolve. Sidh people have taken this idea to a literal level, physically enhancing themselves with genetic and cyber-augmentations in their quest to perfect themselves.

Vandelstein derives its name from our founder, King Vandelstein.
